Per ESPN sources.
Edited to add: apparently
wikipedia is very confident in ESPN's sources, or someone who manages his page knows the official word...:
Quote:Kyle Andrew Smith (born June 15, 1969) is an American college basketball coach who is the men's head coach for the Stanford Cardinal of the Pac-12 Conference.

Outstanding hire. My first choice by far. Great job at USF then better at Washington State

Smith's first job: convince Raynaud, Stojakovich, and Carlyle to come back.

Would much rather have Myles Rice than Stojakovic, and I bet it’s probably more likely.
Very nice hire. I’ve posted much more elsewhere and can’t copy and paste at the moment but in a nutshell this is our most accomplished basketball hire in over 40 years and he has a stellar track record of getting good results at some of the hardest programs to succeed at. There is some legitimate question how high his ceiling is but we can be more confident we have a good coach than we practically ever are in football and basketball. Today is a great day for Stanford sports.

My first choice, too. He is exactly what is needed at this time.

Monty hired 1986. So best hire in almost 40 years Matt lol
Giants. Phogge’s first choice also

I am smiling at the news of this hire. Lots of challenges ahead for Stanford sports, but I believe this can be a turning point for men's basketball.

Love the hire. He's won everywhere he's been, but he didn't get a championship in the WCC or the P12. Now we've got many consecutive years ahead of not making the tourney. How long will the honeymoon period last until the posts come in calling for his head? :>

Really great hire, about the best that Stanford could realistically hope for. I wanted Randy Bennett and Coach Smith is the next best thing, he was Randy's assistant for a decade. Did a great job at Columbia, an outstanding job at USF and killed it at WSU where he kept improving over time. Maybe the smartest man in college basketball, according to URichmond's head coach Mooney.
As a player, he shot 51.3% from long range. His style is "Nerdball", given his dependence on analytics. He coached an Ivy -- successfully. Has a master's in educational leadership.
Hopefully he can stave off transfer portal issues, and perhaps even benefit. Maybe Stanford will give him a 1-2 year free pass on marginal recruits to shore up a decimated program. Stanford BB is a tough nut to crack. Takes a very unique kind of coach, and I think he's the one. Nice going, Bernard. Your job is safe for one more year... ;)

I share everyone else’s sentiment. Great hire! Go Stanford!
How much are we paying him? It must be a significant amount.

Yeah this is frankly better news than I expected. About the best case outcome.

Not necessarily. Smith was only making $1.4 million (lowest in the PAC-12) and that was before the Wazzu athletic dept. pay cuts. The football coaching staff took a 10% pay cut last month and I wouldn't be surprised at something similar for basketball. It's a sad state of affairs but Wazzu coaches are fleeing left and right to get off the sinking ship. The volleyball coach left in December to take over a terrible WVU program after guiding the Cougs to the Sweet 16 and the baseball coach left in June to take over at Wichita State. For all intents and purposes, Wazzu is a Mountain West program right now.

I was going to link Wilner's "Stanford finally gets it right" column, but decided this would be a lot more fun. It's from his "march madness winners and losers" column...
Winner: @YaleMBB. After Yale upset Auburn in the first round, the aforementioned Twitter/X account was inundated with kudos and well wishes. In response, the account posted the following statement: “Our notifications are blowing up with basketball tweets, but we are the Yale molecular biophysics and biochemistry account! You might want to tag @YaleMBasketball instead.”

Yes, great day. Like others, my first choice.

Was just running an errand and had the door held for me by a guy who saw my hat and then grumbled "You just stole our coach."
We had a good laugh.
