152nd British Open -
Mick - 07-18-2024
Maverick McNealy is T20, even after the first round, three behind Justin Thomas (Shane Lowry is -4 after 11 holes). Lots of golf left to play.
Tiger is +7. Maybe Colin Montgomerie was right.

Rough day for both Mav and Tiger.
Tiger is +14, T146, and out of it.
McNealy is +5, now T57 and right at the projected cut line. Might make the cut, the first 70 plus ties make the cut at The Open.
If this keeps up, a lot of big names will miss the cut, including Fleetwood, McIlroy, Aberg, Fowler, Clarke, DeChambeau, Finau, Homa, Stenson, Hovland, Molinari, Cink, Svensson, Zalatoris, Leonard, Els, Daly...and Woods.

Mav posted 1 over snowman on Friday so he ended up with the weekend off.
it was fun to watch the players in the weather Saturday. Scheffler's 3-wood on 17 reminded me of Nicklaus' 1-iron from 17's back tee box at Pebble (and too bad that box has largely been retired). pretty amazing shot given the circumstances.
X's play on Sunday was pretty amazing. good to see him win. Rose's caddie comments on X are worth the read.

Funny you should mention Scheffler's 3 wood and Nicklaus' 1 iron on 17 (see Nicklaus's thoughts on the video below). First professional golf shot I ever saw was Bernard Langer hitting into the wind on 17 at Pebble. He hit it pin high, left side of the green and my jaw just dropped. Had I hit it, it would have been the shot of my life. Langer just shook his head in disappointment.
Schauffele's really come into his own the last year. 12 Top 10s, two wins, both majors, 2nd in FedEx point standings. And nine career wins.

And he enters the Olympic tournament as the defending gold medalist.

nice find Mick. for some reason, I didn't Nicklaus had the honors on 17 and the previous hit a good shot on the green. almost a "top that" look followed, then Nicklaus hit it in the leather. probably bad memory on my part.
on Nicklaus' shot and as one of my old teammates would say, it "landed like a butterfly with sore feet."
agreed on Schauffele. he and Scheffler might be our next duel in the sun.
