Also The Stride Report is ranking teams. I’ll Post their thoughts
My guesses on the women’s team:
In order:
Amy Bunnage
Sophia Kennedy
Zofia Dudek
Irene Riggs
Riley Stewart
5 score these should be 6-8
Audrey Suarez
Ava Parekh
Nicola Hogg
Ashlyn Boothby is our only Frosh. She could well break through
Riggs missed last season with injuries. If fully recoverd she will be a force Riggs was a top top recruit
Men tomorrow
RE: Stanford Cross Country 2024 -
BobK - 08-16-2024
My guesses on the Men:
Cole Sprout
Lex Young
Leo Young
Thomas Boyden
Then the four outstanding Frosh
Paul Bergeron
James Dargan
Bryon Grevious
Patrick Koon
A very young team but so most talent

The stride report predicted Stanford Men at 17th. They did write they predicted 4th last season when Stanford finished 17th

The stride report has the women at 14. Big reason is Riggs out last season

Hi Bobk, a question and a note:
Dudek has eligibility this year since her fall 2020 season didn't count due to COVID, right?
We have a 2025 commit--Maya DeBrouwer from La Canada High School (the same high school that produced all american fencer Irene Yeu, incoming men's golfer Logan Kim and some golfer who went to Cal named Colin Morikawa). She finished 4th in the Footlocker western region and 24th in the Footlocker Nationals last fall. 10:09.23 3200 meters. She has been accepted and Stanford is her dream school.

Dudek has missed seasons for XC indoor and outdoor. She’s on the track roster also.
Thank you on Maya she’s on my list. 3 commits so far

Nice to see the women get off to a good start for the season as they win comfortably with 18 points.
Sophia Kennedy wins the race, with solid performances from Dudek (2nd), Stewart (3rd), Flynn and Saurez. No sign of Amy Bunnage or Irene Riggs - so more to come on what this team looks like.
The men finished 5th overall, and ran in a pack about 45 seconds behind the leaders - seems like they were resting some of our usual suspects and using this as a training run more than anything - but I don't know how to read into that result.

Per NCAA rules, XC teams can't start pre-season practice until 16 days before their first meet (and first meet can't be before essentially Labor Day weekend). So Stanford XC gets together on campus in late August, "races" this meet every year and then heads off to training camp. Going to Boulder area for 2 weeks this year.
In other words, yes, this was a group workout with zero regard for results, at least for the men. Sprout and Boyden were held out and did their own workout, and the guys who "raced" did an additional fartlek workout on the Polo Field track immediately after the race.
JJ must feel a little differently on the women's side as they tend to take it more seriously, but the reason for participating is the same.

At the meet today in Columbia Missouri the Stanford Men were easy winners beating mostly SEC teams Stanford runners went 2-3-5 at the top
The Stanford Women also won. Dudek 2nd Kennedy 3nd

The Stanford Women finished 11th very close to 8th. With 5-6 teams ranked above them in the race and without Bunnage and Riggs petty descent
With 5-6 teams ranked ahead of them the Men finished an awesome 3rd

Without Riggs? To my knowledge, Riggs hasn't raced since she arrived at Stanford more than a year ago. I know she had a serious hip injury and I haven't seen nor heard anything that makes me think she'll be back this season, let alone be fast enough to contribute to team scoring. So I don't think we can qualify "without Riggs". But, yes, Bunnage will be a big addition when she starts racing again. I'm assuming JJ is taking things slowly with her given her late return to the Farm.
Yes, good race for the men. Especially given that Leo had, for him, an off day. Maybe he's under the weather as he shouldn't be that far behind Lex, Cole and Thomas even halfway through the race. I also keep expecting more from DiDonato, but I'm afraid that's what Rob seems to be giving us these days.

Impressive third place by the men, with Arkansas winning and Iowa State in second.
The team:
9 - Sprout
20 - Lex Young
22 - Boyden
43 - Leo Young
48 - Bergeron -- faster than the #5 runner for either Arkansas or Iowa State
**********
53 - DiDonato
69 - Koon
122 - Dargan

Actually by mentioning Riggs I was hoping someone knew something about her. I may hear something today

Sure, let us know if you hear something. I'm more plugged into the men's team than the women's, but all I know is that (a) Irene hasn't raced in 16 months and not once at Stanford, (b) she had a a serious hip injury, and © she hasn't been spotted running or even mentioned on the many social media outlets related to Stanford XC (personally or team; workouts or races). I think it's pretty safe to assume that she's not racing this season, nor wouldn't have the fitness to do so even if healthy.
I hear good things about the men's team coming together as a "team." Team-building is not Ricardo's strength as a coach, but the guys have taken it on themselves. It means something to have team cohesion -- in workouts, races, culture, social life -- rather than a bunch of individuals getting their work in and putting on the uniform for races, which is what recent years have been like. This group is different and is gelling.
It also helps that Ricardo seems to have realized some of his coaching mistakes and is working to rectify him. Crushing 10 mile dead-flat tempos on hard-packed dirt in perfect conditions at Baylands only goes so far in prepping a team for Nats on tough, hilly courses on grass in bad weather. The difference in training this season is striking.

Started thinking about ACC Champs next week. I can't say enough how ridiculous it is that (a) the team has to fly to North Carolina (but that's obviously the reality of being in the ACC...I blame Muir's incompetence), BUT (b) the men's race starts at 9:30am eastern time! It's a competitive disadvantage to fly across the country and then have to race at 6:30am on their body clocks. It will be November and weather will be plenty fine: hey ACC, how about a noon eastern start??!! I don't care who you are, getting up at 4am and racing at 6:30am, especially as a college student but true generally and certainly for me as a post-collegiate runner, is really, really difficult. Sleep will be poor, legs tired, etc etc. F the ACC!

The Stanford Men just finished second at the ACC meet.
Women running now
The Stanford Women finished 3rd. I was thinking 5th would be very good
Edit. Now the Women are 2nd barely out of first.
Something changed upon review

Stanford twitter claiming that the women finished in second - and Carolina twitter claiming that they got third for the women.
Nonetheless, a very good result for the women compared to expectations coming in.
