MBB : vs. Wake Forest, Wednesday @ 8:00, ESPNU - skip75 - 02-05-2025

This is a rematch of a game played 3 weeks ago in Winston-Salem.  It's a bit of a bad break in the scheduling to draw the Demon Deacons for Stanford's 3rd home-and-home opponent (along with "geographical rivals" Cal & SMU).  Here is my preview from that previous game:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=25400

In that game, Stanford jumped out to an early lead 13-4.  By halftime Wake Forest had cut the deficit to 35-33.  It remained close for most of the 2nd half - Stanford trailed 64-63 with just over 5 minutes left.  But Wake Forest pulled away to secure an 80-67 victory.

Back on the home court, Stanford is a 2-point favorite.  Over/under is 139.5, so the implied score is 70.75-68.75.  Wake's record is 16-6, 8-3 in the ACC, & 3-4 on the road.  Stanford is 15-7, 7-4 in the ACC, & 12-1 at Maples.  Hopefully those oddsmakers know what they're talking about - and hopefully they know more than I do about Stanford's injury situation.  Without Jaylen Blakes back in the line-up, I've got to believe Wake should be favored.  And it would sure help to get Donavin Young back as well.

Updating some stats from the earlier preview....

Among the ACC's top 25 scorers, Stanford has #1 Maxime Raynaud (20.4ppg), #18 Blakes (14.6), & #19 Oziyah Sellers (14.5).  Wake has #5 Hunter Sallis (18.3) & #24 Cameron Hildreth (13.6).  Raynaud still leads in rebounds with 11.8rpg.  Wake has #5 Tre'Von Spillers (8.3) & #20 Efton Reid (6.0).  Blakes is #6 in assists (5.0), while Wake has #19 Hildreth (3.1) & #23 Ty-Laur Johnson (2.7).

Both teams remain heavily reliant on their frontline players with Raynaud, Sellers, & Blakes for the Card and Sallis, Hildreth, & Spillers for the Deacons all averaging more than 32 minutes per game.  In both the previous game with Stanford and in their most recent game vs Pitt (a 76-74 win), Wake used their 5 starters (Sallis, Hildreth, Spillers, Reid, & Johnson) for heavy minutes, supplemented only by Juke Harris & Parker Friedrichsen.  In that game at Wake, Stanford also got heavy use of their starters (Raynaud, Blakes, Sellers, Agarwal, & Young), with help from only Okpara, Cammann, & Gealer.

This game provides a chance to get back to even with the Deacons in the ACC standings and to regain the momentum Stanford had gained in slowly moving up the various rankings.  At full strength, Stanford should be very competitive.  Without Young, the task will be more difficult.  Without Blakes, my rose-colored glasses will quickly lose their tint.

What’s the status on Blake’s and Young tonight? With a full lineup I think we win tonight.

I see no recent news on the Blakes' injury, but the line apparently moved towards Stanford.  ESPN says Stanford is now a 3.5 point favorite.  If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Blakes playing tonight.

I thought I heard on Troy’s Treecast that Young (hip?) and Blakes (concussion protocol) were likely unavailable tonight? I was in a loud environment so I may have misheard…

Blake’s is out. Gealer is out with the flu. Young is a game time decision.  Yikes we’re gonna need 40 from Raynaud to win this one. Who even is our backup to the backup point guard.

In the past, Coach had said Agarwal is talented enough to handle the point, but that won’t really solve our predicament. It’s going to take a team/patchwork effort today.

Young is warning up. Blakes not dressed. No Benny on the floor.

Blakes in concussion protocol. Expected back on Saturday.

Down 8 pts with 4:18 to go in the 1H. WF's been on a 7-0 run over the last 2:38. Can't buy a bucket. Raynaud is 0-2 shooting, both 3pt attempts. Sellers is 0-4 shooting as well. Not great.

Down three at the half! Good effort to fight back. Winnable game.

Raynaud

Have the coaches never heard of flu shots? Not COVID. I get one every year.

RE: MBB : vs. Wake Forest, Wednesday @ 8:00, ESPNU - fullmetal - 02-05-2025

Tie game at 47-47 with 14:53 remaining!  Great teamwork and defense by Stanford even when the shots weren't falling.  Maxime will shoot a bonus FT after scoring off a WF turnover and the ensuing WF timeout.

Sellers and Young having a rough night offensively (1-10 shooting), but they're still rebounding and playing defense. Hope they shoot their way out of the slump. Raynaud is starting to catch fire.

76lsjumb - 76lsjumb - 02-05-2025

Okpara should be allowed to take any 3 he wants to, but should be told never ever ever take the ball inside the lane or try to shoot a layup (except maybe on a breakaway)

Okay, exception that proves the rule

RE: MBB : vs. Wake Forest, Wednesday @ 8:00, ESPNU - fullmetal - 02-05-2025

First lead of the game on a Sellers' three point shot!

Up three points, 61-58 on a Cammann layup with 7:28 to play, but WF will shoot two after Maxime commits his second foul. ESPN gives Stanford a 67% chance to win the game at this point in the game, but it really feels like an evenly-matched throwdown.

Everybody helping out and chipping in.  That's big in itself

First, I don’t think coaches can mandate a flu vaccine.  Second, “flu” gets used loosely; he may not have influenza.  Third, the influenza vaccine is only about 50 - 80% effective.  The most recent year, it seems to have been particularly ineffective, if the experience in the southern hemisphere can be extrapolated (https://www.flu.com/Articles/2024/2024-2025-Flu-Vaccine-Effectiveness).

But still, you should get vaccinated.  The benefits of preventing illness in yourself and those close to you who you might infect vastly outweigh the risks of vaccination.

My daughter got the flu this year after getting vaccinated. So did much of her class. Speculation on my part, based on small sample anecdotal evidence, but so think BC may be right about the flu vaccine missing the mark this year.

It's past 1 a.m. for these folks their time.  Would be good for that to start to show.....

RE: MBB : vs. Wake Forest, Wednesday @ 8:00, ESPNU - fullmetal - 02-05-2025

Both teams trading buckets, but Stanford's just given up a three and then a turnover (Batson Jr off his own leg).  Down two with 2:56 left in the game, WF ball and a timeout.

Might be balanced by Stanford being in the middle of winter quarter midterm season.

Okpara lays it in to tie the game at 69!  He's 6-8 shooting for the night off the bench, what a stud.

Batson Jr commits another foul...not super jazzed about his performance tonight?  But maybe that's just roster issues.

Maxime is called for a personal foul as he claims he got all ball.  Wake will shoot two.

WF gets a foul call as Okpara claims they were traveling. Refs starting to swing this game.

Way too many missed threes (6-23 as a team).  Stanford is down four with 51 sec to go.
