Taylor on CBS sports radio - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2023

Not sure if it's got a distinct YouTube link yet, but there was an interesting part where the host asks Taylor about Luck. Taylor, as many of us know, comes a little bit from the dry coachspeak school of media interaction. So it was notable that when the host pointed out that Luck's on the sideline a lot, and asked whether Taylor would like Luck to be coaching someday, Taylor gave (what sounded to me) like a very warm response to the idea, before noting Luck knows all the guys on the roster.

Then it was a bit drier about Daniels's performance (with a few mentions of Lamson), praising the sack avoidance and OL improvements and so on.

Re Luck, I've been watching YouTube replays of the '09 USC game, the '10 Big Game, Orange Bowl and some gems from 2011. A generational talent if there ever was one. Just helmet and shoulder-pads above any kid I've seen seen since, especially in the Pac12 this year. Penix comes closest, maybe. Luck was clearly NFL-ready in 2010. Right there with Elway a generation before.

Was talking with a buddy about the Voldemort due to AFLAC question on the UW-OU game "Name the players the last time the Pac-xx had two QBs as finalists." I said one had to be a Stanford QB, thinking the answer was Luck and Barkley. He thought I was thinking about Elway, who he assumed I believed to be the best Stanford QB of all time. While Elway might be the most successful Stanford NFL QB, I said no, as good as Elway was, Luck was the guy who I felt could lead the Cardinal to victory in every game in which he played. Long way to say, Andrew Luck is my QB1, and all-time Stanford MVP.

BTW, the answer to the AFLAC question was Aikman and Peete, who both lost to Barry Sanders, who might be the best college football player ever.

This is a generational thing, of course, as well as an emotional one. To me, and many others of a certain age, there is but one and only one Stanford QB on whom we place the golden laurel wreath. There is only one Cardinal Highsman Trophy recipient and Rose Bowl Champion who also wears two Super Bowl rings. Everybody's All-American. First name Jim. Surname Plunkett. The Greatest of All Time. There is no question, no doubt and no argument. Case closed.

These historical comparisons are inherently unfair.  Plunkett vs. Elway vs. Luck.  Being a great college football quarterback means different things in different eras.  Each of those three was a truly great college quarterback, each well suited to their era and to their teams and to the strengths and the weaknesses that surrounded them.

Bo Jackson is my pick for that honor.

CMAC was robbed - he had a better year than Barry Sanders' Voldemort campaign. (I think)

CMAC and TOBY. We’re robbed.

Yup. I didn't have a problem with Luck finishing second both seasons as well as the year Bryce Love finished second. But, CMAC and Toby, objectively speaking, outperformed the two people who finished head of them.

There was incredible media bias against Gerhart for some reason. I remember listening to a radio show talking about the various candidates. I can't remember all the panelists, but I know Archie Manning was one of them. They talked Ingram. They talked Tebow. They talked McCoy. They talked Suh. Stunningly, they never mentioned Toby at all. Not an iota of consideration. I was pissed then, and still am.
