Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - metsjetsfan - 12-04-2011

How does everyone feel about the conference's chances for a good showing this bowl-ing season?

In my opinion, only one matchup is a guaranteed loss, but every other matchup is fair.  The flip side is that I don't think any game is a guaranteed win, so it could get ugly.

Stanford vs Oklahoma State - Tossup
Oregon vs Wisconsin - Tossup/slight lean towards Oregon
Utah vs Georgia Tech - Lean towards Utah (ACC stinks)
UCLA vs Illinois - Lean towards UCLA (Illinois has lost their last 6 games)
Arizona State vs Boise State - Definitely Boise State
Washington vs Baylor - Lead towards Baylor (Washington's defense will probably get shredded more)
Kal vs Texas - Slight lean towards Kal (how in the world is 5-loss Texas ranked?)

Stanford, Kal, and Washington will have the chance to take apart the perceived dominance of the Big 12.

Also, it's sad/funny how Boise State falls all the way down to the Las Vegas Bowl against a soulless Arizona State.  That has to be the worst matchup EVER for a #7 BCS 11-1 team.  Glad we didn't get screwed over  ;)

Stanford vs Oklahoma State - Better Than Bama Bowl
Oregon vs Wisconsin - Freshwater Habitat Bowl
Utah vs Georgia Tech - We Will Never Play Each Other Again Bowl
UCLA vs Illinois - Résumé Bowl
Arizona State vs Boise State - Disappointed Fans Bowl
Washington vs Baylor - Color Clash Bowl
Kal vs Texas -  2015 Preview Bowl

I'm not optimistic about any of the non-BCS bowls (not that those are gimmes but at least should be competitive). With 2 teams in BCS bowls and SC inelligible, the bowl that would normally get the Pac's #2 gets the #4 this year and likewise down the line.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - Farm93 - 12-04-2011

Stanford will be the underdog (look for 6-8 point spead)
Oregon should be favored.
Utah will be a 4 point favored by a few points.
UCLA will be the a dog.  (Illinois has more talent)
ASU will be a big underdog
Washington will be a multi-touchdown underdog
C..a...l will be an underdog

I think I am looking at two favorites.  If the Pac-12 gets 4 wins, the conference should be delighted.  Of course, as long as Stanford wins all will be good in my book.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - JeffInCorvallis - 12-04-2011

Oregon has a chance to finally win a big game.
Looking for ASU and Washington to get blown out.
Utah who knows?
UCLA could definitely lose - they came ready to play against Oregon but made way too many mistakes (besides being outmanned).
K.al is K.al - if they show up to play they could pull it out.
I'm concerned about our matchup with Okla St. - they don't have a good defense but they've rolled up an awful lot of points.  Could be a shootout.  We'll need to get really healthy and come up with a big play receiver.  Because I love the guy I really don't want Chris Owusu to play - gotta have another answer.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - oman - 12-04-2011

Stanford vs Oklahoma State - I'd make OSU 14 point favorites
Oregon vs Wisconsin - Oregon
Utah vs Georgia Tech - ???
UCLA vs Illinois - UCLA
Arizona State vs Boise State - Boise State
Washington vs Baylor - Absolutely Baylor
California vs Texas - Texas mauls them.

(I'm drinking the Big12 is underrated kookaid.)

14 point favorites? 8 point favorites? Really guys?

Sagarin makes OK State a 3 point favorite. That sounds about right to me.

Did he forget about Blackmon?

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

No, he didn't. But he did see that we've beaten Robert Woods, Marqise Lee, Keenan Allen, Juron Criner and Michael Floyd.

This comment makes me realize how we've faced a great WR almost every week this year, so I have hope that we can hold Blackmon to 100 yds and 1 TD.

**note: rant begins here**

And I'm not trying to beat a dead horse.  Really, I'm not.  But this also inadvertently makes me realize just how bad Luck's WRs are.
Stanford's opponents' best WR:

Duke's Conner Vernon: 956 yds and 5 TDs
Arizona's Juron Criner: 956 yds and 11 TDs
UCLA's Nelson Rosario: 1106 yds and 4 TDs
Colorado's Tony Clemons: 680 yds and 8 TDs
Washington State's Marquess Wilson: 1388 yds and 12 TDs
Washington's Jermaine Kearse: 501 yds and 6 TDs
the University of South Central's Robert Woods: 1292 yds and 15 TDs
the University of South Central's Marquis Lee: 1143 yds and 11 TDs
Oregon State's Markus Wheaton: 986 yds and 1 TD
Oregon's Deanthony Thomas: 571 yds and 9 TDs
Kal's Keenan Allen: 1261 yds and 6 TDs
ND's Michael Floyd: 1106 yds and 8 TDs
Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon: 1336 yds and 15 TDs

Stanford's best WR?  Griff Whalen: 664 yds and 4 TDs (also TE Coby Fleener: 648 yds and 10 TDs)

If most of these teams can have 900+ yd receivers, how in the world does Stanford not even have a 700 yd receiver with the best QB in college?  Short answer: our WRs are just not that good.  You might say, "Oh, well Stanford runs a power offense so Luck doesn't throw nearly as often as these other QBs."  Only the Oregon State, Duke, the University of South Central, Arizona, and Oklahoma State QBs completed more passes than Luck.  Luck does have great TEs/Hewitt, but let's see just how great those TEs/Hewitt are next year without Luck.  My inclination is to predict that they will not be nearly as effective (24 TDs combined).

So let's recognize how no QB other than Luck could attain a brilliant 167.5 QB rating, 70% completion rate, 35 TDs, and only 9 INTs with a below average WR corps.

Luck for Voldemort!  ;D

**end of rant , sorry for another long message.**

Point spreads are up.  Of the Pac-12 teams only Oregon is favored to win.

Stanford is starting as a 3.5 underdog to Oklahoma State.

Not flaming, but Criner is the only one on the same ladder as Blackmon and he's about 3 rungs below him,  not to mention you have not faced a passing QB as good as Weeden.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - Viking_Guy - 12-05-2011

Poke--

Woods, Lee and Barkley are pretty darned good.  SC being on probation has not given them the publicity they deserve.  But if they were eligible, I would bet they'd be top-10 in the BCS right now (they're #5 in the AP poll, #7 in ESPN's power rankings).

You're probably right about that, but those folks at ESPN sure seem to think that Matt Barkley is the cat's meow, ... and we've done okay against him over the years  :)

Not claiming they're equivalents, just making fun of the notion that we're somehow doomed because of Blackmon alone.

That said, Woods and Allen are each better than Criner.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - GulfCoastPoke - 12-05-2011

To be completely honest, I was surprised how good USC looked when I watched y'all play them, and how much talent they had at WR.  I'm usually traveling to OSU or LSU (wife is alum) games and I admit that I don't watch very much PAC football unless they are in the afternoon due to time zones.  All those things aside, I'm pretty confident that you have not faced a WR as good as Blackmon.

In no way shape or form is your team doomed because of Justin Blackmon.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - GulfCoastPoke - 12-05-2011

Please tell me that you smart Stanford people created some type of computer algorithm that automatically changed "the University of South Central" to "University of South Central" in my above post!?!?!?!?!

ETA  apparently this is true, and I'm an idiot for trying to type the three letter initials again.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - fullmetal - 12-05-2011

If you think Blackmon is good...well, did you see Randle and Smith over the course of the season?  I'm worried about Ok St.'s speed at RB and at WR combining to overload our front seven + safeties.  Anyiam was supposed to break out this season but hasn't really...let's hope he doesn't wake up over the next month.

Re: Early Predictions for Pac-12 Bowl Games? - Nan3cy - 12-05-2011

As you've noticed, our board has its quirks. There are several rival schools whose names get... well, adjusted, including the one you asked about, the one with the leprechaun mascot, and a couple of the state's flagship public universities. And there are people who get the same treatment (mainly the two head coaches who preceded Harbaugh), but you probably aren't going to have to worry about those. If you really want the name of one of these schools to look like what you type, try putting a period or two in between letters -- e.g. U...S...C.

Oh, and you also have to watch out for a word meaning really, really, very large.

(I hope I'm not confiding state secrets here. There was a time when I thought the whole board software thing was really funny, but I admit to thinking it's getting a little tiresome. I think the time when I liked it was the time when Stanford football was most depressing to watch, so we needed to be entertained any way we could. I hope those times never return.)
