FB -- Other Games Week 7 - martyup - 10-12-2024

Alabama is in a dog fight with South Carolina.  6 minutes to play and Bama leads by 1.

[Image: ?u=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia1.tenor.com%2Fimag...ipo=images]

UW is getting curb stomped by Iowa 30-10 early in the 4th.  I hope all that B1G money is worth it dawgs.

RE: FB -- Other Games Week 7 - martyup - 10-12-2024

Last night Troy Taylor's former running back at Sac State ran all over UT, leading AZST to victory.  His name is Cameron Skattebo.  I remember him when Sac State were in the playoffs in Taylor's last season there.  I sure wish he had followed Taylor to Stanford.

Weenies are getting beat by Pitt.

RE: FB -- Other Games Week 7 - Sam Leopold - 10-12-2024

Penn State-USC goes to OT.  USC goes 3 yards backwards, misses the FG and comes up empty.  Penn State hits the FG on their end and cracks the homefield advantage that had been rock-solid between the West Coast teams and the Big Ten "mainland" in conference play.

Also in Big Ten play, a top-25 Illinois was at home playing a Purdue team that might be worse than Stanford, and needed to stop a two-point conversion to win in overtime, 50-49.

Was Skattebo the secret to Taylor's success?

UW, USC, Oregon and UCLA are all going to be at best solid, but not contenders (see Oregon), and at worst one of the worst teams in the conference (UCLA) with a lot of mediocrity (UW and SC) in the middle.

Considering his breakout season was Taylor's last season there, I'm gonna go with no.

I don't think you can say that about OR now that they beat tOSU.

RE: FB -- Other Games Week 7 - Sam Leopold - 10-12-2024

Epic win for Oregon over tOSU, but unfortunately marred by one of the Oregon WR's spitting in a dude's face, for which he got DQ'ed.

Ducks' Traeshon Holden tossed for spitting at Buckeyes' Davison Igbinosun - ESPN

RE: FB -- Other Games Week 7 - newguy - 10-12-2024

it's gratifying for me that the Toejams and Weenies both lost.  reminds me that other teams have bad days too.

The only reason OR (likely) won the game was tOSU QB pulled a reverse Chris Webber and forgot to get down before the time ran out, even though Ohio State was already in field goal range.

Credit to Oregon for winning, but if that game was in Columbus, I highly doubt Oregon would have won.

Oregon is a solid team, but they remind me of the 2014 Florida State team (who ironically got smashed by Oregon in the CFP semifinals) who keep escaping with wins (Oregon barely beat Idaho and Boise already at home besides for tonight's contest).

I also, while making references to this season so far for UW, UO, USC and UCLA, was indicating how I expect them to do generally across multiple seasons in the Big 10. Oregon is starting a sixth year senior QB transfer, and the Ducks have literally not developed a QB since Justin Herbert. Maybe Oregon continues to get results from transfer QBs, but the alternative is Florida State and DJ Uiagalelei when the transfer doesn't work out (or maybe even Justin Lamson starting for us :) ).

Wilcox got himself in a hole by going for two on their first TD and failing, then being forced to go for two on their second TD and also failing.  That created the two-point gap vs. Pitt; then Cal's kicker came up short in the 4th quarter.  17-15 Pitt.  Cal looks decent, but they have had issues closing.

I root for whoever is playing the Trojans because of USC's role in torpedoing the Pac-12.  It is gratifying to see them at 1-3 in the conference which their greed compelled them to join.  But to be truthful, Penn State won in OT with some significant help from the refs, who failed to call two PI penalties during USC's offensive series.  Those were blatant missed calls; and the outcome might have been quite different if even one of them had been flagged.  Good to see USC lose, but it's bad for the sport when that kind of officiating ineptitude occurs.

The way things are going these days, I think of it more in terms of being bad for business, especially in this case...

I suspect that will be an ongoing issue for former Pac-12 teams...

thanks for posting. fun to review that last tosu series. imo last-second failure seems more on coach ryan day. tosu had 1st and ten on the oregon 28 down by 1 with 34 seconds left. don't you run the ball  up the middle 3x (or til oregon runs out of time outs) then kick a field goal? instead day calls 3 pass plays, loses 10 yards on offensive pass interference, and  tasks the tosu qb with an impossible play with 6 seconds left.

And, Oregon kinda screwed themselves earlier in the game by going for 2 after a TD and also by not kicking a FG on 4th down on the 3 yard line. Those 4 points would have forced tOSU to score a TD at the end of the game to win it.

Lanning took some heat last year when he went for it on 4th and goal against Washington and failed. As I recall a field goal might have made a difference in the game.
Guess that didn't change his philosophy.

I was intrigued with the 12 men on the field penalty.  Considering OSU’s field position, the lost time on the play (4 seconds) was far more consequential that the five yards they gained.  It is unfortunate the Buckeyes were not given the option of putting the four seconds back on the clock or taking the five yards.  Given that choice, they certainly would have taken the time and, who knows, maybe the outcome would have been different.  As it was, their situation rated somewhere between extremely dire and hopeless.

UPDATE: Well, as it turns out, the 12 men on the field penalty was intentional. UO Head Coach Lanning put 12 men on D knowing the benefit outweighed the five yards OSU would gain.

I suspect we might see a rule change next year to prevent this from happening again.

Penn State’s coach did not like his players showboating after their win over $C.

Couple that with the Kal coach going for two on their first two touchdowns and we see a pattern of stupidity. Kal undoubtedly did lose the game (or at least didn't go into OT) because of those missing two points. How is this "good" coaching? These are self-inflicted wounds. In both cases there was no pressing need to take the added risk of going for two. Both teams had competent kickers that were almost a lock to get the one point conversion.

As outlined above Oregon should have by all rights lost the game because tOSU could have kicked the makeable field goal but did not. Yes, three conservative running plays could have led to a fumble. It has happened before in Autzen :-). At least in this case there was a need to take time off the clock and a few more yards would have made the kick easier. Throwing the ball at a minimum risks stopping the clock.  Of course Oregon choosing in the third quarter to go for it on fourth down rather than kick the FG created the opportunity. That choice is at least defensible based on the idea Oregon may have needed every possible TD to win. Still a "reach" IMO. OTOH tOSU knew all they needed was the FG.

just noticed that chip kelly is the tosu offensive coordinator - and presumably the guy who called those plays at the end.
