The elephant in the room.... - Row80Critic - 09-08-2024

Is Elijah Brown.  9 for 9, 97 yards, 1 TD, no INTs.  He found the open receivers (quickly) and put the ball right in the receivers hands pass after pass...

I'll just offer up two things to consider:

1.  Was that CP's 1st string D at that point?

2.  How much did he benefit from our OL improving during the course of the game?

And, he held his poise even after suffering a targeting hit.

I would like to see Brown and Daniels on the field at the same time.  Daniels can run very well, pass pretty well, and probably catch the ball.  Brown can pick apart defenses with his precision passing.  TT could get real creative with his play designs with both those guys on the field.

Here is one potential play:  Split Daniels wide to the sideline along with Elic.  On the same side put Roush off the line.  Brown under center takes a two step drop and fires a backward pass to Daniels.  Daniels has three options: 1) pass to Elic over the top on a post or corner route; 2) pass to Roush running a shallow out pattern; 3) run the ball. This is one example of how we can overcome ineffective pass blocking.

It is indeed gratifying to see him (and his teammates) execute his "package" so well. However, we shouldn't over-interpret the results. The CPSLO team Brown faced was not playing with the same enthusiasm and effort they were able to muster in the first half. They were a spent force by the time Brown got out there. That said, he clearly brings skills that Daniels does not. In the "right" situation he showed signs of excellence. TT put him in that appropriate situation and Brown had success.

IMO Daniels is QB1 because he is a better runner than Brown and a better passer than Lamson. He is not "elite" in any of these skills, but brings a viable package. In particular he has the ability to scramble. With our OL that is a necessity. He also does "OK" on designed runs at least occasionally. Can Brown do that? I don't know, but from what I hear he can, to some degree. He is not as good at it as Daniels, from what I hear. Of course, that could be BS (in either direction).

IMO we just have to trust that TT sees all three QBs in practice and can chose who needs to play most of the snaps. It is often difficult to determine in practice how a QB will react to the various forms of pressure, both mental and physical. They have to go out and play "when it matters". Brown hasn't done that yet. Maybe he will "soon".

FWIW Daniels seemed to go through his progressions in this game much better than in the previous one. However, he did go after his first read in several situations where there were IMO better options.

Good on Taylor, putting in Brown when he had a very good chance to succeed. Good on Brown for succeeding. Taylor should gradually put him in more difficult situations. Look to next season rather than pushing the guy to fast. Given the schedule, there will be many, many difficult spots.

In the two games in which Mater Dei faced comparable competition in Brown's senior season, Brown looked average at best.

It was nice to see him have a successful debut, but I wouldn't read too much into it.

I will say that he's not very mobile, in HS he seemed to lack pocket presence, and does not have Daniels' improvisational ability.

limited action last night, but Brown looked to have much better pocket presence than Daniels and went through his progressions much quicker as well.

brown impressed me with his ability to anticipate where the receiver would be and throw before the receiver broke open. quite visible on the touchdown pass.

Frankly, given the New World Order of big time college FB, it is a shocker to me that a disheveled program such as Stanford has been for years was/is able to attract a player with the bona-fides of a kid such as Brown. This is not 2007-08, this is not Andrew Luck (or the rest of Jim Harbaugh's roster) and this sure as schidt is not Bob Bowlsby, yada-yada-yada. It's just gonna be another season or three of trial and tribulation as we slog our way back to relevance. Best wishes to coach and Brown, et. al.  Hit the weight room hard and stay healthy, guys.

Assuming relevance is attainable again.
