WBB: Stanford vs. UCSD, Friday 2pm -
81alum - 11-27-2024
Preview:
I thought about titling this post "Coach Vanderveer returns to Maples!" but that would be too clever by half. Coach Vanderveer is Heidi, Tara's younger sister, and we have played her team--UCSD--off and on for years now.
UCSD is off to a terrible start this year, although they do seem to be a hard-luck team. They are 1-6. However, strangely 3 of those games were overtime games and they lost all three. And they have never been blown out. Arizona beat them 65-54. Their sole win was against Occidental--a near-exhibition game. Massey has them at 300 which would make them one of the worst teams we have faced. I guess it is perfect for Black Friday.
Kayanna Spriggs, a 6'2" senior forward, leads USCD in scoring at 12 ppg, all from close in. Sabrina Ma, a 5'10" junior from San Francisco, is their next scorer at 10 ppg and is shooting 38% from three point range.
USCD is averaging 21 turnovers a game. (Can you say the word "Shay"?)
Scheduling:
This might be a good time to comment on the lack of strength in the home preseason schedule. At the last couple of chalk talks I heard grumbling about the weak opponents. And to be fair, we always used to have one marquee opponent (or more) come out to Maples. UConn, or Tennessee in its hey day, later on it was South Carolina. "These games are not going to help us get better" I heard someone say.
They might be right. But welcome to the ACC. The weak preseason schedule is mostly a function of the high travel demands that our new conference is placing on our team. Let me explain.
Apart from the Dec 13 game against Cal, league play in the ACC begins on January 2, which is also the beginning of Winter quarter. Our players have been advised to minimize their academic schedule during Winter quarter and to avoid in-person classes during that stretch, as a way of coping with the travel. To balance this, they have been increasing their academic load during summers and fall. And our scheduling has tried to create a basketball schedule that absolutely minimizes travel during their very (academically) intense fall quarter.
To play really good teams we need to offer them something. What we traditionally offer them is a home-and-away series. The other teams comes to Maples one year and we agree to travel to their place one year.
That no longer works well in the new regime. We kept it up with Indiana since they had already traveled out here last year. With Gonzaga we do home-and-aways but the travel to Spokane is not unreasonable. The question is who can we get to come to Maples who will NOT insist on a home-and-away? And guess who those teams are? They are the teams we are playing--usually mid-major or less and usually from California.

Thanks for pointing out the additional complications of moving into the ACC while being a Stanford student.
We do go to Baton Rouge next Thursday, Dec. 5th as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge, so LSU will certainly be a test.
Plus we play Ohio State on Dec. 20th in San Francisco.
Perhaps we can play a Thanksgiving weekend tournament and hope that the organizers can get another big name.
Now that USC and UCLA are no longer in-conference opponents, maybe we can schedule a home-and-away series with them?
Some of the Texas schools, like Texas or Baylor might not be as much of a trip either (relatively speaking, compared to going to Storrs or Knoxville)?

Yes, the LSU trip will be a challenge, but it was not a home-and-away agreement, obviously.
Ohio State will also give us a good challenge, and fortunately they are traveling out here. It is after the end of Fall quarter anyway, so our travel restrictions would permit us to do home and aways during mid to late December, although that was not needed in this case.
I do think the most reasonable way to up our preseason difficulty would be with some former Pac 12 schools. We did do this with WSU and could with others. I was actually a bit surprised that WSU was the only one this year. Maybe Kate just wanted an easier preseason given all the changes to the team.

The Stanford WBB staff is very aware that usc and ucla destroyed the pac 12. Don’t hold your breath on playing them

I know with the Pac-12 conference scheduling, we usually do a weekend series against the two rival schools every week (i.e. Oregon/Oregon State, USC/UCLA, etc.) which doesn't leave much room/flexibility to schedule in another game and I am not sure how it is with ACC conference scheduling, but can we take a page out of UConn's book and schedule a non-conference game amidst the conference scheduling (esp. if we are already in the area)?
I know that doesn't solve the issue with the early part of the schedule but if we are simply looking to get more marquee non-conference games on the books, that might be an option

League games are now Thursday Sunday. Not the old Friday Sunday

And cross-country travel days are?
And in-class days are? (I sure hope that Chemistry and such are not done at home!)

Until we get this year's stellar recruiting class in and give them a year's experience (and maybe until UCLA's all-star junior class heads off to the WNBA) I wouldn't want to play them.

I don’t think that’s the WBB program’s fault, and while I get the anger, I think we will want to resume playing non conference games against good regional teams.
Moreover given our extensive conference travel, we should look to play non conference games against geographically close teams. And we should continue to challenge ourselves against big name opponents.

Agree. If we expect to beat good teams in the tournament we need to be prepared for what such teams can do. We already play "enough" teams we can beat, so adding a few more challenging games will be a plus for our team's development.

Actually, I like the timing of Stanford's OOC games vs ranked teams
towards the latter portion of their OOC schedule,
which are on the road vs #7 LSU next week
and on a neutral site close to home vs #11 Ohio State
right before the Christmas break and the start of ACC conference play.
Both LSU and Ohio State are currently ranked higher
than all ACC teams except for current #3 Notre Dame,
with the latter really being a cut above everybody else.
And both LSU and Ohio State will provide the Cardinal
a similar taste of how it is to compete vs the rest
of the ACC ranked teams including current #13 Duke,
#16 North Carolina, #20 NC State and #24 Louisville.

And playing either of them would mean playing against former Stanford players. No, I don't miss playing them at the moment.
I think the best options might be Washington and the two Oregon schools. Colorado, Utah, and the Arizonas are a bit more of a travel issue. Washington looks quite good this year--would be a tough game.

I think Phoenix (ASU) is closer to SFO than Seattle (UW) is.

Talana is not dressed, again. Chalk talk notes Shay's terrific progress this year.
I think this is the third game in a Row with no band, no Dollies, no cheerleaders, and sparse attendance. I know the reasons, but it puts a dampener on the atmosphere.

GO CARD!!
Fear the ThREE is back. After one Q, we lead 32-4. We are 4-6 from 3, with Bosgana going 3-3. Not only that, Bosgana has 13 points.
RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UCSD, Friday 2pm -

Now 41-4.

UCSD usually puts up more resistance. 41--4 and they call timeout.

Papadaki just made her third basket of the year - in the second quarter! 14 - 48 Stanford

This team's shooting is so streaky. Bosgana is 3-3 from 3 and 6-6 overall. Deme3 is 0-3 from 3 and 2-6 overall.

First quarter was an offensive beauty. Second quarter, we played what I would expect with our third string in - Shay coming back down to earth with a few mistimed moves and an embarrassing victim of a pickpocket while chatting with KP at the bench. But this is exactly the in-game experience they need.
I liked what I saw from Ume - she had a great assist to Heal and she moves and communicates really well on defense. Now to work on her ball handling!
Stavi is really fun in defense - fast, long arms, and really smooth. It's been nice to see some faces that don't get a lot of playing time.
