OT: Harbaugh and Michigan -

Harbaugh with, IMHO, a symbolic slap on the wrist: can't be on the sideline for the remaining regular season games. (Presumably he can be in the skybox on the headset?)
Big 10 basically says this was not directed at Harbs, but as the face of the team he has to take the fall.

I doubt he can be there at all. If he is in the box or on the headset, he is still coaching. Would make no sense and would be another scandal for the B1G. I suspect he also can't be on the telephone to the "acting" either :-).
In any case, it is probable it won't matter. There will be an "emergency" motion filed in court to restrain the B1G until the "real" lawsuit is filed. I imagine they will find a friendly judge that will allow him to coach in person next Saturday. After that, it gets murkier, but I bet he will get an injunction and coach the last 3 games. Whatever punishment he is going to serve (if any) will be next year, IMO. In this case, delay is "good enough". It may affect whether JH is at Michigan next year though.

Under the suspension, Harbaugh is barred from the venue.
If Michigan delays the suspension, it could affect his availability for the postseason.

Quote from the Big 10 letter to Michigan:
"This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh," the conference said in its report. "It is a sanction against the University that, under the extraordinary circumstance presented by this offensive conduct, best fits the violation."

This is the conference's suspension of Harbaugh. The NCAA investigation and any action against individuals or organizations would be in the future.

True. It depends on how quickly the court case can move and what the outcome of the case is. I obviously don't know about either, but I am guessing that if one party wants to delay, they can push it well into the new year. There are no guarantees though. I would imagine Harbaugh thinks coaching against Penn St. (probably) and Ohio St. (almost assuredly) is critically important. Getting to the postseason at the top level is job 1.

Call me a cynic but I can see an outcome where it takes the NCAA several years to complete an investigation, locking the barn door too late after Harbs is ensconced in the NFL and Michigan is forced to vacate some wins and a trophy or two. And nobody in Ann Arbor will really care. They’ll remember the games and forget the hardware.

The more I read about this, the more I think Michigan should face a stiff penalty. Forfeits. Harbaugh can certainly coach. But let’s just say there’s a reason his hero is Bo Schembechler.
Personally, I think Michigan should fire him. But I think Qwerty is spot on. They don’t care, they’re winning.

I was surprised that Michigan did not succeed in getting a TRO in time to allow JH to coach against Penn St. Michigan won without him, as I suspect they would/will against Maryland. The "friendly" judge the Michigan lawyers attempted to get the TRO from was a former Michigan football player. Apparently he thought that stunk a bit too much and recused himself. The judge that then got the case was a Michigan alumna who majored in art. That didn't go so well as she did not issue the TRO. That is not to say she won't do so later, but she wasn't willing to do so quickly for the Penn State game. I would still be amazed if there isn't some kind of legal "relief" in place before the Ohio State game.

I think there are quite a few faculty and administrators at Michigan that agree with you, and have for a while. He is far from universally liked. There are certainly a lot of Michigan football fans that want him to remain as long as he is contending for national championships. If he loses to tOSU in two weeks, a lot of that support will evaporate. Fans are indeed fickle. If Michigan does in fact end up looking at significant penalties from either the B1G or NCAA, JH might very well need to find another job (probably in the NFL). He will probably have no trouble doing so.

I Love Harballs.
Just an incredible on field post game interview with the coach and running back. It was full of Harballs cliches/team building cultural. He's got this team 100% brainwashed.

I wonder if he’s pining for the good Ol days, when the only controversy was his alleged desire to get a dedicated bathroom installed next to his office in the athletic department…

I still harken back to a KNBR interview
while Harbaugh was the 49ers coach in their 8-8 season in which Brent Jones basically said he wouldn't want to be coached by Harbaugh under virtually any circumstances. And everything I've read about the man over the years makes me want to agree. I know many, many UMich alums who are happy with Harbaugh while acknowledging that he's not their kind of guy, but they're happy to rationalize his presence as long as he wins 10+ a year.

CODA:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/40764152/ncaa-hands-jim-harbaugh-4-year-show-cause-recruiting-violations
Harbaugh was hit with a 4 year show-cause penalty. They noted that he "engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations."
Quote:The NCAA had already put Michigan on three years of probation along with a fine and recruiting limits after reaching a negotiated resolution in the case. Harbaugh did not go along with the agreement, disputing allegations he failed to cooperate with investigators, so his case was handled separately.
"The panel noted that Harbaugh's intentional disregard for NCAA legislation and unethical conduct amplified the severity of the case and prompted the panel to classify Harbaugh's case as Level I-Aggravated, with penalties to include a four-year show-cause order. Subsumed in the show-cause order is a one-season suspension for Harbaugh," the NCAA said.
Unfortunately, NCAA rules are a bit of a wet blanket on enthusiasm unknown to mankind, which Harbaugh was not going to abide.

The NCAA has any authority about anything any more. That's a laugh. . . .

For some, ordering bacon cheeseburgers for breakfast is memorable. But not for Harbaugh.

Did you see where Harbaugh is going to be honorary captain at Michigan’s opener? I’ll bet Sherron Moore is really stoked about that! LOL!
