Boston College loses head coach Hafley to NFL - needle - 01-31-2024

Stanford hosts Boston College in 2025. No game between them this year.

Once again, presumably there will be an exodus of players. No idea if Stanford might be willing or able to poach any talent.

Hafley taking on a defensive coordinator role in Green Bay. FWIW:

Quote: "He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football," a source told ESPN. "College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There's no time to coach football anymore.

"A lot of things that he went back to college for have disappeared."

Know nothing of the guy, but a really interesting and depressing quote regarding his feelings. . ..

I wouldn't be so quick to assume there will be an exodus of players from BC. Yes, the portal will reopen for them for 30 days but where will they go? Everyone else has already started classes. A few schools may allow a transfer at this stage if it's before the add/drop deadline but that's tricky.

Since there is another window of opportunity in April for players to transfer effective at the end of this academic year, why can’t players from BC enter the portal now and find a new home in the spring?

True, they'll be able to transfer in the spring along with players from every other school. My point was simply that it likely won't be a case of 20 players entering the portal the day after a head coach leaves like we saw at several other programs over the past few months. The BC players are likely stuck for the moment and will have to stay enrolled in classes at BC, go through winter conditioning, spring practices, etc.

Imagine setting up a pro league from scratch and coming up with what we have in college today:

- Coaches paid by the team, but athletes paid by the fans.
- No salary cap.
- You can only keep an athlete for 4 or 5 years and the athlete has the option to leave the team any year they want
- You have to recruit players to come play for your team while they are in high school, before you know how good they really are.
- If the athlete is as as good as you hope they'll probably leave for greener pastures and then you have to figure out how to poach a player from another team.

I can understand why a college coach would be attracted to the comparative stability of the NFL.

There is some chatter online about Chip Kelly having interest in the BC job.

Probably the underlying current is that Chip wants out of UCLA.

Here's a story about Kelly's supposed interest in an NFL coordinator position:

Tons of rumors tonight that former Penn State and Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is the guy at BC.

BOB was hired by Ohio State back in January to be their offensive coordinator after working this past fall as OC for the New England Patriots.

If it happens, I'm sure the BC fans will be pretty thrilled. BOB also worked for two years as offensive coordinator at Alabama under Saban.
