Bob, do you ever make the trek to Stanford to watch MVB? I admit I haven't been to a game, and their games aren't always available.remotely.
I guess if you're coming to the WBB game, you might stick around for MVB.
The good news for remote viewing is that Sunday's 5PM game is to be live streamed, and Monday's 5PM game will be on PAC-12, both games against #10 Loyola Chicago. Other than a FloVolleyball stream, the next opportunity to watch them (in person or remotely) is in February.

Loyola is on their way back from Hawaii, where they lost 3-0 Wednesday and won 3-2 Friday.

If I’m down for basketball softball baseball track I would go if possible. But those sports come first

Hawaii's preseason ranking was #3. Loyola was 21-7 last year, but just 7-5 on the road.
Loyola has three true frosh, all very talented, playing a great deal; Fabikovic, a 6'6" OH from Czech Republic, and Jake Read, a 6'4" frosh from Newport Harbor. Schobel is a 6'1" frosh setter who started and seems very accomplished, 37 assists, 9 digs. Didn't have any blocks in five sets...assuming a standard rotation, I'd aim every hit at him.
Their big hitter is Parker Van Buren, second team all america last year. 6'9". Cannonball serve.
Stanford has its work cut out for them with this team. They're at Burnham tomorrow, Maples on Monday.

And it wasn't close (25-19, 25-13, 25-20) as Loyola couldn't get close. Big crowd (728). Stanford played great defense (24-14 lead in digs), only had 8 hitting errors (vs. 14 for Loyola). Middle Nathaniel Gates went a perfect 7 for 7...7 sets, 7 kills. Very rare. Turner, uncharaceteristically, blew two serve receives (he's normally one of the better defenders), but Stanford had just 24 errors (hitting, serving, setting and passing) against Loyola's 44.
Cardinal plays Loyola again tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. at Maples. Tickets are a bargain... ;)

82 Card - 01-08-2024
I expect today's match to be much closer. In Hawaii, Loyola got swept in the first match too and then won in 5 on Friday. In yesterday's match, they started off cold but slowly warmed up so that the third set was much more competitive. It seems like it takes them a while to adjust to the travel.
RE: Men’s Volleyball -
82 Card - 01-08-2024
Managed to avoid the reverse sweep today. Won in 5. Scores were 25-21, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27, 15-12.
Next up is UCSB at 6 on Friday and 5 on Saturday. Although the Stanford site doesn't show any video, the UCSB site indicates the matches will be on ESPN+. Today's AVCA Coaches poll has UCSB at 14 and Stanford at 8.

Here's the livestream from Sunday's match (still uploading to YouTube as I post this). I captured it but forgot to trim and upload it until now.

UCSB is 2-1 on the season, all home matches. They squeaked by #20 George Mason (3-2), and were beaten 3-1 by MPSF league opponent Grand Canyon (3-0 in league on the season). GCU is a good team, they beat UCSD and Northridge, both 3-0. UCSB should be a good match.
RE: Men’s Volleyball -
82 Card - 01-12-2024
Stanford won first 2 at Santa Barbara. Up 6-5 in third.

After dropping third and fourth sets, barely escaped the reverse sweep by taking 5th by 15-13. Rematch tomorrow.
RE: Men’s Volleyball -

Great match. Stanford won the first two on their way to a five set victory, winning 16-14 in the fifth game. Stanford had 61 errors, including 26 service errors, almost twice as much as UCSB. Hopefully they can clean that up. Kevin Lamp and Moses Wagner really struggled hitting. Stanford blocked pretty well across the board, five players had at least three blocks each, as a team they nearly doubled the UCSB blocks. Luke Turner did reasonably well as a 6'6" libero (he's listed as an OH on the roster). Theo Snoey had one block and one assisted block across five games as the oppo (blocks the other team's main pin hitters). Interesting.
Will Rottman led with 22 kills, and given that he's a Santa Barbara native, I imagine he had fun in front of his friends and family.
Today's game is at 5 p.m. at the Thunderdome. Incidentally, I really like the Thunderdome, UCSB's gym. It hosts the largest HS MVB tournament in Southern California, and they're passionate about volleyball down there. 753 fans attended.
RE: Men’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 01-13-2024
Wow, a 6'6" libero defies logic but it must be working. I was at the Thunderdome back when the Stanford women's vb team played there. It's one of the more unique sports venues in California.
Next year the NCAA will allow two players to wear the libero jersey but only one can be on the court at a time.

Stanford beat UCSB in four today (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21), with both Alex (11 kills) and Will (16 kills) Rottman starring. I mentioned in the earlier post that the Rottmans were Santa Barbara natives...I should also point out that their father was a two-time All American at UCSB, and played professionally in France and on the AVP tour, and their uncle Steve Rottman played at USC and played professionally on the AVP tour.
Stanford was down to 42 errors today (from 62 yesterday), so...progress.
Next Friday and Saturday, Stanford will participate in the First Point Collegiate Challenge in Austin, Texas. They will open against #7 Penn State at 4:30 on Friday, then will play #13 Ball State at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, presumably followed by a quick trip to the airport.
BTW, I think the MPSF is going to be pretty tough this year. Here's the current preseason standings, a collective 23-1. BYU lost one to Lewis:
T-1. Grand Canyon (4-0)
T-1. UCLA (4-0)
T-1. BYU (3-1)
T-1. Stanford (4-0)
T-1. USC (3-0)
T-1. Pepperdine (3-0)
T-1. Concordia (2-0)
RE: Men’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 01-14-2024
The Rottmans are a legendary clan of vb players. Back in the day I was at a girls club tournament. Emily Rottman, Steve's daughter, was on the same team as the Wopat sisters. Her mother Suzie was there with Randy Stoklos who she was dating at the time. Emily went on to play at the University of Virginia.

Great win, 21, 21 and 19. Sweep of #7 ranked Penn State (4-1) on a neutral court in Austin TX before 673 fans. Fun match. Stanford had the hitting advantage (and passing and setting advantage), .341 to PSU's .195. Alex Rottman was the only one who had a rough time hitting; oppo Moses Wagner (.423), and Will Rottman (.308), both 5th yr senior middles Adam Chang (.714) and Nathaniel Gates (.667) did well (although they aren't set very often). Still can't believe they have a 6'6" libero...
2 p.m. PT today, Stanford plays #14 Ball State (7-3), who just lost to #13 USC. Ball State hasn't lost at home, and hasn't won away from home.
Next poll comes out on Monday, 1/22. UC-Irvine, which lost to George Mason and is 3-1 should drop. Penn State should drop. Stanford has Northridge in two weeks, then circle your calendars for #3 Hawaii (3-1) on Wed. Feb. 7 and Fri. Feb 9. Hawaii had a home, five set loss to Loyola of Chicago.
Stanford is now 5-0. This could be a pretty special team. #1 ranked UCLA is scheduled for the end of March. If Stanford keeps improving...and it looks like Coach Kosty is figuring out his lineups...then who knows?
