RIP Arthur P. Barnes - 82lsju - 02-07-2024

LSJUMB member and historian, Alex Jardetztky '80, reports the following sad news:

Quote:It is with a heavy heart that I am letting you know that the former Director of Bands at Stanford, Dr. Arthur P. Barnes passed away early Tuesday morning. His family sent out a brief notice to some former Stanford Band members who then forwarded it to a broader group.

RE: RIP Arthur P. Barnes - 81alum - 02-07-2024

He was such an integral part of Stanford and what the Stanford experience meant.  I took his class on symphonies in 1978 and acquired a life long love for classical music.  But I only took the class because I had heard about the Band Director and the LSJUMB, which of course had almost nothing to do with classical music!

The Band has not been the same since he retired. RIP. ..  .

This article from Stanford magazine when he retired is worth re-reading.

Thanks for that! So much I didn't know before. Barnes was quite a character himself!

Yes, that was a fascinating article.  I'd love to have heard the simultaneous playing of Rule Britannia and the Banner.  And "Go Queen!"  Indeed.

I didn’t know him all that well, but I enjoyed playing his musical arrangements for LSJUMB. His legacy is strong and his memory is a blessing.
