“The first week he got here, we have our whole playbook and he walks in not knowing any of our plays,” Palo Alto senior quarterback Declan Parker said. “The next day he comes, he knew every single play. It was crazy — he knows everything about football."

Very cool. Good for him and the kids!

Set the bar high.  Show those kids how it's done, that it can be done.

Tough job.  Paly is not good.  They just lost 42-0 to Los Gatos on Friday.

Is he actually on the sideline during the games? Or is he just sort of showing up at some practices to help the QBs?

I think he'd be a great coach.

I typically think that the best athletes don't make the best coaches. I'd rather have Steve Kerr coaching me than Michael Jordan since Kerr is less likely to say, "And at this point, you use your superhuman athletic ability to win the game." But I feel like Andrew Luck would be an incredible coach. Paly High is mighty Lucky. I wonder if he could be persuaded to cross to the other side of El Camino after practice to help coach our QB's.

I agree players often don’t make the best coaches, and it depends on the person. Sometimes people here clamor for former players (like Mark Madsen) for coach just kind of assuming they must be great at coaching.

But I am glad to hear this. Because maybe Luck does want to get into coaching, and maybe he will be really good at it, and I actually like high school football coaching. You can be innovative in it, you learn about people, development, teaching, motivating. There can be a lot of freedom in high school, too. So maybe in 4 years or whatever he’s ready to check out at the college level as an OC.

Yeah but if you wanted to look to an up-and-coming former Stanford QB in the coaching ranks you should look to the guy who is a first year position coach in the NFL and just coached a fifth round draft pick second year player to the #19 Total QBR in the NFL in week one and as I type is playing even better in week two in commanding another win (he says mischievously, but seriously, the problem was Shaw).

You could also look to the guy in the Pacific NW who’s working with Geno Smith who ranks #9 in Total QBR.

But seriously, Tavita needs to be soaking up everything he possibly can from Sleeping With Bieniemy.

Um, Madsen has 70-51 record as a head coach, and has won two conference championships in four years. His first year he went 11-19, last year went 28-9. Seems to be doing something right. . . .

Yes, he Deion'ed the Utah Valley team and it worked. (He's doing the same with Cal.)

The more analytical you can get about the game, the better a coach you can be.   Luck fits that.

Did Madsen really boot 90% of both Cals and Utah Valley's teams his first year there? Did he bring along suitcases of cash and celebrities?
