WBB: Stanford 69 Virginia 89 -
81alum - 02-21-2025
Preview:
Virginia is a competent but not an elite team. They are 13-14 overall and 5-10 in league. Massey has them at 76, with their offense at 52 and their defense at 99. Massey gives us a 71% chance of winning and predicts a 74-66 score.
Virginia is led by Kymora Johnson, a 5'7" sophomore guard who was a McD All American in high school. She is the team's point guard with 147 assists to 97 turnovers, and the team's leading scorer. About 1 out of 4 shots is a three point attempt.

I watched a replay of the Cal @ Virginia game. Cal was down 5 at the half, reeled off 17 straight points, and then got reeled back, finishing Q3 up by 1. Virginia did have a lead in Q4, and was within 3 points in the last minute, but lost by 6. That game was another of the No Blood, No Foul games. There was a called flop on an obvious offensive foul, and later a technical foul on a Cal player for complaining. (Refs: Jules Gallien, Ashley Gloss, Ryan Durham)
I felt Virginia played better than Virginia Tech. Their roster has a ton of height (two 6'7", two 6'4") but only one played, Lattimore, 6'4" with very long arms. Still the team was tall. Virginia played 6 players primarily, with a seventh getting 5 minutes.
- Johnson 5'7" 40m Soph 24 points (6/6 FT, 2/4 3pt, 6/11 2pt, 7 rebounds, 5 assists). She had a triple-double (20/10/10) in the previous game against Pitt. Per the home-team announcers, the team was setting her up for that.
- Hurd 6'2" 36m (2/2 FT, 1/6 3pt, 2/5 2pt, 5 reb)
- McGhee 6'2" 31m (2/6 3pt, 1/3 2pt, 4 reb)
- Lattimore 6'4" 30m (0/4 3pt, 3/7 2pt, 6 reb) Same game as the triple double above, she had 30pts.
- Clark 5'8" 29m (4/5 FT, 0/1 3pt, 4/6 2pt, 4 reb, 5 assists)
- Noyan 6'3" 28m 11 pts (3/3 3pt, 1/2 2pt)
Cal's big player, Onyiah, only played 24 minutes due to foul trouble. Onyiah and Suarez (both 6'3", Grad & Sr) were the leaders in +/-.
Cal had fewer than normal turnovers (13 vs 18+), but they also had more 3PT than normal (13 vs 8+). Cal outrebounded Virginia (OR: 35.9% DR: 82.4%) Virginia had 7 blocks to Cal's 3.
Defensively, we have to control Lattimore and Johnson. I think rebounding will be important (as always, of course).
I fear that Virginia's tall line-up, with East Coast officiating may be too much. I'm hoping Umeh can have a good game. I'm hoping we can get our 3 point shots working.

Thank you MT! My internet went down part way through posting my preview and I did not know until hours later whether all, some, or none of what I had written got saved. The answer: some, but you filled in very well for the portion that didn't.
I agree with you that the Virginia team may be even more of a challenge than Virginia Tech. Tech was the better team on paper, but given that we won't have Agara the size mis-match against Virginia will be more substantial. Latasha Lattimore, at 6'4" and a senior, and the teams second leading scorer, will be difficult for us to defend. I think we have to hope that Demetre and Umeh can find a way to do it without fouling. We were told at the last chalk talk that Demetre has been concentrating on her defense--but collecting fouls as she did in the last game won't get it done against Lattimore.
Lattimore, by the way, is one of those perennial transfers, starting at Texas, going to Miami, and finishing at Virginia.

Anybody at the game in Charlottesville today? Hope our team gets a chance to see the campus and the Jefferson-designed neoclassical architecture. Probably no time to play tourist and see Monticello. My second favorite campus after you know where.

I was watching the Stanford vs Virginia Women's Lacrosse game yesterday on ACCN. It looked like half the WBB team was there cheering enthusiastically. If the Lacrosse team is still in town they may be in the stands today.

Stanford made an appearance in Charlie Creme's Friday bracketology update.
https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/30423107/ncaa-women-bracketology-2025-women-college-basketball-projections
They are listed 4th among the "next 4 out", so 8th in line behind the projected field. No margin for error with 3 games plus the ACC tournament remaining to be played.

Well, the start of the game at Virginia is violating the margin for error. Not good.
We are shooting 1-9 and they are 8-11. Barely halfway through the first quarter and a 16 point deficit.

19-3 half way through the first quarter?
This is awful.

1 fg in 6 minutes, and Virginia gets layups, no defense

What a terrible start. Virginia out hustling Stanford and getting wide open shots everywhere on the court including layups. This type of effort IS NOT OK. Waited too long to call a timeout. Now down 16. Why are we saving a timeout. Call the timeout sooner. Good grief.

As bad a start as we could have. Already trailing 19-3. We're making Virginia look like a top-10 team. We cannot keep up with the speed of some of their players as they are driving in the paint at will.

Last night against Cal, Kyle Smith called a TO after Cal got a 4-0 lead. He read the riot act to the team. Today Kate Paye waits until we’re down 19-3. Not encouraging…

Demetre looks like she did during her slump. Bad air-ball misses.

Time to try something different defensively. How about a little press or zone or anything for that matter to change the flow of the game. We look shellshocked and that should not happen at this point in a season. Coaches not having the team prepared and ready to play at the start of the game.

Wow, this was a painful first quarter to have to watch. Certainly not entertaining for any Stanford fan. Lattimore proved to be a nightmare matchup problem, as I feared. She is much too quick for Umeh and much too tall for our guards. And she canned 2 treys, which is not her normal modus operandi, and that completely flummoxed our defense.
But as bad as giving up 25 points int he first quarter was, our offense was horrid. Clardy looks completely different than in the VT game, Demetre finally hit a shot, but we will lose badly if we have more quarters of shooting 3/16.

Hard to believe anything could be more painful than the first quarter, but here we are...

We were out coached in this one. Virginia installed a new defense for us. They normally play zone, but they looked at the tape and decided they had to go man to keep our three point shooting from heating up. So the did. And it is working.
After a career night, Clardy does not have a point so far.
Bosgana does not have a point.
Demetre is 1/3.
We are getting to the point where I have to ask myself if I should watch the second half. Hopefully we show some sign that we can turn this around. Virginia is not Notre Dame.
Right after I said that, we go on a 7-0 run. ;)
Down 24-40 at the half. Both offense and defense were bad. Unfortunately, it looks like a typical letdown during the 2nd game on a road trip.
The two players we thought would hurt us, hurt us.
The players who have come to our rescue, so far have not.
Clardy did not catch fire against VT until deep into the second half, so perhaps we can hope for the coming of Superwoman II.

Well, we go into halftime down by 14.
So at least we have stopped the first quarter bleeding.
And 14 points is not an impossible margin to overcome.
So hope for the best in the second half.

Hope for the best? How about a power outage and a declared “no contest”…
