MVB: Stanford defeats Pepperdine - Mick - 02-25-2024

Stanford men's volleyball team defeated Pepperdine yesterday, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23), marking Will Rottman's somewhat successful return from a lower leg injury. Rottman sat out the first match, then played in the next three, hitting .192. His younger and rapidly improving brother Alex let the pin hitters with a .321 average, and oppo Theo Snoey led the team with 13 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Very sloppy match. Stanford had 41 errors (including an uncharacteristic 7 blocking errors), and Pepperdine had 50 errors overall.

Undefeated Grand Canyon (13-0) is next at Phoenix. They beat #6 BYU 3-0, 3-0, and beat #10 USC 3-0, 3-1. They've lost four sets in 13 matches. Matches are Friday, 3/1 at 6 p.m., and Sunday 3/3 at 12 noon (presumably to catch the afternoon flight back to the Bay Area). Their star is Camden Gianni, CIF player of the year as a senior. 3.8 GPA. Also considered UCLA, Concordia, Northridge, Lewis and Pepperdine. MPSF frosh of the year in 2020, plays on the U.S. Pan American team. Their setter was an All-Academic team selection, and first-team All-CIF. GCU had five All-American players last year (one second team and four honorable mentions). They have an excellent coaching staff.
