Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - MSG1716 - 01-02-2025

[The 2024 women's volleyball thread is here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=25096]

I agree.  I was particularly impressed with Sayer's blocking ability and Parks' mobility.

MB:  I'd be shocked if Sayer doesn't start with Andrew as our two MBers.

Setter:  Parks looked good, but I wouldn't count out Yu.  She seems like an incredible competitor and I'm sure she's working her tail off right now to win that starting job next Fall.  I like that both Yu and Parks have powerful jump serves.

Libero:  I give the odds to Pringle with Etzler and Cawa too fighting to be either libero or DS.  There's often a big jump from freshman to Sophomore year, and I would expect that from Cawa (and Yu)

Were we in the running for Taylor Harvey?  She looked good too and I hate seeing her go to Texas.

Already looking forward to the Cardinal-White scrimmage in 8 months.

She visited and there was plenty of talk about her joining her sister at Stanford.
A lot of disappointment when she opted for Texas.

Agree with all said re: Sayers and Parks after having watched them at the open practice of the USA VB U20 developmental program in Louisville. And yes they have played together even before the UA match.

"The NCAA is considering allowing five years of eligibility for players in all sports moving forward, per an NCAA official."

If this policy was adopted I think it helps Stanford WVB more than most other top programs.

A random football response to the above X comment:

"so you can juco for 2 and then have redshirt 1 year and still have 5 years of eligibility…i’m all for people getting their doctorate with little to no student debt, but I don’t know many doctors who played O-line at Ole Miss"

I’m curious what problem this is meant to solve.  I’m all for it if it improves graduation rates by giving athletes extra time to balance athletics and academics (for example, by taking a slightly lighter load with a goal of graduating in five years).  But I have a hard time believing that just giving blanket five years of eligibility does anything.

One of the things that historically is great about collegiate sports is that you get both continuity year to year (at least you used to, before the “portal”) and yet yearly renewal as seniors graduated and new freshmen enrolled.  If you are lucky, you get to witness players develop within the system from promising freshmen to absolute stars, and if you are really lucky, you get an incredible class like the 2016 class with Jenna Gray, Kathryn Plummer, Morgan Hentz et al and get to watch them win three titles in four years.  I can’t claim that four years is the magic number; obviously I would have loved to have Plummer et al for a fifth year.  But it seems like it makes a good balance between continuity and renewal, and that automatic five years might further encourage transferring as players get antsy or feel like they are buried in the depth chart.

It means fewer people get to play. A really good player can occupy a "slot" for five years, not the previous four. Even "good" players that would have started in year "N" when the incumbent left  now starts in year "N+1". Anybody who is admitted will be competing with a player pool that is potentially 125% the size of the one under the current system for the same number of starting spots and spots on the teams.

In general, I don't think it will help Stanford much. Once a player is eligible to receive a degree, the most prudent course is to get the degree and grad transfer someplace for your last year of eligibility.  If you can get into a Stanford grad program maybe you stay around, if you want to do so. Many people will want to try somewhere else. I seriously doubt it will create a group of players that stay around 5 years to get an undergraduate degree. These days, with AP credits and teams staying around for summer quarter 3 years is becoming somewhat common. They will play 5 years alright, but only 4 (or less) at Stanford.

Banquet to celebrate 2024 season on February 8 at Hoover Institution.  Apparently anyone is invited.  Tickets start at $85.

Blount Hall has a seating capacity of 440. I might attend with my oldest son.

The Women’s Volleyball Banquet is our favorite Stanford event. If you’ve been following the team and are impressed with our team, I highly recommend you attend. You’ll become even more impressed with our incredible STUDENT athletes and become even more of a fan.

In the introduction to the regional final match ESPN did a segment of Ipar Kurt's journey from Turkey to Stanford.  She posted the segment on her Instagram page about five days ago.

Most of the comments are in Turkish (with an English translation by Instagram).  In the video segment Kurt's mother is quoted as saying America is "the land of endless opportunities for women".   There were a lot of Turkish fans who expressed their displeasure with that statement.  I guess they saw it as a criticism of their home country although I didn't interpret it that way.

From what I've seen in other articles Kurt will be back in Turkey this summer practicing within the National Team program.

Any chance the WBB team would let 6'5" MB Alex Eschmeyer play WVB next year?

Could a mod add here all the January posts Thanks

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 01-11-2025

There are rumors of Duke OPP Kerry Keefe transferring.  Her parents house in Pacific Palisades burned down.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - BostonCard - 01-11-2025

I moved the Jan posts to this thread.  Hopefully I did it right.

January 2025 posts from end of 2024 thread.  There are about a dozen of them.

Or change title of existing 2024 thread to 2024/2025.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - BostonCard - 01-11-2025

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - BobK - 01-13-2025

New rankings for 2026. Here are the Stanford possibles. We are thinking 4 of these 5
Hickman # 6 and college posted is Stanford
Andrews # 24 also college posted is Stanford
Roslon # 38 no college
Udoye # 52 no college
Nguyen # 56 no college

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - paloalto - 01-14-2025

Both Hickman and Andrews are really good; this would be great for the WVB program.

I see a number of articles indicating they are Stanford bound but I don't see them posting anywhere in social media about it.  Andrews has a private Instagram account but there is other social media.  Most prep players shout from the rooftop about being committed to Stanford as soon as they can.  Is there some reason these two are staying silent?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - BobK - 01-14-2025

Yes the reason is the House has not approved the roster being to 18. Or the roster increases for other sports
These are all scholarship athletes
Hard to publically commit if the scholarship increases hasn't been approved
The good news Stanford is on board with the proposed increase

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2025 - paloalto - 01-14-2025

Ok, I've read articles about students around the country in many sports who are complaining they will be cut if roster sizes are limited.  Some are scholarship athletes.  So hopefully this issue is thought thru a little more before it is enacted.
