Men's soccer v. ND -

If you did not see this game, and have a chance to watch it without knowing the results, I recommend you check out the archives at ESPN+. Suffice to say, the most unbelievable last 5 minutes I've ever seen. I will therefore not spoil it for those who can see it de novo.
On the other hand, during the game Dylan Groeneveld went down with a very concerning injury right after halftime. The announcers mentioned that he was conscious and moving, so hoping the response with paramedics and immobilization was precautionary.

David Beckham did the same thing. Happened in his first pro game or first pro season or something like that.

Can someone please explain to me the free kick inside the box after the Schnebly’s yellow card for wasting time?

In theory time wasting by the goalie for holding the ball too long is an indirect free kick (13.3.1.1) at the spot of the foul. In practice it is never called or it’s just a card and play on if it’s a GK. I haven’t seen this call made with the ball in play at any level in 10+ years. I had to check the NCAA rules to see if that was still on the books.
The pk call is hilarious too - arms iinline with his body even if slightly extended.
The better answer is college soccer officiating is utter garbage. It has also been much, much, much worse on the west coast vs. the ACC games farther east.
Edit: there was warning just briefly earlier but on a dead ball. But that sequence is bizarre. Schnebly is starting his motion to kick as the call comes. On a first offense, that is really poor referee judgment..
I guess at least he called the ND penalty too.
In the men’s game, hail Mary’s like that don’t go in.

I'm a very casual soccer fan, but that has to be one of the most electric moments in all of Stanford sports history.

Just a reminder that earlier this year, the women's soccer team scored a go-ahead goal with 2 seconds left against Louisville.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUC5wUNXvQA
And on the flip side, we gave up the go-ahead goal against Cal with less than 10 seconds left
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFWEWsRslTk
Before this year, I would have said that I liked that the refs had discretion on how much injury time to allow, in order to make up for teams that were unduly delaying, but I have to say that "buzzer beater" goals are tremendously exciting, and knowing that the clock is down to the last few seconds can add a sense of urgency in getting that last second shot off.
By the way, because time had not expired on that last shot, Notre Dame had a Hail Mary of their own immediately afterwards. I'm of course delighted it didn't go in, but could you imagine if it had?

Yes, that has to be on the short list.
What else would be on the list of most electric moments in Stanford sports history? Maybe some of these --
-- Paul Carey's walk-off grand slam against LSU in the CWS in 1987.
-- Mark Madsen's steal and dunk against Rhode Island in the 1998 NCAA tournament.
-- The Pritchard to Bradford TD to beat USC in the biggest upset ever in 2007.
Other thoughts?

Electric in a different way, Christian McCaffrey's 75 yard touchdown catch on the first play of the Rose Bowl against Iowa.

BTW, the goal has now been named the "Miracle from midfield". I don't make the rules.

Great list, Terry - I'd maybe add Owen Marecic's 2 TDs - 1 yd run for an offensive TD, then 13 seconds later, a 20 yd defensive TD off an INT from his LB position - in our 37-10 spankfest of the Domers in 2010.
Otherwise, your 3 choices bring great memories
- LSU game: I, and a student intern (SU junior) were working late on projects in separate offices that evening. When PC put the ball away, we simultaneously screamed, ran out of our offices and bunny-hopped in the hallway like a couple of crazed school kids on Halloween sugar highs
- For the MBB win and the FB win over SC, I was still a carefree bachelor living near downtown PA, so drove to campus to greet both those team's buses. I'll never forget the dazed/glazed "WTH - shouldn't you all be studying or something?!?!?..." look on Pete Sauer's (RIP) face when he first got off the bus. Then, the atmosphere in front of Maples when the FB team got back from LA was just surreal and electric - I forget all the cumulative circumstances, but it'd been a tough couple of years with overall campus morale at a real low, until that night

Those are all fantastic memories. I will add a few more.
Tuan Van Le blocking Cal's chip shot FG on the last play of the game to preserve a tie in the 1988 Big Game.
Which was then eclipsed by John Hopkins nailing the game-winner at Berkeley two years later.
I also continue to be awed (as a golf fan) by Mariah Stackhouse's being 2 down with to 2 to play in the last match of the 2015 NC vs. Baylor and erasing that deficit by going birdie-birdie on 17 and 18, then winning the match and the NC on the first extra hole. Just incredible to perform at that level with the entire season (and as a senior, Stackhouse's final match as a Cardinal) on the line.
Kiki Pickett's PK which clinched the NC for Stanford women's soccer in 2019 over the much-hated Tar Heels.
Shane Griffith improbably winning the wrestling national championship at 165 lbs in 2021 even as Stanford Athletics had announced 8 months prior that the wrestling program would be cut after the season. Everyone in the arena was chanting "Keep Stanford Wrestling" after the match. I still get chills.
