Buying Fiesta tickets on StubHub, good idea? -
TreeFitty - 12-05-2011
My fiance and I need economize. We're driving in from LA the morning of the game and staying at a cheapo motel after the game.
How much cheaper would getting game tix on StubHub potentially be?

Right now, they are considerably more expensive. Don't know how that will change over time. For the Orange Bowl, prices went down over time, but am not sure whether the Fiesta wil do the same.Â

The "Problem" is that the Fiesta Bowl is the best non-Title game bowl match-up. Oklahoma State will travel well because this is not their norm. Last year, the Orange Bowl had Stanford, very far from home, vs. Va Tech in its third Orange Bowl in four years. The sponsors of the game probably did not really want to see the game and were happy to dump the tickets. The equation is a little different this time around, so I would not bank on the tickets declining too much. It could happen, but it might not.

I was at the Orange Bowl last year. We got tickets early and they ended up being on StubHub much closer to gametime and much cheaper. I agree with the above that there will be a lot of Oklahoma State fans there so that can change the calculus.
We ended up staying at a expensive but pretty craptacular hotel in South Beach last year. I am not doing that again. I went ahead and booked reservations at a nice hotel this time.
Stanford is not going to be in many BCS bowls in our lifetime so I am willing to splurge on these trips. I am leaning towards locking up tickets early as I don't want to take any chances.

I share the same opinions and experiences of other posters.
I bought three tickets last year to the Orange Bowl through Stanford. I did this for three reasons: 1) inexperience, 2) a loyalty to my alma mater (to help take care of their required allotment), and 3) an expectation that we were in the running for the choicest seat. The AD assigns seats on a value system listed below:
Alumnus/a
Former student athlete
Years of season ticket buyer for football, men's and women's basketball, and baseball
Athletics volunteer service (including University Trustee and SAA Board)
Athletics lifetime giving
Current fiscal year Buck Cardinal giving
University lifetime giving
Bequest intention to Athletics
We were told we might be bumped up to the choicest seat (near the 50) given our longevity as a STH, but ended up on the 10 yard line - it wasn't bad, but could have been better (I did read the horror stories of some longstanding STH in the lowest row in the end zone).  I did read, after I had committed to the order, about how the Va Tech people were not buying through their AD - because they were familiar with the Orange Bowl and knew to buy from the secondary market. I did check eBay and Craigslist about a week before the game, and I saw two seats on eBay, on the 40 upper deck, starting at $50 - and they did not sell!
There is a difference with the Fiesta Bowl - it is closer to both schools, and this is indeed an attractive matchup - it is #3 vs. #4, it's not a rerun of a show we saw just a month ago, and the score will NOT be 9-6. So I think it will be somewhat of a gamble as to what tickets will sell for on the secondary market. I can say this - they won't be as low as what was seen with the Orange Bowl. I can also say - the advantage will be, you'll know exactly where your seat will be.
There is the one benefit from buying from the Stanford AD. You'll be guaranteed to be sitting amongst Stanford fans, whereas you won't be sure who your neighbors will be via StubHub or other sellers.
(I will say this, having spent 11 days one summer with my son during a traveling baseball tournament: Oklahoma people are nice and friendly. And the OU fans at the Sun Bowl were pleasant. Contrast this with my experience with Georgia fans when I went to the Bluebonnet Bowl decades ago - talk about bitter rooters.)

Embo - I probably got my ticket from a longtime STH who sold his/her endzone lower level ticket for the Orange Bowl on StubHub--it was a great seat, imho. Then again, I saw the majority of the game through my camera lens :p
I'm not looking forward to paying for this year's tickets...

So you guys are just suggesting to go through this site if you don't think you are going to be beset by buyers remorse:

Ended up buying on a third party site for $145 a ticket (fees included). Section 415.

Tickets at the 200-level in our section are going for $473 on StubHub. It sounds like you saved $10 to sit in the terraces section away from the fans. It's not in an official OSU section, at least.

I don't know how many seats were at the Orange Bowl, but the Fiesta Bowl holds 73k, 60k something naturally with some extra seats created for the Fiesta Bowl. Of course the number of good seats is probably about the same.
Does anyone know which side is the Stanford side?

141-144 (student & low cost)
101-108 (main section)
201-211 (club)
401-412 (terrace)
Most of those seats are not available on StubHub, but it's probably worth checking.

Actually, saved $45 all together. Paid $290 for 2 tickets after fees and delivery instead of $335 through Stanford and got to choose my seat next to other fellow alums from my year.
i'm quite happy with paying 13% less for more control (like avoiding getting stuck in an end zone.)

Yes, Georgia fans were unpleasant both before and after the game. I went with my old roommate and another person from my freshman dorm. We pulled up to our hotel the day before the game - IIRC, the Holiday Inn across from the Astrodome. As we were getting out of our car, two cars of Georgia fans pulled up. Their cars were painted with phrases like "Do it dawggy style". Odd thing was, these fans were not students but people in their forties. They took one look at us and drawled, "Well, thank y'all for comin', too bad you're gonna lose." BTW they did not look like college graduates.
After the game, a couple of Stanford students were rearranging the letters on a sign in the lobby that said something like, "Welcome Stanford and Georgia fans" to make it say, "Stanford #1". Up walks a Georgia fan - and again, this is a person in his late 30's at least - and his temples are tensed and there is steam rising from his head. "Whaddya mean, '#1'? So you beat us. So? We gonna be national champeens next year! I bet ya! I bet ya!" I thought he might start throwing punches. What horrible losers.
