WBB: Stanford 75 Virginia Tech 74 OT -
81alum - 02-17-2025
Preview:
Fresh off a two-win weekend, we take a more hopeful team east to play the Virginia Schools. First stop is Virginia Tech on Thursday evening.
Virginia Tech is 16-9, 7-7 in conference. Massey has them at 38 (compared to our 40) so the computer thinks it is an even match-up. It gives us a 49% chance to win and predicts a 70-71 loss. Of their 9 losses, nearly all were to highly ranked teams--except the loss to Syracuse. Their best wins were over Louisville and over Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech has 5 players all averaging between 9 and 14 points--so an extremely well balanced offense with no particular person to focus upon more than the others. They have 4 very accomplished three point shooters, all with more than 25 made and shooting percentages ranging from 35% to 52%, so defending the perimeter will be essential. And none of the four are specialists, meaning that while they take and make threes, each of them gets about 2/3 of their baskets from inside. Thus the offense looks exceptionally diverse and will be difficult to scout and defend.
Only one starter does not shoot threes, and that is their 6'2" senior forward Rose Micheaux. She is hitting 56% of her shots, all from inside, and also anchors their rebounding with 8 rpg.
Carleigh Wenzel leads their scoring at 14ppg, and about 1/3 of her baskets are treys. While she is slightly more prolific than the other guards, they all seem to share that profile. She also leads the team with about 4 assists per game.
Like Stanford, Virginia Tech has a new head coach, Megan Duffy, who was named last April, almost the same time Kate Paye was named. Duffy was head coach for four years at Marquette with a 70% winning percentage, and you might remember her as a Notre Dame player back around the turn of the millennium
This is the only game left on the schedule that the Massey computer doesn't favor us in, although our final game at Maples against Georgia Tech is a close one too, with Georgia Tech being statistically a better team than Virginia Tech but playing in our place. If we can get a win at Virginia Tech it would do wonders for our reputation, particular with a road win against a winning team--something we have not yet accomplished this year.

The trip from Palo Alto to Blacksburg, VA must be one of our more difficult ACC trips - four plus hours on a plane and then a substantial bus ride, and this is in perfect weather. Add some East Coast snow and ice and the trip could take days. Then there is the three hour time difference and a major difference in climate and temperature. Talk about a home court advantage!

As always, thanks for this, 81. Fun fact for those who think Carleigh Wenzel might ring a bell: we were a finalist for her back during her recruiting days, and at least one crystal ball thought we'd land her.

She's not JuJu, Hildalgo, Miles, Rice or Blakes, but still a reminder that we've had a lot of recruiting finalists turn us down that could have sent this season in a very different direction if we had been in the Good Place timeline instead of the Bad Place one.

A reminder on "turning us down" It's not just grades it's AP classes a far more than 2. Unless we see the transcript we don't know.

Of course not taking the number of AP classes that Admissions wants to see is, in effect, a way of turning us down.

Yes, both points are good amendments. My sense is just that for a while from Ki through Betts we were landing many of our top targets year to year, and for whatever reason that trend has not been true since essentially the year we won the Natty (paradoxically), and of course coincided with a health outflow of players with remaining eligibility and no degree (Betts, Nivar, Emma-Nopu, Van Gytenbeek) plus of course ones with eligibility but who chose to graduate and move on (Irieh-FEN, Jones, Brink).

I recall a number of WVB parents telling me the assistant coach Corlett would tell them exactly how many AP/honors classes had to be taken each year to satisfy admissions. It was stressed taking the AP classes was even more important than the grade (A or B). Corlett would get into the weeds of each potential recruit's high school course offerings. If the high school did not offer AP classes, that was not held against the applicant. My guess someone on the WBB staff does the same thing as Corlett did.

Emma graduated from Stanford
Yes WVB WBB Softball coaches have all talked about the need for AP classes. The number 8 often mentioned
However we have have several recruits recently that have have 4-5 or more before their Jr HS year
All 36 sports at Stanford requires AP classes

I know that Betts has commented about how she committed to Stanford without being able to visit in-person because of Covid restrictions. Was that true of Nivar as well? I wonder if conversely Stanford lost out on recruits who might have thought differently if they had been able to make a campus visit. All we can do is speculate.

Yeah, it is amazing that we had such poor recruiting and retention after two final fours.
I don't know if that was because people thought Tara was retiring (which of course she did) or what.
Anyway, we now find ourselves a hole we have to dig out of.
Hopefully we can.

In my uninformed but strongly held opinion, we were way, way too slow to understand NIL and what a game changer that was. Tara was at least quietly hostile to it and in some cases openly critical of it. We hung on too long to the old paradigm; the value of a .stanford degree would allow us to ignore NIL. Glad to see we are awake now..but the test will be this year . We need to overpay those current players we want to stay and show our incoming class that they won’t have to leave a lot of money on the table if the come and stay here.
We can wish this reality wasn’t so, but it is. Tara was a great coach. Period. Kate Paye will be also. I don’t think we lost a single player because of that transition. It really was almost all about the Benjamins

Nunu did not travel with the team. Not a good sign.
We look a bit disjointed, missing a lot of shots we would normally make. We look like we have jet lag. Down 7-11 at the first break. Hopefully we get in rhythm soon.
11-16 after the first quarter. Defense is fine. Offense is not.
Clardy is 3-3 with 1 assist an 0 turnovers. She came to play.
Demetre is 2-6, and no one else has a point. We need more team offense.

The non-Clardy shooting has been painful to watch.
