WVB TX v NE - TonyLima - 12-17-2023

15-14 TX first set. Very scrappy play. NE has Stanford disease — 2 service errors in a row.

Pretty shockingly one sided match. Texas is cruising, en route to it's back to back title.

Not so shocking if you were at Stanford last weekend

We thought Stanford had an off day. But NE looked very much like us. Conclusion: TX is really that good. Will be posting video of the match later today for those who want to study the details.

I agree if you are suggesting it wasn’t a case of .Stanford playing poorly; it was a case of Texas being a significantly better team. Better than us,  better than Wisconsin and better than Nebraska . We played them tougher than any of the last thre they played.  They looked bigger , stronger and just plain better than anyone else..we might have been #2.

Now I’ll venture out.  I think Texas has given us an acid  test of portal vs development in women’s volleyball. Portal wins. Unless the rule changes, the Texas model will prevail. Don’t focus too much on recruiting though it’s important. Don’t worry too much about development. Instead figure out how to assemble the best team every year from whatever source you can transfer.

You may be vulnerable early but nigh on to invincible by tourney time.  If that is right, Stanford is at an insurmountable disadvantage over time. We will never be able to play the transfer game as well as others.

Please tell me I’m wrong.

Texas had six transfers this season.  Wisconsin had seven transfers this season.  Penn State had seven transfers.

The downside to transfers is many are grad students or seniors. One and done. There are only so many scholarships available. Potential elite prep players may start to wise up and realize some coaches want to bring in as many upper-classmen as possible each year so future playing time may be uncertain.

B1G 2022 Player of the Year, 6'5" OH Taylor Landfair,  has entered the transfer portal.  Today's word on the street is she has a deal lined up with Nebraska; as if they need more OHs.   The B1G is starting to become a story of the rich and the poor as many players are transferring within the conference.

Isn’t Nebraska already loaded with pin hitters?

RE: WVB TX v NE - BobK - 12-18-2023

One more covid year for WVB.

RE: WVB TX v NE - Softball Fan - 12-18-2023

Florida Head Coach Mary Wise has started calling for the number of WVB scholarships to be increased.

RE: WVB TX v NE - BobK - 12-18-2023

About 6-7 years ago it was close to being increased to 13. But still at 12

I feel it should be increased to 13, and, if necessary for budgetary reasons or Title IX reasons, reduce the number of WBB scholarships to 14.
WVB effectively has 7 starters; WBB has five starters. So with 14 scholarships WBB will still do fine.
