WBB: Stanford vs. Portland Friday 7pm - 81alum - 12-11-2023

Preview

At 7pm Friday the Portland Pilots comes to Maples. The game will be televised on Pac 12 Networks.

This year Portland is 6-5, ranked 102 by Massey.  That is considerably better than San Diego State, though not up to Belmont standards. They have historically been a good mid level team with some height, which is why (I presume) we are playing them for the 3rd year in a row.

They have lost to some good mid level teams like Cal Baptist and Villanova, but overall they do not look quite as strong as they were the last two years when they were a 20 win team each year.  Nevertheless, they are a well coached, disciplined team with some genuine talent.  Early in the year they did beat San Diego State handily 72-58, and they clobbered Oregon 91-60, but whether that says more about Portland than the sorry state of Oregon I don’t know. The game was played in Portland, but Duck fans were certainly not happy--Oregon had 14 turnovers in the first half.  Nevertheless, they seem stronger than several of our other pre season teams.

Last year we played them in Portland in November, winning 87-47. In last year’s game Jones led with 17 points, and we had 4 players in double digits. Here is last year’s thread on Portland:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=23713&highlight=Portland

The Portland Pilots (not to be confused with Portland State’s Vikings) are led, as they have been for the last two times we have played them, by Maise Burnham. Burnham—a 6’0” junior guard-- is scoring 12 ppg and shooting better than 40% from three point range.

Lucy Cochrane is a 6’6” senior from Australia who gives them true height in the post. She leads the Pilots in rebounding and blocks—lots of blocks.

Portland is a very good assisting team, assisting on 18 of 26 fgpg, and they are a fair defensive team, holding opponents to 63 ppg while scoring 71 themselves.  They hit 43% of their shots which is decent--Stanford is a very high 47%. These stats tell me they are a half-court team that is patient on offense and passes a lot before taking a good shot.

I think this is a good game to help our team get back in sync after the disappointing trip to Spokane—the second to last game before starting Pac12 play with a trip to Berkeley.

Yes, as I noted, I am not sure if that says more about Portland or more about Oregon.  Eye opening to be sure.

Oops, read right over that

Cochrane also leads the country in blocks per game (at 4.7). She had 5 blocks vs Oregon. Brink is a distant third with 3.3 blocks per game.

Also interesting to keep track of tonight is that Hannah Jump is only three 3-point made shots away from the Stanford career record.  She currently has 308 made threes (Kiana Williams had 311).

Quite extraordinary, considering that Oregon has a 6'8" player and and a 6'7" player, and Cochrane still was a block machine.  I am sure Brink and Iriafen will get some baskets, but I do hope our outside shooting is "on" tonight.

Interesting chalk talk with Tempie.  More when I get to a keyboard after the game.  Our suspicions that ill health at Gonaga affected more than just Brink seem to have some basis, although no excuses.  Team has been working to improve aggressive close defense, though that improvement will take time.  Portland both presses and plays zone, which is an unusual combo.  Their offense uses a lot of misdirection.

Portland is quite a down under team. Three from Australia and three from New Zealand.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Portland Friday 7pm - CompSci87 - 12-15-2023

Harriel and Ogden not warming up.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Portland Friday 7pm - 81alum - 12-15-2023

Harriel and Ogden have not dressed, although they are helping the team warm up and have no visible injuries.  Tempie noted that she could not comment on why they were out.

Great start. Hannah and Cam hitting early, and Talana hitting a fantastic stop and pop to go 9-0 and force a time out.

Brooke looking very good as well.

Demetre now hurt

Yeah good to see Demetre get some good shots going early
And Cam running the occasional de facto and impromptu point probably not what Coach drew up, but I love to see it anyway!

Defensive intensity, and/or better health is obvious.  Lepolo in particular has stepped up both her defense and her offense.
