WBB: Stanford 88 Oregon 63 (TVD ties Coach K) - 81alum - 01-17-2024

Preview:

Oregon comes to Maples for a Friday game at 7pm. The game will be televised on Pac 12 networks.

Hopefully on Friday someone will remember to set up the bleachers for the Band. In the last home game vs. Washington someone apparently forgot and the Band was turned away from the game. So says a neighboring fan, in any case.

Oregon is one of those dangerous teams that has talent and good coaching but which is having a down year, by their standards. One never knows when Graves will pick up the pieces and forge a strong effort. There are recent signs that the team is coming together, just in time for our matchup.

Oregon is 11-7 and is coming off a sweep of the Arizona schools in Eugene. They are ranked 51 by Massey which is a little better than Cal and a little worse than Washington. Massey gives them a 10% chance against us. The NET has them at 105. They have lost, often decisively, to every ranked team they have played, including Baylor, USC, and UCLA. Oregon State also walloped them, as did Portland and even Santa Clara. Their best win was their most recent: Arizona.

What has gone wrong at Oregon? This is a steep fall from 4 years ago when they beat us badly 3 times on their way to what would likely have been a national championship for Oregon but for COVID. Oregon has hemorrhaged talent. Just this year Sedona Prince transferred to TCU, Endyia Rogers to Texas A&M, and Tehina Pao-Pao to South Carolina. Live by the transfer and die by the transfer—a couple of these had previously transferred IN to Oregon and then took their free agencies elsewhere.

Graves still has talent, however, and it would be a mistake to underestimate it. Oregon received half a dozen transfers in, and it clearly has been a challenge to fit all the new parts together.

Oregon is led by 3 double digit scorers, and at the top of the list is Grace VanSlooten. VS is a 6’3” sophomore forward who was all-freshmen in the Pac 12 last year and who has continued to do well this year. She plays pretty much every minute, average 16 ppg (almost all from inside).  She often plays more of a wing position than being always directly in the paint--but she scored mostly inside the three point line.

She is joined by 6’8” junior center Phillipina Kyei, who averages 12 ppg and 12 rpg. Thus Oregon has the height inside to match up with us in a way that no other team this year has. Kyei might actually bother Brink and Iriafen, and VanSlooten never seems to get into foul trouble. The inside game may not be as big an advantage for us against Oregon as it has been against other teams.

Oregon’s second leading scorer is 5’9” sophomore guard Chance Grey—also all freshman last year and all-defensive honorable mention. With Pao Pao’s transfer Grey has become the point guard. This year she is averaging 15ppg, shooting 39 treys along the way, and has more assists than turnovers.

Beyond those three Oregon starts 6’1” freshman guard Sophia Bell, and recently has gone for a “three big” lineup with 6’7” sophomore forward Kennedy Basham starting. Interestingly, those two are among the few remaining players who are not transfers.

Oregon thus presents unique challenges, given that they start 6’8” and 6’7” players, not to mention their superstar VanSlooten at 6’3”. They have not been a strong three point shooting team—Grey shoots 36% but is their only reliable trey maker. Figuring out how to defend all that height without Brink and/or Iriafen getting into foul trouble will be a potential challenge. And when we are on offense, Oregon has every incentive to pack the paint. We shall see if Bell can guard Jump. But we will likely need points from people other than our usual three.  There will be plenty of opportunities for Demetre and Agara.

Another helpful preview!
Not that I don't have enough in life to worry about, but I add to it a worry of this being a trap game for us.
Any thought of Oregon being "down" will just feed the wrong game preparation.
We're likely back to something I droned on about earlier in season, that is, Lepolo/Harriel/Clardy need to do what they normally do with ball handling, but also absolutely must hit enough outside shots to deserve being closely guarded out in the back 40 acres.
(I assume Jump will always be guarded outside regardless due to her long well earned reputation)
Otherwise paint will be packed and Brink/Iriafen/Agara will find it a long slog of a game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - M T - 01-17-2024

GoStanford.com lists this game as "Blood Donation Awareness" by Stanford Medicine, during a National Blood Donor month.

If you're not a regular blood donor, you may not realize this is one of the seasons when donations fall off, resulting in blood shortages.
(Winter-time respiratory infections reduce the number of people donating)
Ten days ago, the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage.
On Monday, Stanford Blood Center sent an email to donors indicating they had an urgent need for all blood types.

I've donated a number of times over the years to the Stanford Blood Center.
Most people give whole blood, which takes usually less than 45 minutes (about the time to watch a half of WBB).
If you know your schedule, you can make an appointment, but I usually do a drop-in.

If you're not sure if you're eligible to donate, full details are at their site.  At one time, I thought age was a limiting factor, but I'm in my mid-70s and they welcome me as a donor.

If it matters to you, there are almost always give-aways for donating.
(shirts, etc.  Currently, chance to win tickets to Disney on Ice or 2 nights at a Ritz-Carlson Resort.

But the biggest take-away is that you helped someone in need, giving something personal that can't be mass-manufactured or imported from some foreign country.

Please consider giving blood (this week preferably) at one of the Stanford Blood Centers (Menlo Park, Mountain View (near ECH), Dublin, (Campbell is closed for repairs)) or at a mobile donation drive.   If none of those are convenient, consider giving to the Red Cross.

I second this opinion. Stanford Blood Center is my favorite place to donate blood. The staff is wonderful from top to bottom. I wish I lived close enough to regularly donate. What I appreciate is that you get a free cholesterol reading with every donation.

The contrast between them and what we have in the Seattle area couldn't be more stark.

Below is the what I got at the 2-3 gallon level. Unfortunately, I can't seem to post the photo so it will remain a mystery, but it is really cool.

LOL. I've been giving via Red Cross for the last 20+ years (found out I was good at it, who knew?!). And I always go late in the day because of work, so I've always missed out on the tshirts or whatever (and I'm still peeved that I never got a Buddy the Blood Drop Bobblehead 20 years ago). But nothing beats the feeling of getting that email telling me what happened to my donation.

And BEAT THE DUCKS.

These days, all Pac 12 games are either marquee games or they are trap games.  Quite seriously, every team is a threat if we have an off day.  That is not how it used to be.

Truly!
Every name on the list my immediate reaction is "She was/is great!"
Very happy to see Cam on the list.
It's not just the talent and game stats, it's her grit, toughness, and passion brought to the game that is so impressive.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - WBB fan - 01-19-2024

Agree, so difficult to limit to 10, and I suspect many of us can think of other possible inclusions. For me, the one that might belong here in place of someone (but who!) is Sonja Henning -- a 1st team all American (1990-91 season) who still has the record for career assists (ahead of Azzi who is #2) and is #2 on the steals list (ahead of Azzi at #3). Those are career records that date back to Henning's graduation in 1991, so more than 30 years. She's faded in many people's memories, but to me, she's the best pg that Stanford has ever had.

But maybe this comment and the previous two really belong in the Tara in the Media thread. Just a thought.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - OCcardinal - 01-19-2024

This season, Cameron Brink has yet to foul out of any Pac 12 game, but has been called for 2 quick fouls every time, causing Tara to sit her. As a result, she has failed to play more than 8 first half minutes in any of the first five conference games:

Opponent First Half Min/2nd Half Min/Total Min (First Half Fouls/Total Fouls)
Cal 7/13/20 (2/4)
Washington State 8/20/28 (2/4)
Washington 7/19/26 (2/2)
Utah 7/20/27 (2/2)
Colorado 7/16/23 (2/4)
Average 7.2/17.6/24.8 (2/3.2)
Minutes per foul 1H: 3.6
Minutes per foul 2H: 14.7

I'm hoping this trend can end tonight and Cam gets no more than one first half foul and we see her play at least 10 first half minutes.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - WBB fan - 01-19-2024

Per ESPN listing, Stanford is now a 25.5 point favorite. Given Oregon's record, Stanford certainly should be favored, but maybe not by that much. There's no one in the Pac-12 that's a sure win. There's going to be so much emotion in this game, which could be a plus, or could be a minus, trying too hard, tense, etc. I'm counting on Tara's prep to overcome that.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oregon Friday 7pm - 81alum - 01-19-2024

Good student turnout tonight.  Ogden warming up.  Band back.  Many wbb alums present.  More expected sunday.

Nothing about recruiting. Re Ogden, she's coming along re health, but didn't sound as is she's fully ready. Bird was pretty vague on the subject. I didn't hear anything really revealing re the game. Did anyone else?

Didn't look good. She couldn't put much weight on it when she limped up. And we played like we didn't know what to do and they went on a 10 point run. Hopefully we calm down.
