ACC college football coaching carousel - needle - 11-26-2023

Duke loses Mike Elko, who went 16-9 over two years. Elko returns to Texas A&M, where he previously had a stint as defensive coordinator.

Any thoughts of Duke as a nascent football power are undercut by this move. Severely undercut, I say!

Stanford does not play Duke until 2026.

Why not call this thread "Coaching Carousel '23-'24" because it doesn't just impact the ACC, and many more moves will be made.

That's the problem when you are not traditionally a big winner.
Get a coach who has some success and he gets snapped up by someone else.
We have certainly been there, multiple times.

Perhaps because Stanford, from a football perspective, is now in the ACC.

Dino Babers was let go a week ago from his duties at Syracuse.

Only one is officially done with the Pac-12 so far. I think the rest of our sports are still playing. . . .

Cross Country is done.

Fran Brown, at this moment the defensive backs coach at Georgia, is expected to be named as the next head coach at Syracuse.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2023/11/sources-syracuse-finalizing-agreement-to-make-fran-brown-next-football-coach.html

Stanford is scheduled to travel to Syracuse next fall.

Brown is black, and he replaces Dino Babers, also black. The ACC has one other black head coach, Tony Elliott at Virginia. This past season the Pac had one black coach, Deion at Colorado.

From a December 2022 AP story about the diversity in football coaching fires:

Quote:Barring any additional changes, there will be 14 Black coaches at 133 FBS teams next season — roughly 10.5% of overall coaches and a drop from 15 at the start of this season, even as the FBS division adds two new schools in 2023.

The lack of diversity remains striking in a sport where more than half the players identify as Black.

Duke appears to be ready to name a well-traveled assistant coach (defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas, La. Tech, Miami and Penn State) as its next HC:

Sources - Duke targets Penn State's Manny Diaz for head coach job - ESPN

Manny was the head coach at Miami from 2019-21, compiling a record of 21-15 (16-9).
