ACC Basketball - old spanish trail - 03-15-2024
I was flipping through channels a couple hours ago and NC State vs. Tony Bennett's Virginia team were beginning the second half of their semi game in the ACC tournament. First thing on the screen is Michael O'Connell playing PG for NCS. I was never a big fan of OConnell because he seemed slow footed on D and not a difference maker on O. He's actually better, much lighter on his feet, and he was guarding one of Va's shooters. The game was close until late when Va pulled ahead by 6 or 7. Then a missed shot and missed free throws gave the ball to NCS with 5 secs. OConnell raced down the floor and put up a 30 footer with a hand in his face. It banked in to tie at the buzzer. In OT, again game was close till NCS went ahead in the last minute. OConnell made a couple 2 pointers I think.
So, tomorrow is the ACC final with NC vs NCS, or Cormac Ryan and Harrison Ingram vs Michael OConnell.

Such a bizarre confluence of events. Three former players for Haase starring in the ACC, just as Haase gets fired and Stanford looks forward to joining the ACC next year. Can't call it ironic, just wacky.

Wolfpack improbably survive and advance, with MOC playing a steady role in the victory over UNC. He's a guy that clearly the coaches trust/want to be on the floor in crunch time, although to my eyes he made a couple of bad decisions leading to turnovers.
MOC had 10 points in 36 minutes, with two assists and three turnovers.

NC State becomes the 1st team to win the ACC tournament by winning 5 games in 5 days.
No easy task.

Isa Silva and LBSU defeat UC Davis and they are off to the dance as Big West Champs. Silva played 5 minutes and was 0-1 in the championship game. LBSU fired long time head coach Dan Monson last week. Neal Begovich as a walk on at Duke makes the dance.
