College Football Playoff Predictions? -
ADPinWDC - 12-08-2024
BRACKET
#12 CLEM vs #5 TEX
==> #5 TEX vs #4 AZST
Longhorn Defense gets to chase mighty Devil RB Cam Skattabo, the wrecking ball.
#9 TENN vs #8 OHST
==> #8 OHST vs #1 OREG
Tenn can beat OHST, but Buckeyes can give us the BigTEN champ game we didn't get because OHST lost to MICH.
And OffCo Chip Kelly gets a shot at his Ducks.
#11 SMU vs #6 PNST
==> #6 PNST vs #3 BOIS
Nit Lions showed well against #1 Ducks, and could beat both versions of Broncos.
Top RB Ashton Jeanty gets to face the toughest defense all season for him. Great matchup.
#10 INDY vs #7 NDAM
==> #7 NDAM vs #2 GEOG
The Battle of Indiana results in Domers crushing the Hoosiers, who beat no ranked teams.
The ensuing quarter final is a matchup of solid defenses. Which QB will play better?
SEMINFINALS
#5 TEX vs #1 OREG
Intriguing play calling matchup.
#6 PNST vs #7 NDAM
Classic Midwest power matchup of old schools.
NDAM run game could be difference.
CHAMP GAME
#1 OREG vs #7 NDAM
Oregon as a complete team, runs the table undefeated, like MICH last year. Domers will study the PNST film.
Duck defense forcing turnovers decides the game.

no predictions here, but.......so glad that Alabama didn't make it. too many other deserving teams.
if it were up to me, Oregon would play the winner of Notre Dame-Indiana, since they didn't play either team during the regular season.

BostonCard - 12-08-2024
This could have been an eight team playoff. Indiana, SMU, Tennessee, and tOSU didn’t win their conferences (and in 3/4 cases, didn’t even make their conferences championships).
Oregon, Georgia, ASU, Clemson, and Boise State + 3 at large (Notre Dame, Texas, and Penn State) would have been enough.

True, but those extra games bring in lots of money. I can see the 12 becoming 16 when the $ overwhelms the logic that being a conference champion deserves a bye as a "reward". Just think, Oregon could be playing Alabama in round 1.

That is at the cost of potentially having the players have to play up to 17 games (12 regular season games, a conference championship, and up to four playoff games). That's an NFL schedule. It's hard to blame the players for wanting to get paid, but we really should limit the number of games even if it means leaving money on the table. It's not good for the players, it's not good for academics, and it just cements the idea that college football is a business that just happens to co-locate with college campuses.
The conference championships are basically pointless. In 3/4 major conferences, the loser of the conference championship made it to the playoffs. If you want to be charitable, Clemson made it in by virtue of winning the ACC championship, and I don't follow closely enough to know whether ASU would have made it had they not won the Big12. But it is kind of without point. In fact, what is even the point of having conferences. A radical proposal would be to let teams cobble together their own schedule each year, piecing together a schedule that produces a combination of marquee match-ups and winnable games, and let the committee arbitrarily sort it out at the end of the year based on record and strength of schedule.

The Conf Championships DO matter for seeding in the bracket and first round byes. That is significant.

To be honest, not really, or at least not enough to justify the added injury risk and distraction from academics when most students will be preparing for finals. Again, some of these players will play 17 football games by the time this is all said and done, and reducing the wear-and-tear that they face and shifting the balance from being semi-pro athletes to being students is good, actually.

ESPN First look... No Cinderellas.
ALL CHALK: Hosting Home teams each booked wins
But not all top seeds will win their Quarter finals.(none?), as some lower seeds are ranked better than their seedings
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43080654/college-football-playoff-2024-quarterfinal-first-look-preview
Like #6 PNST vs BOIS
-- How does Jeanty fare against Lion Defense?
Or #5 TEX over #4 AZST -- two hot teams. Barnburner, but TEX Defense my win out.
or #8 OHST vs #1 OREG -- the B1G champ game we didn't see. Speedy Ducks vs Stout Buckeyes.
or very solid #7 NDAM vs #2 GEOG, Bulldogs uncertain at QB, while Domers being strong ground game.
Defense could dominate all four contests.
Interesting bet: Take the under on all four and perhaps go 3 and 1.

and I'd say not much "uncertainty" around the Georgia QB situation as Carson Beck had UCL surgery on Monday and is out and Gunner Stockton will start

GameAbove Sports bowl, played at Ford Field in Detroit. Toledo (8-5) beat Pitt (7-6) in six overtimes, final score 48-46...interesting.
Game attendance was just 26,219. Toledo is just an hour away, Pitt is about four hours away. Seems like paying customers stayed away in droves.

I mean, now that there is a playoff, it will be the slow death of non-playoff bowls. Will be interesting to see what TV viewership does.

According to reports, there were fewer than 10,000 people actually in attendance. It was at a nice venue (Ford Field) and both universities were within driving distance.
Can't find this year's ratings. Laster year's rating for this game was a 1.3, with 2.23 million people watching. It was the 17th most popular televised bowl game last year:

most of the bowl games are on ESPN so as long as they at least breakeven and/or ESPN finds a suitable replacement I would expect the games to continue, well unless some teams decide the extra practice is not worth the cost (financial and otherwise) of the games...
