MBB - vs Cal State Fullerton - SkiBum80 - 11-08-2024

The Good News?  Our defense is good.
The Bad News?  Theirs is too.

RE: MBB - vs Cal State Fullerton - BobK - 11-08-2024

In person it’s our inability to shoot in the first 16 minutes but great comeback

RE: MBB - vs Cal State Fullerton - SkiBum80 - 11-08-2024

Oh, and I might add, as I've seen in a number of other threads for other games,
but occurring here also,
the officiating stinks  could be improved.

They found their offense and now up by 16

RE: MBB - vs Cal State Fullerton - SkiBum80 - 11-08-2024

Gealer on fire from so far outside he might be shooting them up from somewhere near the bookstore

I'm sorry, but Raynaud jacking up brick 3's is similar to Cam Brink doing it last year.
It cannot possibly be our A game.
If we resort to it we will lose.
It's not that either is particularly bad at them.
Just that when they do it and miss, which is likely 60%+ of the time,
we will almost never ever get the rebound.

Listening to Troy Clardy, who seems enthused. :)

Something going on with our court surface?
Seems like a lotta guys, on both teams, have been slipping and sliding on it all game long.

Same thought here, particularly with Blakes

The floor was a problem last night at the WBB game as well

Congrats to Coach(es) and the Players!
A good win.  Hard fought. Not always pretty. Lots of fouls. Some of them real.
Announcers saying career high points for Gealer and Blakes.
Raynaud with incredibly balanced 14 points & 14 boards.

At what point should we start to get excited about our results? Does winning the first 2 games by 20+ mean anything?

Asked by someone who has no idea which of our early season opponents are any good.

Neither opponent was good at all, but blowing both of them out is certainly better than any alternative!

Checked in at half to see us only up by 3 and was worried.

Then checked back during the second half to see us up by more than 15 and would really love to know what happened.   I believe Gealer started shooting and draining? ( he was 0/1 at half i think).

Also heard announcers say we were down by 11 at one point.   Was that in the first half or somehow early in the second?

Glad they were able to pull away in the second half.

Yep

First half, lead never relinquished after half

I'm excited.
Not just because of the wins, because yes the opponents so far are not the toughest we'll face (being polite here).
But more so because the team is playing in a way that Coach Smith said he was going to go.
Which is a more tenacious and swarming defense.
On display in first half today, where when our offense wasn't clicking at all, the defense still kept us in the game by keeping CSF from piling on a lotta points.
Secondly because Coach said that Raynaud would be emphasized more on the defensive side of things.
To defend the rim more. Not expected to be the high scorer every night.
This is a good move IMO and I think leads to the team overall being better.

Yeah - according to ESPNs Basketball Power Index (for whatever that's worth), Denver is #340 and Fullerton is 289.  Stanford is currently #94 - up from 105 last week.

Our early season schedule is definitely weak.  Upcoming non-league opponents are: Northern Arizona (#239), UC Davis (171), Norfolk St. (177), Santa Clara (119), Grand Canyon (72), Cal Poly (321), Utah Valley (212), Merrimack (202), & Oregon (30).  All of these games are at home except for Santa Clara and neutral site games with Grand Canyon (Palm Desert) and Oregon (San Jose).

ACC opponents will be a big step up obviously: Duke (2), UNC (9), Clemson (24), Miami (31), Pitt (35), NC State (41), SMU (49), Wake Forest (54), Syracuse (63), Notre Dame (66), Louisville (69), Florida St. (89), Va Tech (95), U Va (97), Ga Tech (99), Cal (106), & BC (117).

So Santa Clara, Grand Canyon, an early ACC game at Cal, and Oregon should be the games between now and the end of the year that should give a better idea of how the season might go.  For whatever it's worth, ESPNs BPI projects Stanford's record to be 16.2-14.8 (7.7-12.3 in the ACC).

Is there chalk talk tonight for MBB or is that a WBB thing?
