UC Davis comes to Maples at the awkward time of Wednesday at 1pm. It is not televised but Stanford promises to livestream it:

Tara has a relationship with Aggies coach Jennifer Gross. Gross has been at Davis for 12 years and became very successful there by implementing a highly sophisticated version of the Princeton offense. When Tara decided to move Stanford to the Princeton in the last decade, Gross and her assistants visited Stanford and helped educate our coaches on the finer points of the system.
Since then we have played Davis somewhat regularly. For some reason we did not play Davis last year, but we did in 21-22, beating them 68-42 at Maples. Jump had 17 points and Brink 11 in that game. The 20-21 matchup was cancelled—probably with Davis COVID protocols. In 2019 we defeated Davis 67-55.
When we play them, both teams tend to know each other’s plays, which makes for interesting defenses. Davis has sometimes used a weird “junk” zone defense that has slowed us down, but with Davis using a time consuming Princeton offense and throwing a creditable defense at us, the games have not been high scoring.
This year Davis is not off to its best start. It is 4-5, having lost to common opponent San Diego State, in addition to Pac 12 schools Oregon State and Washington State, among others. Massey has them at 172, which is marginally higher than Cal Poly and a lot worse than Portland’s ranking of 102.
Davis is led by 5’9” senior guard Evanne Turner, who we have faced at least twice before. She is hitting 43% of her three point shots, of which she takes about 6-7 attempts a game. She averages 17 ppg.
Davis has 6 players averaging 36% or more from three point range, 5 of them above 40%, and one (at only 6/11) above 50%. Clearly defending the perimeter is job number one on defense.
Locals will be particularly interested in redshirt sophomore center, 6’3” Megan Norris, from Menlo Park. She is hitting 56% of her shots and leads Davis in rebounding. She also can step out and has hit 7/17 three point attempts.
Davis rarely gives us a scare, but it always gives us a game with unique offensive and defense challenges. It will be fun to see the last tune-up before we head up to Cal next week to open Pac 12 play.

I really appreciate reading your colorful analyses of the incoming teams. They provide insights into the execution of the game and background that is not readily available anywhere else. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge of the game. It gives the game more dimensions. I always look forward to seeing what you’ve uncovered about our next opponent!

Thanks so much! It is almost all from past chalk talks and watching past press conferences. That stuff begins to accumulate after a while in the back of my mind ;)

Totally agree. I really enjoy these previews -- and also, sadly I'm missing this one as well, the first one this season. I was going until the Covid test said my cold was more than a cold. Rats!

Harriel and Ogden continue to be out but Bird said they should be back very soon.
Looking forward to seeing Jump break the all time three point record. Would be nice if it came early.
Very sparse crowd, though there is still a little time.

Score is 60-25 at halftime.
Didn't realize it was going to be this much of a mismatch.

We only outscored them 22-21 from the point when Tara sat Brink with 4:27 left in the 3rd quarter.

More on the chalk talk:
Since Gonzaga, the two priorities have been teaching people to stay out of foul trouble, and improving our defense, especially against uncontested layups. My note: the two do go together some. When you are afraid of fouling you may not defend as closely as you should. Staying out of foul trouble allows you to defend better.
Bird acknowledged that we are a different team without our two posts on the floor, and that the back-up bigs need experience to come together with the team. My guess is that this is why Tara put Demetre and Agara out there for more than half the minutes today.
Many questions about next year and the travel arrangements. Bird thought we would probably have 5 trips east, each trip playing two teams. The team already sometimes flies on private planes and suggested that this would be in the offing to reduce travel wear and tear.
My takeaways from this game:
1) I eat my words about Davis not allowing high scoring games. Their defense was not the junk zone I remembered, but a fairly ineffective man. They did make it challenging to get the ball inside, but we are a different team when we hit threes, and we did, forcing them to loosen up inside.
2) The key to making this an easy win were those early made threes, especially since Lepolo went 2/2 and Bogana as well as Jump were on. We shot 50% of our threes, and so Davis had no defense. The credible threat to shooting threes is important not because we are going to score most of our points that way, but to force the defense to guard the perimeter and not sag off into the paint, freeing up room for Brink and Iriafen and drives.
3) How are we doing at reducing fouls? Not that well. Brink had 2 and Iriafen had 3, both playing a lot less than 40 minutes. Tara I am sure is upset at Brink's first foul, which she got poking at a ball at the perimeter and scrambling for the ball. In other words, Brink was overly aggressive more than 25 feet away from the basket. She seemed to acknowledge it and did not react with her usual astonishment when she was called. On the other hand, Brink did poke a ball away and took it coast-to-coast for a layup, so she is capable. But the risk/reward calculus probably indicates she should play more conservatively when defending so far away from the basket.
4) How is that defense coming along? Hard to know against this overmatched opponent, although Davis did get a fair number of layups and long time nemesis Turner nailed a bunch of very short step-back jumpers. A 40 point win is a 40 point win, but we did give up 8 made threes, which won't get it done against a more evenly matched team. Furthermore, the focus of our scouting report was no doubt Evanne Turner, and we gave her 17 points. She did play 36 minutes, so a lot of the time she was not being guarded by our starters. But still.
5) All 5 of our starters had good days on offense, I would say. Lepolo's threes really helped, and she had a couple of beautiful assists with no turnovers. Brink and Iriafen did what they always do when they can stay in a game. Bosgana had one of her better games, shooting well for 14 points but also rebounding and assisting. And of course Jump.
6) Agara and Demetre played reasonably well, with 10 points each. But the offense certainly was disjointed when neither Iriafen or Brink were in. It is not that Agara and Demetre cannot score, but rather they do not seem to keep the flow of the offense intact. I wish I could diagnose why, but both the stat sheet and the eye test agree on this point. I imagine they will steadily improve with practice and experience. Agara is a great talent around the rim and I predict very good things in her future.
7) Congratulations to Hannah Jump, Stanford's new 3 point leader. They played a nice message from Kianna Williams (the former leader) congratulating her, and then went to a recording of "Jump!" (is that Von Halen?)
8) Also thanks to Tara, for recording a tribute to Sandra Day O'Connor, that was played at the start of the game. Tara had an affinity for Stanford alum O'Connor, who was, like Tara, a pioneer for women's equality. Tara remembered visiting the Supreme Court with the 96 Olympic team, and Justice O'Connor took them upstairs in the Supreme Court building where there was a basketball court. As O'Connor put it, "the highest court in the land." Apparently O'Connor also played bridge with Tara's mom.

The non-conference scheduling proves Stanford can run up the score against creampuffs. Once we get into conference it will be a different ballgame against some opponents.

Well, San Diego State did beat Davis this year. Davis is not the usual Davis, for some reason. Even so, we need some "creampuffs" at this time of year to give the freshmen opportunities to play and adjust to the college level. The hope is that by now they will be strong enough to play against conference opponents--but freshmen always need a transitional period.
So yes, we have had some creampuffs, but we have also had the 14th toughest schedule so far in the country. Indiana, Duke, Florida State, and Gonzaga are not lightweights. For comparison, here is the strength of schedule so far for the Pac 12 schools:
UCLA 7
Stanford 14
Colorado 17
Arizona 27
Utah 31
WSU 49
USC 57
ASU 76
Oregon 97
Cal 116
Oregon State 174
Washington 207

Agree, it's been a balanced preseason schedule that has provided some tough competition along with some creampuffs. Personally, I would have liked the team to have played one more tough away game on the opponent's court. Indiana and Duke were home games and FSU was a neutral site. The game at the Kennel was great until Cam got sick. Just don't think we've had enough hostile-arena type experience to battle test us before the conference schedule starts. Road wins are going to be so important.

It's an AP story by Janie McCauley, who often covers Stanford WBB for the AP. Definitely nice that the Washington Post picked it up.

My capture of the livestream will be here when YouTube finishes uploading and processing it.
https://youtu.be/oyRdLFCwFVM
As usual, a lo-res version will appear first, then a hi-res version a bit later.
Audio didn't start right at the beginning, only with about 7:38 left in the first quarter. I don't know if that was a problem with my capture or if it was on the stream for everyone.
