MBB - vs Northern Arizona - Tue 11/12 -
SkiBum80 - 11-12-2024
Coming off 2 solid wins, we face Northern Arizona tonight at home, 7:00 pm.
On ESPN+/ACCNx
They are 2-0 like us and have a high scorer McLaughlin on their team that could rip some points off us.
They also have a beefy 7 foot center though doesn't look like he's a usual starter.
I hope the mascots are not an ominous indicator of how this game will go,
as they are the "Lumberjacks".

That lumberjack skit was an absolute hoot!

I think this is the first time in like three seasons that someone made a game thread for MBB before the game started.
Nice to see some enthusiasm for a program (hopefully) on the rebound.

Apparently, the Haasian slow start virus stubbornly remains.

Raynaud loads the whole team on his back and carries them back into the game
Sellers a real talent
Agarwal playing really well
And Gealer hits a 3 from the Tara logo
Apparently it’s still in his comfort zone

Tree explosion! After being down by 9 early, Stanford has blown this game wide open and leads at the half 48-26. They are 7-12 from beyond the arc.
Whether it's the mens' or womens' Stanford basketball team . . .
FEAR THE ThREE!

After being down 13-4, we go on a 44-13 run to finish the half.
Not bad.

Gaeler can only make his 3s on Tara’s logo :)
Also, so nice to see Agarwal become more than a bench player. He was a 4-star recruit and was being recruited by the likes of UNC.

Other than the slow start virus, this team seems transformed by Coach Smith
They emphasize D
And ball control, with 9 assists to only 2 turnovers
Of course tougher opponents yet to come will be a true test
Lumberjacks hanging tough
Playing us more or less even in the 2nd half so far

Before today, Northern Arizona's two wins were over the Park University Gilbert Buccaneers, and the Nelson Lions. Until very recently, Nelson was known as the Southwestern Assemblies of God. Neither is D-I.

NAU also destroyed both, scoring 100+ pts in each.
But yes tougher opponents await
I’m especially eager for Santa Clara game
They often seem to rise up when playing us
I really like that Coach Smith, and Coach Paye, working a lot of bench players in for a lot of minutes. Good way to see who’s hot and then give them more time. Today Agarwal was like that, setting a career high.

A lot of guys seem to be setting career highs under Smith. For some reason we are slow to get going. I am glad to see Smith give a lot of time to the guys who normally sit on the bench. Somewhere down the line we are probably going to need one or more of those guys to really step up and I think getting enough time on the court to show a little of what you can do is important for the future.

It's almost like if you have good coaching and good offensive and defensive schemes you can sub in different players and not lose much overall...
Really excited to hear we're playing crisp, tight, team basketball. I may even need to venture down to Maples this season for a Men's rather than Women's game!

I am glad to see that we've been taking care of business and pretty easily early on in Smith's tenure - something that couldn't be taken for granted under Haase.
However, I hope we are not in for a rude awakening as we head into conference play. Looking at our non-conference schedule, our toughest games might be against Grand Canyon and Oregon?
Plus it looks like we don't have to leave the state for the next month & a half until our New Year's Day game at Clemson. All our games away from Maples during that span are either local trips, @ Santa Clara and @ Cal or tournaments in Palm Springs or San Jose.
The January clash at Chapel Hill and the February battle vs. Cooper Flagg and Duke at Cameron Indoor will certainly test our mettle.

Love watching this team's effort. This is the Rayan Argawal that I thought we were getting last year who seemed buried on the bench. He made a couple of great hustle plays, block the shot out of bounds but go airborne and knock the blocked shot back into the hands of one of his guys and go the other way. In a way, I think the all out in your face defence has to get into the heads of opposing players now and then.

Yep. SCU won't make the NCAAs as long as Gonzaga, USF and St. Mary's are in the league, and probably now with Oregon State and Washington State in the league. Their collective record is 13-0. So SCU, with no realistic postseason hopes, gets up for the Stanford game more than any other. Same with baseball. Little brother syndrome, speaking as an SCU grad.
