MBB: Stanford 88 -- Virginia 65 -
skip75 - 01-10-2025
Quiz question: What is the only ACC men's basketball team with an all-time undefeated league record on their home court?
Answer: Stanford - now 1-0 in ACC action at Maples.
Can Stanford move to 2-0 vs. UVA? The Cardinal is favored by 8 with an over/under of 127 (implied score of 67-1/2 to 59-1/2) . Stanford is 10-5 (2-2 in ACC). Virginia is 8-7 (1-3) with 4 losses to Top 25 teams. They are 0-3 in true road games. Stanford is ranked better than the Cavaliers in all 5 of the ratings I look at, including #83 vs. #93 per Massey. Obviously, it would be big for Stanford to win and get to 3-2 before a trip to Wake Forest & Duke next week.
Virginia has had a disappointing season after being picked 5th in the preseason poll. But soon after that, Coach Tony Bennett retired. Bennett spent 15 years at UVa. Following a 2-year rebuild, Bennett led the Cavs to 10 NCAA tournament appearances over the next 13 seasons. They won 6 ACC regular season championships and 2 ACC tournament championships. In 2019 they won the NCAA championship. His calling card was a defense-first mentality and tempo control. Associate head coach Ron Sanchez assumed the reins, so the style of play is similar - a big reason for the low over/under.
Soon after Bennett retired, Jason Warley left the team - he had transferred to UVa after 3 years at Florida State and was expected to see a lot of playing time as a point guard. Since then, other than wins over Villanova & North Carolina State, there hasn't been much to cheer about. Some of the problems have been negative margins in rebounding & turnovers, and following up competitive 1st half play with 2nd half let-downs.
Virginia is led by 2 players who have started all 15 games. #2 Elijah Saunders (6'8"/240 Jr F), a transfer from San Diego State leads the Cavs with 12.1 ppg & 5.3 rpg. #11 Isaac McKneely (6'4"/195 Jr G), in his 2nd year as a full-time starter is scoring 11,7 ppg and dishing out 2.9 assists per game. He is their biggest 3-point threat with 42 3s (3rd in the ACC) on 96 attempts for a percentage of .438, which leads the ACC.
The other 3 starters vs. Cal were: #4 Andrew Rohde (6'6"/200 Jr G) another full-time starter last season, who averages 9.4 ppg and leads in assists with 3.1 per game; #5 Jacob Cofie (6'10"/232 Fr F), 8.1 ppg and leading rebounder with 5.5 per game; and #10 Taine Murray (6'5"/208 Sr G), 4.2 ppg.
Other "bigs" in the rotation include #0 Blake Buchanan (6'11"/227 Soph F, 5.1ppg & 4.6 rpg) and #23 TJ Power (6'9"/221 Soph F) a transfer from Duke. #21 Anthony Robinson (6'10"/250 RFr F/C) has played only 46 minutes this season, but some posters on The Sabre.com basketball message board are suggesting that he could be used to body up Raynaud.
In the backcourt, the rotation includes #7 Dai Dai Ames (6'1"/190 Soph G, transfer from Kansas State) who has started 11 games, and #9 Ishan Sharma (6'5"/192 Fr G) who hit 3 3-pointers at Cal.
It will be interesting to see Stanford's rotation. As always, they will depend heavily on the Big 3. Kyle Smith had some praise for Ryan Agarwal & Donavin Young after the Va Tech game -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87pdOWmYOuA. Agarwal seems to have secured a spot in the starting line-up for now. Smith called Young "our best front-court athlete", adding that he has the quickest feet and is the best defender. I wouldn't be surprised to see Young in there as well. Beyond that they need to get some quality minutes from some others - Cammann, Stinson, Gealer, Okpara and/or ???

Good Comments. Preseason, I figured this game would be very tough to win, now it looks like a game we should win. You are right about Argawal, he tough play even though his shot isn't falling is keeping him on the floor. It would be a very big deal if either he or Benny can recapture their shooting mojo. It would also make it very hard for them to double Raynaud. Blakes may get an opposing guard in this game where he is the quicker player. Clemson and Pitt gave him a hard time. Maybe Stinson or Young will show they deserve more time. We need to win to go on the road feeling good aobut ourselves.

I was happy to see Okpara in the starting lineup last game, but then he couged it. He tried to do way too much the first 3 times he had the ball, and he was removed...for good reason. He plays so hard and can actually hit an occasional 3, and brings strength and tenacity on D. I hope the coaches tell him he must pass the ball first on his first several possessions.

Stretched a 7pt lead to 10 on a buzzer-beating running 3 by Blakes off a steal! Loving the momentum! 40-30 at the half.

Great first half punctuated by a steal and a buzzer beating three by Blakes to go up 40-30.
While Raynaud is leading the team with 10 points, each other starter has at least five points, so we are spreading the ball around. It was nice to see Agarwal hit an open three as well.
We'll have to work on our perimeter defense, as Virginia is making 50% of their three's (6/12) but we look pretty good for the first 20.

Stanford officially stomping Virginia. Can't say enough about the play of Raynaud, and I'm happy to see Agarwal follow up a good game with what to me is an even better game. Add Young, and you have a team rounding into form. Really excited to see what the rest of the season holds, and I'm so glad to have been wrong with my pessimistic take after last week.

Even amidst their season of turmoil, Virginia has retained much of their staunch, stingy defense -- they had only given up 62.4 ppg. Putting this many points on them has to be encouraging.

Rebound by Kaster.
Excellent win and great to see these two get stats

Great quality win; we finished Virginia off 88-65.
I welcomed the balance we got on offense. It feels like we were able to pass out of the double teams on Raynoud and were not over reliant on him.
Obviously, the competition will be tougher against the top-notch ACC competition, but we took care of business and hopefully build confidence heading into the meat of the conference schedule

That was good for the ego. We survived their run (brought them to within 10) and stretched the lead back out to a final score of 88-65, punctuated by an emphatic dunk by #24 Thompson (more please!). Agarwal was everywhere. Young has a lot of upside. Hopefully, we learn how to finish off games.

As of this morning, Stanford was 11th out of 18 (?) ACC teams I saw on the kenpom rankings list (rough eyeball). It's a decent place to be: the teams ahead of us are good (Duke at #2, Pitt/Clem/UNC at #27-29), and hopefully the confidence from wins like these can fuel more improvement and focused practices. Would love to see this team punch up under the coaching of KS. We shall see.
(Stanford was #95, and Virginia was #122 in this morning's rankings.)

That was fun. Reynaud couldn't hit the side of a barn door from distance, but still ended with 22(?) points. They ran pick and roll for Kaman for 8 points while Reynaud sat, Gealer with a couple 3s. Sellers more good shots from corner and baseline, Young a new shining light, and Okpara back with a good game. Too many fouls in second half, but Va didn't take advantage. They aren't the best team in ACC, but if they continue to improve could perhaps finish in top half. They do lots of good things. So much more fun than last year.

Lots to like today!
A good crowd (including lots of Wahoos) creating an atmosphere much more like a real basketball game. I'd like to see that continue and grow even more later this month with home games vs. Miami, Florida State, & Syracuse.
Some good support for the Big 3. Agarwal looking better all the time - hope that the 3 he hit is a sign of more to come. Young was really solid in his first start - only played 16 minutes. Not sure if that's due to gradually working him in coming off the injury. In any case, it looks like he's in the rotation, and maybe the starting line-up, to stay. Gealer looked great running the offense, which was needed with Blakes & Sellers in a bit of foul trouble. Okpara bounced back with a good 15 minutes, contributing 5 pts. 2 assists, & 3 steals. Cammann was very effective - good to be able to give Raynaud a break without having things get too dicey. Stanford's bench outscored UVa's 22-12.
Stanford was dominant inside. They got 20 of the 26 rebounds off the UVa shots and 14 of 31 on their own misses. Points in the paint were 40-12 for Stanford, and 2nd chance points were 19-8. Stanford had 8! dunks (to none for UVa) - by 6! different players. Raynaud & Young had 2 each, while Sellers, Blakes, Cammann, & Jaylen Thompson each slammed in one.
Stanford scored 22 points off 12 Cav turnovers, while UVa got only 4 points off 6 Stanford turnovers.
And nice that there was a big lead, allowing Cole Kastner (the Menlo School grad & former UVa lacrosse player - team captain, All-ACC, & NCAA champion!) to get into the game, delighting the crowd (and his teammates). And then, of course, Jaylen Thompson putting an exclamation point on the day with a thunderous dunk.
At 3-2, Stanford is tied with SMU & Pitt for 6th place. Things get tougher this week back on the road at Wake Forest & UNC (I mistakenly said Wake & Duke in my preview post.) This seems to me like not quite as daunting a trip as the last one to Clemson & Pitt. And I'm hopeful that they're better prepared for it having gone through that experience and then following up with the 2-game sweep at home (plus having Young more established in the rotation). Not predicting any victories, but I am cautiously optimistic that they might make a good showing.

Good points! We had stretches against Pitt and Clemson where we almost looked like with belonged with them then would hit a bad patch and the game would get away. Against VT we played pretty well but still had some rough areas. This game seemed close to 40 minutes of Smith type basketball. Not sure if there we any of those "why did you even try that" kind of shot, just plain good old fashioned share the ball type of game.
Smith obviously rewards guys who play hard and play his way with starts and minutes. Argawal's constant hard nosed effort regardless of his shooting has pretty much made him starter #4. With the apparent arrival of Young, the last starter is probably going to rotate around with Young, Camman and Okpara unless one of the three starts to standout consistently.
Can we beat either Wake or UNC? I think maybe if we can play another 40 min like yesterday. Winning one tough road game like these would probably really help the team mental outlook.
One add, Smith's comments about player development during his press conference are pretty interesting.

That was a fun press conference to listen to (aren't they all after a good win?). Partly kumbayah (deservedly so), but also pretty insightful.
One thing I got the sense of from this presser was that guys were anticipating and assertive about going after rebounds, something I hope the women's team can find again. Sometimes you just gotta start moving before the opponent does, even before you're quite sure where the ball is going...
That 1H buzzer beating three-point shot from Blakes is on the team Instagram account. Go watch it.
