WBB: Stanford 91 Morgan State 49 - 81alum - 11-21-2024

Preview:

Coming off two lackluster performances resulting in a loss at Indiana, we try to get back on track with a game against Morgan State at Maples on Friday evening.

Morgan State is a public HBCU located in Baltimore with about 10,000 students.  Their WBB team came out to play us last year on New Year's eve and we won 98-38.  You can see last year's thread here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=24689&highlight=morgan+state

Last year I abandoned my usual pessimism when looking over this opponent, and I was right to do so, given a 60 point win.  We are a very different team from a year ago, however.  How about Morgan State?

Last year Morgan State was not just a physically overmatched team, they were not a very good team, going 3-11 in their conference.  So far this year they are 4-3 playing in the soft part of their schedule.  Massey has them at #312, but that is up 18 slots after their win over Towson.  (Massey has us at 7, showing the defect of Massey using last year's records to start the statistical analysis for the new season.)

Morgan State is led by 5'7" junior guard Ja'la Bannerman and 6'2" senior forward Laila Fair who are their only two double digit scorers.  Last year Fair led them against us with 8 points.  They also have  6'2" center Jael Butler from Gilroy who is playing for them this year (she didn't get into the game last year) so she could have family present for a kind of homecoming.

Morgan State will match up better with us this year than they did last year, given our diminished height and their addition of a 6'2" center.  Their leading scorer did not play against us last year--not sure if she is a transfer--so they will have a new wrinkle for our defense to handle.  But our coaches are probably much more concerned about using the next few games to improve our team than they are about losing one of the games, given how overmatched the next opponents will be.  We fans will want to see improvement too--our offense becoming crisp, with lots of movement and lots of assists, and our defense getting back to early season form, with sound positioning that limits open shots, cuts off drives, and generates deflections and steals.  That is what is on my wish list.

Thank you, alum81, for your usual informative and insightful preview.

At this point, my primary wish for this Cardinal team is to win the games that they are favored to win,
and I hope that is enough for them to qualify for the NCAA tournament, thereby preserving
their consecutive NCAA appearances streak which currently stands at 35, second most after Tennessee.

Then, I hope that they can somehow steal a few upsets over teams that are favored to win over them.

Yep, I'm hoping we can qualify for the Big Dance, and maybe even win our first game.
Beyond that, I'm afraid, is a little pie in the sky.

Just noticed that Bannerman, their leading scorer, is 14/29 from three point range.  Per chalk talk, Morgan State asked for the game since they have several Nor Cal players.

Talana is out tonight.

Ok, we'll see how Becerra does for WBB with Mary Murphy as color.  It was a pleasant surprise to hear Mary Murphy's voice when I first tuned in.

Heal gets to start over Clardy.  Interesting.

Anyone else having trouble watching the feed from ACCNX?

Demetre and Harriel are each 3-4 from beyond the arc.  They said we should call her Deme3

And Jzani3?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - M T - 11-22-2024

It's raining faster on the Tara court than outside.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - martyup - 11-22-2024

Halftime score is 52-21.  Deme3 is on fire!  She's 6-8 overall and 3-4 from 3.  Her fade away is money.  The team is playing good basketball and it's fun to watch.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - M T - 11-22-2024

I don't recall such a blowout since the early 90s when the other teams weren't yet good enough and Stanford was so good.
44 point lead at 22.5 minutes.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - martyup - 11-22-2024

Midway through the 3rd Q: GAME PCT 64.1 52.6 100.0

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - 81alum - 11-22-2024

Midway through the 3rd: Stanford 15 assists, Morgan State 1 assist.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - M T - 11-22-2024

The brakes are on.  Current players on the court are 2 for 10 in FG.

It is the right thing to do.  But it was fun while it lasted.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - martyup - 11-22-2024

It became garbage time in the 3rd Q.  Glad to see the bench players getting some good playing time.  This will be good for the team down the road.

Looks like the starters won't see the court in the 4th.  It's killing our stats, but good for the team.

She did quite a good job tonight.  I appreciated things like the "Kate Paye has kept the chair she has been in for years.".

Without looking, try to remember who got a double-double tonight.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State, Friday 7pm - martyup - 11-22-2024

Tess Heal had a pretty darn good game.  She scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting and was 2-3 from downtown.

Shay is the energizer bunny and made some sweet steals.  However, 1-6 at the charity stripe will not cut it.

Umeh made them feel her presence.  She was a bully under the basket and ended up with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.  HER FIRST DOUBLE DOUBLE AT STANFORD!
