2024 Niners -
Mick - 05-18-2024
DraftKings lists just one NFL team as a preseason favorite in all 17 regular season games in 2024.
49ers schedule: SF favored in all 17 games per opening point spreads
Last year, the 49ers had a -20 rest differential, meaning their opponents had a collective 20 more rest days before their games than the 49ers did. It was the league's worst and the sixth worst since 2002.
And the 2024 rest differential will be...even worse, at
-22 days, again, the worst in the league and the third worst since 2002. The two teams that had a worse differential were the 2012 Eagles and the 2017 Giants, who finished 4-12 and 3-13 respectively.
49ers’ rest differential is one of NFL’s worst since 2002 (usatoday.com)

Really hope Tufanga can come back. The downward spiral of the 49ers' defense happened when he was hurt. Current progress looks promising. If he returns, the Niners will be overloaded at safety:

I hope he fully recovers as well. But he’s a bit of a mixed bag, imo. Strong against the run. Smart. Hard hitter. But he’s comparatively slow. Coupling him with a safety with better speed than we’ve seen with Gipson is , imo, important.

Random Super Bowl thought:
The Chiefs had the most offensive holding penalties called in the NFL last year and fifth most in both 2022 and 2021:

Kinda like the Stanley Cup playoffs, refs are instructed to swallow their whistles unless they see some egregious.

And here I thought an OL tackling a DL to the ground was egregious. Silly me.

Only if the OLer takes his helmet off and clocks the DLer.

Former NFL/Notre Shame LB and imaginary Stanford chick magnet Manti T'eo claims that the 49ers are emotionally drained (from football, not fake girlfriends) and will not win the NFL West division this year.
Te'o claims 'emotionally drained' 49ers aren't NFC West favorites

Great writing: "
The 49ers have won the NFC West in three out of the last five NFL seasons, but Manti Te'o predicts there will be a new division champion in 2024."
Well there was a different NFC West champion 2 of the last 5 seasons, right?
Emotionally drained? Is that why he failed as a pro?

The McCaffreyless Niners looked pretty good tonight. A good bit to fix, but an impressive performance. Trent looks overweight. BA looked rusty, dropping a great TD pass. Purdy looked sharp, for the most part. The OL better than expected. The D looked really solid. Mason looked amazing. Looking forward to the season. . . .

Agreed with all you say...Niners scored on eight consecutive possessions, Moody went six for six (hit the upright got a lucky bounce)
Jordan Mason is a LOT of fun to watch. Can't wait to have McCaffrey back, but Mason can really run.
Deebo looks slight to me, he's lost a lot of weight to be carrying the ball that much. Jauan Jennings was the leading receiver, he looked very sharp.
Purdy, just okay. 89.9 rating, #17 in NFL.

Purdy had a couple of drops, one in the end zone; threw the ball away a few times, as well. Looked good to me. Nothing stupid, even with a lot of pressure early.
D looked really solid and fun to watch.

Yeah, watching Gibbs and Mason over the past two days and knowing they were once in the same college backfield, only to max out at 3 wins a year....

Has Ronnie Bell ever made an important catch? I suspect he has dropped more passes than caught, and was surprised they kept him on the roster. Also, my lack of faith in Moody is even huuuuger . We should have passed, picked up one of these no name guys who would have done as well, and waited for Karty.

To me, it looks like the DBs are a major weak link. Certainly not Super Bowl caliber.

yes, i believe ronnie bell made an important catch or 2 last year. but that doesn't make up for him dropping 3/4 of the passes thrown right into his hands.
i winced whenever i saw #10 on the field.
in the last drive i was saying, half to the tv half to my wife, "please don't throw to ronnie bell, please don't throw to ronnie bell, please..."
if aiyuk, jennings, and saubert are covered, throw to conley, throw to cowing. just don't throw to bell.
presumably, that problem disappears when pearsall gets off ir.

Absolutely brutal loss. Wasted a masterclass from Purdy and Jenkins.
Aiyuk is invisible.
Bell is a joke.
DBs gave up big play after big play against a team without its top 2 WR.
OL couldn't get a consistent push. DL struggled against the run.
Shanahan didn't seem to recognize this wasn't a day we could reliably get 1-2 yards on the ground, should have called Purdys number more on third and short.
All that said it's early and most of our stars are hurt or rusty from missing camp. If we can get to 4-4 or 5-5 I could see us being a dangerous team if we get healthier and find a rhythm, like 2021. With expansion of the playoff to 7 and only 1 bye its all about getting into the playoffs and peaking at the right time.

Since Shanahan arrived in 2017, this is his fifth loss when the Niners have been up by 10 or more points in the fourth quarter. Only Jim Harbaugh/Ravens have more in that time frame, with six.

Six dropped passes didn't help. I have no idea why Bell is on this team. The missed FG, albeit at great distance, didn't help. Missing Kittle, Deebo and McCaffrey and Trent and Aiyuk still rounding into football shape didn't help. BTW, Trent's always been a big guy, but he looks 20 pounds heavier around the middle than he did last year.
