WBB: Stanford 81 ASU 67 - 81alum - 02-22-2024

Preview: Stanford vs. ASU, Sunday 12 pm, TV: Pac 12 Bay Area.

Sunday at 12pm Stanford hosts ASU.  This will be senior day, and definitely the last regular game at Maples for Hannah Jump, probably the last regular game at Maples for Cameron Brink, though she has indicated she is still deciding whether to come back.  Most probably we will host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, so hopefully we will see them again a couple more times.

On January 26 we beat ASU in Tempe 80-50.  We did it in the usual way, with Brink and Iriafen absolutely dominant, and playing a solid defense that limited ASU to 29% shooting in their home gym.  Since that game a month ago, ASU has beaten Cal and Washington but lost to Arizona, USC, UCLA, and WSU.  Massey has them at 85, and they are fighting with Washington and Oregon to stay out of last place in the Pac 12.

ASU has three serious offensive threats, and they will get points.  The key is to hold their shooting percentages down as we did last time, and not give them open looks.  For example, in ASU's last game--an ignominious 46-73 loss to WSU--ASU was 1-11 from three point range and shot less than 30% overall.  This is similar to our last game against ASU.  ASU has talented guards who can drive and make jump shots, but if we make them work hard for their shots our own offense should significantly out pace theirs.

Hoping for a strong turnout for senior night. Would be a bummer if Brink couldn’t participate. She didn’t practice all week. So even if she’s available, not sure how much she could contribute in the game itself.

Also, the board is back! Wasn’t sure there for a while if it was ever gonna come back.

I'm still in Costa Rica on the Osa Pennisula and couldn't get the game last night.  This morning I saw the score on ESPN and nearly vomited.

I guess we have to win the rest of our games to win the Pac-12 regular season?

Tough ending. Arizona banked in TWO three-pointers in their run to go ahead at the end. We were down 3 after the second one with very little time left, and couldn't score at all. The final score reflected playing the foul game unsuccessfully.

Let's get this thread back to the ASU game.  Pain and suffering associated with the Arizona game belongs on the Arizona thread, which I may not look at again.

The 7 TOs may be explained by her coming down with whatever Cam had. She looked unusually slow and flustered on Friday. For all her limitations, Lepolo has historically been super solid under full court pressure.

Glad Cam is suited. We need her fearlessness to shake off Friday's meekness vibes.

Talana is out with a knee injury, not season ending. She will be back next weekend. Been bothering her all season long. Just a game for her to get some rest I guess.
