I wasn’t going to post anything until it was over. Congrats! If you had told me in December that we would beat AZ and UCLA (at Pauley!) in consecutive games, I would have questioned your sanity. Congrats to the team! Love Carlyle!

Understand your frustration..but I think we ought to celebrate a nice win. A win, by the way, in which Stanford made adjustments and UCLA did not. By most standards , that suggests UCLA was out coached. It exactly your narrative I suspect, but that’s the way it looked from here.

The Directors' Cup likely hinges on men's hoops getting some points as Texas will be bringing in close to the maximum on the four required sports. So I sure hope Haase and the crew have discovered something that will get them to a turnaround season.

Sorry. That was an entirely sarcastic/ironic/whatever post. I was just amused by the fact that, less than a week ago, a number of Boarders were, literally, sending letters to Muir about firing Haase, and now, in those five days, he’s had one of the best two game stretches for Stanford MBB in probably a decade. Life’s crazy sometimes…

And UCLA is the worst they've been in about a dozen. "One of the best two game stretches for Stanford MBB in probably a decade" being a fantastic upset followed by a win over a likely bottom half of conference team is...uh...not the ringing endorsement some think it is.

We've seen this movie before under Haase. We have 2-3 good games in a row and people get all hot and tingly and think we've turned the corner. Subsequent games prove we haven't.
Maybe this will be an exception though. I hope so.
BTW to say that the UCLA coach was a little upset after the game would be an understatement.

Watched the first ten minutes the and final 20. The former was absolutely expected, the latter was a pleasant surprise. At this point, I look forward to the SC game but, beyond that, seven hapless seasons of HaaseBall has me deep in wait-and-see territory. What's more is the fact that this is not the UCLA we're all familiar with. And we're not even into the second week of January. When does Spring Practice start?

Anybody catch the UCLA coach's post game comments?
If you thought Mike Leach used to throw his players under the bus........

He surely points to HIS problem when he says the players he recruited/bought and coached/taught have no “aptitude”.
He gets extra credit for “I don’t even care if you miss it, just score.”

I didn't get to see whole game.
Looks like Bynum wasn't a key part of it.
Any insight into why he wasn't in there in crunch time?
not 100% well? not played well? (his stats not look good)
BTW yes UCLA (and USC) are clearly down (so far) from their best years.
but still to win in their House, is a big deal for us.

They just cleared 0.500 after a weak non conference schedule. Tournament or Terminate.
UCLA is 6-8 by the way. That this was probably one of the best two game stretches for MBB in a decade says a lot more about how lousy this decade has been for Stanford than anything about Haase, other than he's part of the lousy. But, fun to punk UCLA at their house as we turn out the lights on the Pac.

It is crazy that Haase of all people accomplished something twice that had never been done before including by Mike Montgomery (in seven chances), which is to beat Arizona and UCLA in back-to-back games.
Dec. 31 2023 (Arizona 82, Stanford 100) and January 3 2024 (Stanford 59, UCLA 53)
Jan. 23, 2021 (UCLA 72, Stanford 73); Jan. 28, 2021 (Stanford 73, Arizona 64)

Simply more proof the conference isn't what it once was - beating a sub-.500 UCLA in 2024 is nothing special, and we gave Arizona its third loss in the past five games, so they were hardly riding high coming into Maples. Even after those wins, Massey has us at 85. We're 101 in NET.
Happy for the players, but this doesn't (and shouldn't) in any way change anyone's view of Haase's long-term viability on the Farm.
And this was one of the better back-handed insults I've seen in a while, from the UCLA coach, in the earlier linked article:
Quote:The Bruins compounded their shooting woes by committing 10 of their 16 turnovers in the second half, a total that Cronin called “ridiculous” given the defense his team faced. “There is no press, there is no trap,” Cronin said. “So why are you turning the ball over? What would the reason be?”

well, he did credit his players for inventing new ways to turn the ball over . . .

Look, everyone knows the solution to our problems is to fire Haase, as is clearly proven by what happened the last time we faced such problems in basketball and solved them by firing the coach. If we hadn’t done that, we wouldn’t have gotten … oh, wait a minute. Never mind…

Couple of silly to's in first half and avoidable one early 2nd half. Gealer played rest of second with no to's, couple of assists. Missed two open 3's. Generally guarding a small guard so wasn't overpowered. Looks quicker than last year.

Ditto. I would only ad that we can really ruin enjoyment of a season by finding fault with wins. That’s a strange approach but fans are entitled to be strange, even irrational. I intend to enjoy the wins and agonize over the losses. If Hasse coaching contributes to a loss, I have no problem criticizing him for it. After all, I coached a very successful YMCA 6th grade team.
I’ll even have the insolence to praise him when his coaching helps his team win. The UCLA win was deserving of praise. That’s true regardless of past years.”
