Quote:[Stanford’s Brody] Malone … finished second on the first of two days of competition …, trailing Fred Richard by half a point. …;
… leaders of the Cardinal team … Hong [placed] fifth and Young a distant 12th at the midway point.
Two other members of Stanford’s 2024 NCAA championship team, Colt Walker and Jeremy Bischoff, ended 10th and 11th, respectively, while Cardinal alum Curran Phillips took the top spot on his primary apparatus, parallel bars, which could keep him in contention for the team.

and Khoi Young is a "traveling alternate". I attended today, and really enjoyed it. Several of our guys--including Malone--fell on the high bar, and Hong slipped badly off the pommel horse. Also Malone's floor routine ended on a very vanilla note. High points included Hong absolutely nailing the rings, and Malone nailing the parallel bars. I also really liked Young's floor routing.

Very excited for Asher Hong and Brody Malone, and happy/crushed for Khoi Young that he's an alternate. The mathematical selection criteria was established beforehand, so there was little wiggle room for human discretion, but just to share:
--On the starting Olympic team, they took Stephen Nedoroscik, who can be one of the top pommel horse men in the world. However, he ONLY does pommel horse.
--Left as an alternate is Khoi Young, who is the reigning World silver medalist on pommel horse and vault. Unfortunately, Khoi had a tough first day of Olympic trials which hurt him in the selection process.
Having a one-event specialist on your team is risky given the ever-present possibility of injury (and Malone destroyed his knee only a year ago). If there are 2 last-minute injuries on the team (you compete 3 of your 5 Olympians on each event), it's gonna be rough.
