What Could Have Been -

So I was in a waiting room a few weeks ago. There was an elderly African American man in the waiting room with me. He was wearing a beautiful cap with the logos of all of the HBCUs. It was a beautiful cap.
I complimented him on the hat and asked him if he had attended an HBCU. He said "No, but I like to support the schools." I asked if he had kids that attended an HBCU. He said, "No. My son went to USC."
I asked if he played any sport at USC. He said, "Yes, he played football." I said, "Wow, that's impressive. I went to Stanford and have hated USC for 50 years."
He said, "Well, my son is in the Hall of Fame." I assumed that he meant the USC Hall of Fame. I asked, "Who is your son." He replied, "Lynn Swann. I thought he was going to commit to Stanford. They were up here at least once a week" Swann played for Serra in San Mateo.
What could have been: Lynn Swan, then Tony Hill, then James Lofton.

He was recruited by Stanford and Cal...and felt more comfortable at USC.

Our 1977 team with Benjamin, Lofton and Nelson had some of out best offensive talent we have ever had. Benjamin won the best college passer award, Lofton was a second team all american and Nelson introduced himself to the college game, ran for over 1,000 yards and caught 50 passes. If we had a few more guys besides Gordy Ceresino on defense, that might have been one of the best teams we ever fielded.-

On the topic of chance encounters, this is less entertaining but I didn't have a good place to post it until this thread.
I recently was at lunch next to a table where a former college QB was talking about his recruiting experiences. He looked to be early-mid 20s, but I don't follow recruiting well enough to have recognized him. Was talking with his table about visits to Bama under Saban and ND under Kelly, but he also had some words about his Stanford visit, which pretty much hewed to the stereotypes- the stadium was empty, the tailgates were all fancy wine and cheese, the students didn't care.
None of this was surprising of course but it was interesting to hear still. Clearly some recruits care about the big time college football experience and we probably lose those guys.

Nice articles. Swann's HS coach was Jesse Freitas Sr. Jesse Freitas Jr was the Serra QB a year ahead of Swann in HS and was briefly at Stanford during the Plunkett/Bunce years, transferring to San Diego St.

Willie! Swann's dad was a really friendly guy whom my dad knew for years. He was a janitor for a long time at my dad's company in San Mateo.

Another recruiting story. I bought several cars from a dealership on the the Peninsula because I was loyal to one salesperson. He treated me well and I bought cars from him. Good relationship.
His son was a 4 star linebacker who committed to UCLA, if I remember correctly. He said that the family had several in-home visits from prominent football coaches. When the coaches were asked if they wanted something to drink, most of them said, "Water is fine or a soft drink." Most did not smoke, but if they did, they asked first if it was OK.
Jack Elway visited. Before anybody could ask, he asked for a Vodka Tonic and lit up a Pall Mall.
Mom was not impressed.

Remember that he got a DUI on campus, a charge that was later dropped.
Elway Cleared of DUI

I wonder if that would happen in this day and age...
