No, it didn't, but it did, so what now?
Post mortems are useful when trying to avoid repeating mistakes, but what now?
In my profession we model things. I'll briefly describe
three four alternative models. For each model, what paths forward are available here and now, and in the future? What is the
best path forward while we all watch reruns of the 2010 Orange and 2015 Rose Bowls? What does Stanford want to be? What is your model? Figuring out what you are and what you want to be is a better plan than treating the Big 10 like you treated Melissa Witkowski when you noticed her new assets the first day of ninth grade after ignoring her many invitations for just a simple discussion you weren't yet ready for the prior two years. (Stammering and supplicant. Not a good look.)
Model 1. Stanford
Top overall athletic program
Success across the board is arguably (but not arguably) fueled by participation in Big Time Football (We need the dues, man!)
Often nationally relevant in football; occasionally down; occasionally brilliant; always capable of springing the big upset any given year.
Sporadic success in men's basketball. One excellent 7-year run once. Truthfully, not their sport.
Dominant women's basketball
Awfully good baseball
Note to file: The highest finish in the Director's Cup by a non-D1 BCS football school was 23rd (Princeton). Is Princeton the model?
Model 2. Alabama
(No way on anyone's effing green or brown earth would I model UGA. No way. But it is really UGA. Or Alabama. Interchangeable.)
Football
Football
Football
Completely culturally different. Fans scolded by coach for leaving a few empty seats against Why Are We Playing These Guys Again U
Sister at Mizzou send you texts with pictures of fans peeing on the library in Columbia. (That's UGA.)
Football
Oh and once and awhile men's hoops is coached to a regional semi by a guy wearing hounds tooth something or another
Decent baseball historically, last CWS was 1999
I assume they play women's hoops.
Finished in 14th in 2023 Director's Cup
Newspaper clippings when you fire some low level admin in retaliation for suing after players die celebrating titles. (That too is UGA.)
Famous - even Donald Fagan knows they call Alabama the Crimson Tide.
Football!!!!!
Model 3. Gonzaga
Basketball
Basketball
Basketball
Completely culturally different. Smaller non-research Catholic School that dominates their league.
In the Pacific Time Zone!!!!!
Fans probably don't piss on libraries.
Basketball
Gonzaga Football is undefeated in 82 years! They are also winless and untied in 82 years....
They play baseball. Usually a few games above .500
Dang good in women's hoops.
Finished in 80th in 2023 Director's Cup.
Famous enough.
Basketball!!!!!
Model 4. Johns Hopkins
Split division sports (It gets tossed around here....)
Lacrosse!!!
Lacrosse!!!
Lacrosse!!!
The north side of Baltimore is a completely different vibe than Palo Alto.
One of my best friends at Stanford played baseball for Johnny Hopkins.
Famous for lacrosse and doctors.
Finished 1st in the Directors Cup. (Division III)
Do they play football? Yep. D2. But lower division football is more of a thing on the eastern seaboard. And why is there no western seaboard? My son's Navy Sprint Football team (175 pound limit) scrimmaged the no restriction Blue Jays, his Third Class year, I believe. They all made weight because Coach Major Lake wanted to make a point. Reports back indicated total annihilation. By Navy Sprint. To be fair, Navy Sprint is good, with a roster full of future Seals, Marines, and fighter pilots. Good enough to force Princeton to quit the sport for good at halftime.

Yeah, I was calming down.
But then I decided to see how much the 4 coastal schools got as a percentage of their annual operating revenue for doing this and I am back in full tantrum mode again.
