Saban retirement raises interesting question … - TonyLima - 01-10-2024

… can any of them get into Stanford?

FYI she’s a CPA in St. Louis, was a cheerleader at U. Mizzou, married.

Well there was Tyler Buchner but maybe that was a dodged bullet. As for admissions, I don't know but didn't CMac get in with a 21 ACT and Sherman with a 990 SAT?

Not all that impressive and sometimes I think the standards for football players on here are grossly overblown.

The better QB example is Dylan Lonergan.

I wonder what was the biggest missed Stanford recruit who was close to actually committing.  Jameis Winston comes to mind.  He would have been H-award runner up no doubt however.

Emeka Okafor.

Alabama press release from December on Graduation Success Rates:

Quote: It marks the 15th year in a row that the Tide football squad has ranked in the top four in the SEC by GSR

Explanation from the NCAA site of what GSR represents:

Quote: This rate was designed to approximate a true
student-centered measure of graduation (the student graduated from any fouryear college within the six-year window) by essentially passing likely transfers
from one college’s cohort to another’s cohort. GSR calculations also deal better
with circumstances such as mid-year college entry (such entrants are not
included in the FGR).

Alabama's GSR for the 2016 cohort (most recent) was 93 percent, certainly below Stanford's GSR of 96 percent, but not very far off.

And while some believe the GSR is incredibly flawed because transfers out never count against the school they leave, Alabama was second in the SEC, behind only Vanderbilt's 95 percent GSR. Alabama's GSR truly shines compared to Georgia's godawful 41 percent.

I think Max Borghi would have done well here. He would have had a much better collegiate career and I bet our record would have been better too.

I think we dodged a bullet there too...

Overblown yes, grossly no.

Saban has retired without ever beating Stanford. His Michigan State team lost to Stanford 38-0 in the 1996 Sun Bowl.

Todd Husak with some lethal tweets.....
Quote:Congratulations to Coach Nick Saban on an incredible career. Countless coaches and players will forever be indebted to him for their careers and education.

My favorite memory will be Stanford completely smashing his Michigan State team in the 1996 Sun Bowl 38-0.

And for Petey-

Quote:The dream of a coach is to have players talk about their impact like this. I've had it with guys like Willingham, Diedrick, Mendoza. Congrats to Carroll on an amazing career.

My favorite memory will be him asking Harbaugh why Stanford ran up the score on him when he was at USC.

Carroll's comment, and Harb's retort, go right to the root of both guys' style. Smart ass v. smart ass. I LOVED IT, then and now!

AND THE EMEKA OKAFOR SCAB HAS JUST BEEN RIPPED OFF AND IS GUSHING ANEW. HERE’S TO ANOTHER 20 YEARS OF TRYING TO HEAL.

I think every fan base thinks they missed out on Emeka Okafor. After UCONN crushed our title hopes in 2004, GT sites were full of posts lamenting that he didn't come to Tech like he was supposed to because of....something.

According to the interwebs, Okafor spurned Arkansas and Vanderbilt for UCONN.  We suffer in unpublished silence.

I guess Montgomery's deal was that he didn't know if Collins was coming back so he didn't pursue Okafor at all?  I assume there were zero available scholarships, otherwise that was stupid.

RE: Saban retirement raises interesting question … - GoodGrief - 01-11-2024

Sigh, here goes:
Okafor absolutely wanted to come to Stanford and would have committed if we offered a scholarship. Jason Collins held the last remaining scholarship (I believe Rob Little had already accepted a scholarship), but it was likely he was going to the NBA. Montgomery’s fatal flaw was that he didn’t push Collins to make a decision fast enough. So while Collins dawdled, Okafor had to commit to UConn for fear of being left out entirely.

Collins went to the NBA like we all knew he would, UConn went on to win a national championship, and Stanford was left with one of the most amazingly talented teams in the country that spent a lot of time undefeated and #1, and fell just short.  (the team included I think PG Chris Hernandez, SG Matt Lottich, SF Josh Childress, PF Matt Haryasz, and C Rob Little). And Rob Little was a good player—it’s just that scoring, shot-blocking machine Okafor (also, a good, smart, hard-working guy) would have been the last piece of the puzzle, especially with Childress in the backcourt.

RE: Saban retirement raises interesting question … - Langdude - 01-12-2024

IIRC, Trajan Langdon was almost a Stanford man?

RE: Saban retirement raises interesting question … - BobK - 01-12-2024

A reminder that Okafor was a spring signing. Every one passed over him prior to his Sr HS season.
