MBB - Season opener vs Denver -

MBB gets their season underway today vs Denver at 1 pm, with coverage on ACCNX.
Here's some promotional words from our Ath Dept, which I've copied here since is more optimistic and without the snarky sarcasm I'd be tempted to add:
=============================================================
Kyle Smith era begins against Denver
A new-look Stanford will tip off in 2024-25 under the leadership of Kyle Smith, who joined the Cardinal after five successful seasons at Washington State
THE STARTING FIVE
• Stanford’s roster holds an exciting mix of returning players, transfers and freshmen, led by All-Pac-12 standout, and one of the top centers in the country,
Maxime Raynaud.
• The Pac-12 Most Improved Player last season, Raynaud led the Cardinal with averages of 15.5 points and 9.6 rebounds, to go with 2.0 assists per game. He is one of two power conference returners to match those averages, along with Kansas’ All-American center Hunter Dickinson.
• The season marks the third in a row with a transfer for Stanford, as five experienced players joined the Cardinal:
Derin Saran (UC Irvine),
Oziyah Sellers (USC),
Cole Kastner (Virginia),
Chisom Okpara (Harvard) and
Jaylen Blakes (Duke).
============================================================
One quick observation I'm reminded about, in the midst of the big discussions on our football threads related to transfers, is interesting and notable to me that Coach Smith successfully lured in 5 transfers to the MBB program. Nearly 1/3 of the roster.

Any idea why we are playing a game at 1pm on a Monday?

Kastner is a walk-on so the number should be 4 - still notable, of course.

Down 7-5 early in game.
I hope this team has not inherited the Haasian Slow Start affliction.

I assume that Coach Smith is planning to restock for next season the same way. He has 0 committed recruits for 2025-26.

Stanford up 32-20 now, after (per the announcers) a 15-2 run.

It’s Denver, but Stanford is passing the eye test in the first half. Defensive intensity and ball pressure, collective rebounding efforts, and amount of movement on offense are refreshing :)

Totally agree. This is what Coach Smith known for. This and ball control. Which is happening.
Our assists are 2x our Turnovers. That was not a common Haasian stat.

Gealer is 4-6 from 3. Cardinal looking good.

It looks like at least 2/3 of the men's and women's NCAA teams are scheduled to play today. Since both MBB and WBB are playing at home, likely a coin flip.

Oziyah Sellers seems very athletic and is shooting well today.

Agree. Is refreshing to think we have the quickest guy on the court.
Impressive start for Coach Smith and the team.
They looked ready to play.
Much to like from this game, of course some things to work on, as the competition will get tougher.
In addition to positive comments already on this thread I especially liked how Raynaud was used in this game.
In the past sometimes it seemed like the play was to get him the ball... and that's it.
Now it is more like he is part of the play, not expected to be the whole play himself.
I think good someone else was leading scorer (Sellers with great debut for us).
Freed up Raynaud to be more dominant on the boards, which Coach said was gonna be a priority this season.
Good idea Coach. Good season start.

I don't love Stanford in the ACC, but I do love the ACC Network's commitment to put condensed games online:

I actually like the ACC MBB opponents more than the Pac-12 opponents. Duke, UNC, BC, Miami, Louisville, Va, ND, Ga Tech, Syr and our old friends west of Stanford.
I think this conference will help our national MBB recruiting (he said, naively...).

Lots to like. Guys played hard, did their best to chase down every lose ball, passed much better than any Haase team I remember seeing. Guys also seemed to know where their teammates were. I wanted to cry when we first drove into the middle with seemingly nothing good in prospect, only find our guy found a teammate with a good pass in traffic. We do have some players. Gealer is probably not going to enjoy watching those passes he made that got intercepted and turned into 2 points, but I am sure he will learn from watching the film a dozen or so times.
I also think this game showed why the Portal can be a real plus for a coach like Smith. If he can produce a winning record in a tough conference, kids will listen to him.

Kristers Skrinda, a 2025 4/5 from Latvia, committed ~a month ago...and you commented on the thread when it happened!

A promising start for the Kyle Smith era, and even Johnny Dawkins got in on the gravy boat tonight too:
