Big 12 is for sale…. -

The Big 12 is looking at selling the Conference’s naming rights for a reported nine figures. Allstate is considered the front runner for the sponsorship. The new name, if the deal is consummated? The Allstate 12 Conference.
Also, conference leadership is discussing a potential investment in the range of $800 million to $1 billion from an investment group in exchange for a 15-20% stake in the conference.
It is all about closing the revenue gap between the SEC/Big Ten and the Big 12.
I wonder what the ACC has in mind to keep up with their competitors?
Interesting side note: A number of years ago, Larry Scott made a proposal re: working with an investment group to buy a stake in the PAC-12 but the conference Presidents/Chancellors nixed the idea. What could have been………

I actually think selling conference naming rights is pretty brilliant. Any semblance of tradition has gone by the wayside for the former Big 8, so might as well make a few (million) bucks.
Do not agree, however, that bringing in private equity is a good idea. One way or another, PE pulls out all the stops to get its investment back. If you could rely on ever growing football revenues, maybe. But that is not where we are. Don’t ever want a scenario where PE is forcing the hand of college presidents and ADs trying to support the non-revenue sports.

What Larry was, in fact, doing was having a going-out-of-business sale. But he was too oblivious to realize it. What a wanker!

If the sports programs are sold off to private equity, would that make the athletic facilities taxable? Could get expensive.
