LA times article UCLA: “ we’ve sold our soul to television” - GoodGrief - 01-27-2025

Good article about the UCLA coaches complaints about the rigors of traveling in the Big Ten.
OK, I don’t know why the software is shrinking my pasted quote to pico sized font, but I’m too busy to fix it right now
“We’ve seen the Eiffel Tower — or, we’ve seen the Statue of Liberty twice in the last three weeks while we were landing,” said Cronin, who could be forgiven for the slip-up given all the miles logged. “We also saw the Capitol building. And then we gotta go back [to Indianapolis] for the Big Ten tournament!”

ctrl + shift + v should give you a "paste as plain text" option in Chrome and a few other browsers.

Alternatively, change to "view source" (click on the last icon on the second row that looks like a page), which will show the formatting code. If you paste straight in, it will paste just the text.

Of course you previously knifed our conference and ten other teams in the back but, yeah shame about that soul-selling thing.

Who could possibly have seen the travel issue before you destroyed the only West Coast league? We’d feel real sorry for you about that flight to Indy if we weren’t on our way to Raleigh. Sucks, doesn’t it?

Absolutely correct, he and the UCLA admin sold their souls for a chance at the big money and now they are complaining.  Tough!

RE: LA times article UCLA: “ we’ve sold our soul to television” - oldalum - 01-28-2025

The article is about the detrimental effect of travel and the schedule on the team's ability to win games. Cry me a river. The word "student" appears 0 times in the article.

RE: LA times article UCLA: “ we’ve sold our soul to television” - Maple Leaf - 01-28-2025

The excessive travel issue(s) I would guess could become an element of a future collective bargaining agreement on part of the student-athletes.  Seeing both usc and ucla become also-rans in the Big 10 would not break my heart, though I do feel for the student-athletes who really want a meaningful education.

Quote:Stanford [football], in their second season of ACC play, will travel over 26,000 miles

I wish I could say that was ridiculous, but it's not. Assuming the 26k+ figure is accurate, the Stanford Cardinal football team will travel more than any NFL team traveled in 2024 except for the Chargers. Here are the top five teams based on total mileage traveled:

Los Angeles Chargers - 26,803
Miami Dolphins - 25,797
Seattle Seahawks - 25,797
New England Patriots - 25,071
San Francisco 49ers - 24,575

The 49ers will travel the fifth-most miles in the NFL in 2024

NFL teams have 8 or 9 road games and Stanford will only have 6....of course we took Hawaii (~5k miles RT) as a non-conference game when we could have picked someone closer, but we have a bye the next week.  We also three road games before school starts, although the BYU game is similar travel to the old Pac-12 games.  And we get SJSU and Cal at home this year where they were two of our road games last year which cut down on travel in 2024.

I assume some of the NFL teams had games in Europe, which if it is a west coast team is a lot of miles.

RE: LA times article UCLA: “ we’ve sold our soul to television” - BostonCard - 01-28-2025

We "sold our soul" to TV long ago.  Consider all the actions that have put increased pressure on students that were basically to "increase content".

1) Expanding from 11 to 12 regular season games.
2) Conference championships
3) Pac-12 after dark (imagine getting back to campus at 3 am on Sunday morning after a late game at the Palouse)
4) Games on weekdays
5) Playoffs
6) Playoff expansion
7) Previous conference realignments

I could go on.

Yeah, my first reaction was "What else is new?"
We've been doing it for decades.

RE: LA times article UCLA: “ we’ve sold our soul to television” - paloalto - 01-28-2025

I sure didn't like UCLA and USC putting a dagger into the PAC-12.   But from what I read UCLA's athletic program was in a tough spot financially.  They either had to sell their soul for money or make substantial cuts in sports programs.  While I didn't like it, I understand UCLA felt there was no other choice to keep all their sports teams funded.

One can ask the question was the decision made out of greed or survival.

Not that anyone at UCLA asks or cares but no pass given. Geesh, Stanford is now playing in THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE and asked to love it.

Even if they crawl back and (somehow reformed a new West Coast conference) they should start every football game with a 30 point deficit and we should seek to beat them 70-30.  All future UCLA games should be away for them after a red eye flight through Chicago and played at 10:00am.  In my dreams their games against USC would be played in a specially constructed Death Valley field, in mid July and also involve the same red-eye flight for both teams.

Maybe after 25 years we can consider accepting an apology, if they crawl the whole way to Palo Alto on their knees, also in mid-July. And maybe immediately after that USC game.

The argument that they were a helpless victim of economic trends and forced to knife their conference brethren because of evil USC is a weak fig leaf. And one that inadequately covers their guilt, no?  They happily picked up a long knife and followed Brutus to the Pac 12s body.  I give them no pass.

But otherwise I have no strong opinions on the matter!  :-)  :-)   :-)

IIRC folks in these parts predicted exactly this complaint.  Still waiting for their comments on playing outdoors in Wisconsin in November.
