WBB: Stanford 87 -- Hawaii 40 -
81alum - 11-05-2023
Preview:
Last year we played Hawaii in their tournament in the islands. We won 68-39. Brink had 5 blocks and 3 steals, and we forced Hawaii into 20 turnovers. This was one of Prechtel’s last “big” games—she led with 17 points and was 5/9 from three point range.
Here are the scoring highlights from that game:

Hawaii has had an exhibition game this season against a local team, winning (of course) 67-39. #23 McBee led their scoring with 13 points in 26 minutes. She is a 5’10” junior guard and barely played against us last year. Last year's leader, 5’7” junior Wahinekapu, is still active and was their second scorer this year in their exhibition. She shoots 33% from three point range, but takes 2/3 of her shots from closer to the net, and averages 12.5 ppg.
Hawaii has a bevy of short quick fast guards. They do have a 6’4” sophomore forward, Imani Perez, who started in their exhibition this year. She shot 57% from in close last year, playing 16 minutes per game. According to last year's announcers, Perez played with Lauren Betts at some level. They also have a 6’4” transfer from Michigan State, Brooklyn Rewers, who played sparingly last year at MSU.
On paper, Hawaii should be overmatched, but games are not played on paper. This will be a game more about us than about them. Who will Tara put on the court and when? We will play many more teams like them—with quick guards, and we need to show we have the players who can shut them down. After our offensive clinic during our exhibition, we need find our defensive groove against Hawaii.
There is no TV coverage but the game will be livestreamed.

My wife and I attended the Wahine Tournament in Honolulu last Thanksgiving and enjoyed watching three games in three days (all wins). One of the takeaways from our game against the host school was that they played very physically. They weren’t all that big last year either, but they played tough, intimidating basketball. I recall writing they they carried some of the island’s mythological energy into the game. They were on the ball for forty minutes. My guess is that we will get the same passionate game from them this time as well.
So, let’s hang onto our hats and come to Maples with a lot of mythological (and traditional) energy of our own! We will need a lot of Stanford Inspired Play against Hawaii’s Passion!

Very sadly I have a professional obligation that will make me miss a home game for the first time in years. Is there anyone who could record the livestream and make it available?
While I can't meet up with the Cardboarders Wednesday night, I will be sure to be there Sunday for Indiana.

I'll try. The software I use may still have the bug where it sometimes can't capture the audio, though.
Maybe Tony Lima will capture it too.
