WBB: Stanford 66 Utah 64 - 81alum - 01-09-2024

Preview: Utah

We head to Utah for a 5pm game on Friday. The game will be televised by Pac 12 Networks.

The last trip to Utah was our final regular season game last year, and it ended badly. Utah won 84-78 in a game in which we could not stop Gianna Kneepkins, who had 28 points in front of a festive crowd of 9600 in Huntsman Center.  Utah was not able to shut our own offense down as other Pac 12 teams had done, but it scored at such a pace that it did not matter.  Giving up 84 points is not what Tara's teams routinely do.

This year, Kneepkins is out with an ACL injury. Isabel Palmer, the 5’9” senior guard was a likely  replacement, but Palmer has been out for even longer than Kneepkins and I have found no word on when she will be back.

And there is the conundrum. Kneepkins was the biggest star on a very good Utah team, but she has been out for the last 7 games and her team has had time to adjust. Utah is certainly not as good a team without her as with her, but it is still a very good team playing in what will be (for us) a very hostile environment. Maybe instead of being a possible Natty contender, Utah has fallen to the level of a Gonzaga. And that is not a reassuring thought.

Utah is ranked 19th in the AP poll, 18th by Massey, and is 11-4. It lost at Baylor, it lost in a tourney to South Carolina, and it has lost 2 of its last 3 games to Colorado and Arizona—the latter a one point loss on the road. It will be eager to get back on track at home against us. It does not have a marquee win yet, but it has put up some dizzying numbers, including 60 and 70 point wins and six games over 100. Most of that was not in league play, and some of it before Kneepkins went out.

Without Kneepkins, Utah’s scoring leader is Alissa Pili, who is also in the conversation as one of the best players in WBB. Pili is a 6’2” forward, a senior who transferred from USC two years ago. She is not as tall as a typical “big” but has such excellent moves that she is virtually unstoppable one on one. She averages 23 points and 67%, and had 37 points in Utah’s loss to South Carolina. She also shoots the three at 50%, and this is not fluke of few trys—she has made 28 so far. Figuring out a way of stopping Pili without getting Brink and Iriafen in foul trouble will be a major issue. She seems tailor made, with her spins and moves, to attract those inside fouls.

Jenna Johnson, the 6’2” senior, is the other forward. She averages 9 points and leads Utah with 7 rpg. She also shoots 37% from three point range.

Kennady McQueen is the other half of what used to be the McQueen/Kneepkins duo, and McQueen is an excellent shooting guard. She averages 10 points and shoots the three at 44%.

Those three are the core of a very good team. In addition, Ines Vierra, a 5’6” junior guard from Portugal, has started 12 games and played all 44 minutes against Arizona. She is the point guard, and has 100 assists to 34 turnovers, averaging 7 ppg.

Dasia Young, a 5’11” senior forward, has been the fifth starter recently. Her three point shooting is not as sharp as nearly everyone else on the team, but she is capable, and has scored in double digits about half the time.

No one seems to be able to stop Pili, so the key will be to limit her to the 20s, prevent Utah from getting the rest of its offense in sync, and for our own offense to heat up. We won’t have a good outcome if our three point shooting goes cold, if we turn the ball over, or if Pili gets our bigs into foul trouble.  But Utah does not have the full talent it thought it would, and I think our prospects are better than they were a year ago when we staggered into Huntsman after a team-travel disaster, and staggered out with a loss.

Thanks 81alum. Another great preview. I'm anticipating a really challenging game, the first of an intense road trip.

Agree on both.
I'm in the dreaded and namby-pamby milquetoast but surprisingly accurately described state of "cautiously optimistic".
Hoping for Cam and her bigs campadres to play as usual, on O and rebounding strong on D, and someone of Jump/Lepolo/Harriel?/anyone?anyone? to get hot hoisting some 3's.
Best scenario on the 3's if is spread around a little, so they have to go out and guard all our guards, can't pull this sagging in shenanigans.

I am interested to see if the team has matured since the "shellshock" of Gonzaga.  This will be a similar hostile environment.  How will the younger players weather the psychological stresses?  Will they be less flustered than at Gonzaga?

Utah played Arizona after the team and staff were hit with food poisoning.

Quote:Utah women’s basketball has been hit with a major case of food poisoning ahead of their game against Arizona today according to the broadcast.
HC Lynne Roberts is giving it a go.
Kennady McQueen was not available during shoot around.
Alissa Pili appears to be unaffected.

Agree with your take.

FYI...in this instance, it would be "comadres" instead of compadres.

Grumble….  I pay for Sling and I pay extra for their sports package so I can get the regional PAC-12 channels and the PAC-12 Insider channel.

But the PAC-12, with their infinite reruns of who-cares-what, has another channel that wasn’t included for Sling. I’m sure it is PAC-12 marketing that makes sure this WBB game between ranked teams is never going to be rerun on any other PAC-12 channel. (Sunday’s game is on 2 channels live and then rerun later that evening.)

What channel is that?

The Pac-12 event page for this game says it will be on Pac-12 Bay Area and the main Pac-12 channel. So does Comcast's schedule.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah, Friday 5pm - M T - 01-11-2024

The PAC-12 TV listings show a schedule for “PAC-12 Network”, “PAC12HD” which shows the game at 5pm. Their (and Sling’s)schedule for “PAC-12 Bay Area”, “P12BAHD” shows FB in 60 at 5pm, Classic WBB at 6pm.

The Pac-12 event page for this game says it will be on Pac-12 Bay Area and the main Pac-12 channel. So does Comcast's schedule.

My Comcast schedule lists all the PAC-12 feeds in the ToGo section. It only shows the game on the national feed. The game is not listed on the Bay Area and Mountain feeds. In doing a little googling about Sling, I noticed that all the publicity about PAC-12 refers to "all 6 regional feeds" while the publicity for Fubo refers to 7 feeds. For most events, it wouldn't matter because they usually are also on one of the regional feeds. It seems odd that Sling wouldn't carry what most of us think of as the main feed.

On the other hand PAC-12.com says it will also be on Bay Area feed. It's not unusual for the Comcast schedule to be out of date. This may also be true on Sling. If not, probably can watch on PAC-12.com. Normally, as long as your carrier shows you as having any of the PAC-12 channels on your subscription, PAC-12.com will let you watch all of them.

Nope.  Sling has never been listed as one of the providers that can watch through PAC-12.com.

Will the last person to resign from Pac-12 Networks please turn out the lights and lock the door as you leave?

The Pac-12 web site is pretty screwed up, with the schedule page contradicting the event page. Apparently this has confused Sling too. Personally I tend to believe the event page and Comcast in this case, but of course that may be risky. MT mentioned to me at the last game that Sling said the game would only be on for an hour, so DVR recordings might stop then. Comcast had the schedule correct and my recording on my Comcast DVR had the whole game, so I'm hoping that will be the case again.

To clarify, here's where the event page says the game will be on Pac-12 Bay Area. Go to the event page at https://pac-12.com/womens-basketball/event/2024/01/12/stanford-utah, and note where it says "Pac-12 Networks (i)" near the top of the page. The "i" is in a little gray circle. Click on the "i", and this pops up:

Streaming on:

Pac-12 Bay Area

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah, Friday 5pm - crackpot - 01-11-2024

ARRRGHHH!!! I set it to record both the "1-hour" broadcast and whatever is being recorded aftr that. But I'm guessing I should be prepared to have it kick me out one hour in. Stupid @#@!!

Can we look forward to at least something better next year? Please?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah, Friday 5pm - CompSci87 - 01-12-2024

For the Utah game, I see Comcast has the weird Pac-12 BA schedule showing too. My DVR is set to automatically record Stanford WBB, and so it is going to record the main Pac-12 channel (it's on 1329 here on Palo Alto) from 5 to 7.

My Sling-TV online guide shows the Stanford-Utah game being (re)broadcast from 10:30pm-midnight Pacific (Friday Jan 12).  I often record both the live game and the rebroadcast, in case something weird happens.

Thanks, but...  It appears someone at PAC-12 has been playing with today's schedule and made things more confused.  I'd have to guess that Sling got their (different-than-yesterday) schedule from PAC-12.com at some point in the last 24 hours, as it has for PAC-12 Bay Area no live game and an (alleged) 10:30PM (PST) replay.

But in the meantime, PAC-12,com now shows the game being broadcast live at 5PM on P12BAHD and replayed at 1:30AM.
(So, the 10:30PM recording will get a different game.... maybe.)

Sigh....

Giving credit where credit is due.... The PAC-12 web site indicates Dustin Rocke is apparently the person responsible for this aspect of operations.

(I'd have to suspect his parents intentionally gave him a name reminiscent of a desert. Maybe they thought it was cute.)

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah, Friday 5pm - crackpot - 01-12-2024

Nice to be watching Pac-12 Bay Area and they're saying the game is coming up on Pac-12 Network which, AFAICT, doesn't even exist (unless you can log in to Pac-12 and watch from one of the listed providers).

They'd truly rather show reruns of year-old games?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Utah, Friday 5pm - 82 Card - 01-12-2024

On our system, the game is in fact streaming on the Bay Area feed even though the schedule says reruns.
