Men’s Soccer 2024 NCAA Tournament - Hieronymus - 11-18-2024
Stanford the 16 seed; so a bye in the first round.
First game in Rd 2 would be UCLA or UCSB. Then likely #1 overall Ohio St if they win.
The seeding ended up somewhere between RPI (11) and coaches ranking (unranked).
7 of the 16 seeds are ACC. I think I count 9 teams overall.

Among the seeded teams in the tournament, Stanford this season played #3 Denver (L 0-1), #9 Clemson (W 3-2, L 0-1), #10 Duke (T 2-2), #11 Virginia (W, 1-0) and #12 SMU (T 2-2).
Among the unseeded teams, Stanford played UC Davis (W 1-0), UNC (L 1-2), and NC State (T, 0-0).
Not a record that would have you believe that they can advance very far in the tournament. At least they get one home match.

On one hand, they should have beaten SMU and NC St and tied Denver. On the other hand, they finished out the year with 1 win, 4 losses and 3 ties. Frankly, Clemson beat them badly in the ACC tournament even though the score was only 1:0.
So no I am not very optimistic either, though on any given night this team could win or lose against any tournament team. I just don’t think they can win 5 games in a row based on their end season form. That is basically what I said last year when they made it the round of 8 and lost to Clemson.

The men’s soccer team was also playing today, and that match is also in overtime. We apparently built a 2-nil lead in the first half, and UCSB tied it in the second half; the tying goal coming with about 12 seconds left.

I haven't listened to the entire broadcast, but this ESPN announcer only seems to talk about UCSB's chances in the game. You'd hardly know that there was another team on the field, and that they were leading for most of the game.

And 5 a piece isn’t enough, and we go to sudden death…
Apparently our second goal was with 4 seconds left in the first half. Also, we stopped a penalty in regulation.
And on the seventh penalty, Stanford wins!

Both men's and women's matches were insane and could have ended differently. When Adnan missed his PK, I thought the team was doomed. Luckily, Schnebly blocked the next UCSB PK, and Jarvie made his PK to win the match. I'm so happy both teams won, and their season continues. The women's team gets to play one more at home hosting ND. Hopefully they will play better than they did in South Bend.
