WBB: Stanford 86 Miami 69 - 81alum - 02-24-2025

Preview:

Our last home stand begins on Thursday.  It is obvious that we won't be hosting anything after the regular season, so this is truly the end of the line for our seniors playing at home.  Still, before we get to senior day on Sunday, we have Thursday's evening game against Miami.

Miami is 14-13 overall, 4-12 in conference, so they look similar to us, on paper.  Massey has them at 66, and before you conclude that makes them an easy win--66 is slightly better than Virginia and Clemson.  Miami just beat Wake Forest but they previously lost 5 in a row.  That win over Wake Forest was actually one of only two quality wins for them--the other being Florida.  Their offensive and defensive ratings are about equally mediocre.  Massey gives us an 81% chance to win and predicts a double digit 74-63.  They are 2-6 on the road and this trip will be a doozy for them.  The only time they have left the Eastern time zone this entire season was to play at a tournament in Hawaii.

Miami is led by 5'6" grad student guard Haley Cavendar.  She is playing in her 5th year after playing 3 at Fresno State.  She averages 18ppg, takes 3/4 of her shots from inside the arc but is also shooting 44 three pointers on the year at about a 31% clip.  She also has 124 assists to 80 turnovers.  While Miami has some other capable players, they are not a balanced offense, which means we should be scheming to stop Cavendar.  Haley, that is.

Miami's second leading scorer is a 6'3" grad student forward Cameron Williams.  She played 4 years at Michigan and just grad transferred to Miami for her 5th year of eligibility.  That makes two 5th year Covid players among their starters.  Williams is making 58% of her shots and 12 ppg, and leads the team in rebounding.  Another tough post matchup for or less athletic "bigs" to attempt to contain.

But Cameron Williams is NOT the only post.  Miami also starts 6'5" grad student center Natalija Marshall.  She played for Notre Dame for 4 years before grad transferring to Miami for her 5th year of eligibility.  That makes three 5th year Covid players among their starters.  She is making only 38% of her shots, so she is not the offensive threat inside that Williams is.  But (unlike Marshall) she also shoots the three, at 32%.  Defending a 6'5" three point shooter will be interesting.

Also a regular starter is Hannah Cavender, and (you guessed it) she is a 5'6" grad student guard--Haley's twin sister who also came over from Fresno State and is playing in her 5th year of eligibility.  That makes FOUR transfers playing in year 5 of their eligibility.  These twins have very similar shooting percentages and assist to turnover ratios, but Hannah just takes many fewer shots than Haley.

The twins have a big social media presence.  Last year they committed to TCU before they were lured back to Miami.  I do not know the price tag for that.  They seem to have a lot of money for clothes:

Media reports indicate that they each rake in almost one million annually in NIL deals.

And there you have it.  Miami is one of the bottom feeding teams in the conference that we are competing with to make it into the ACC.  I am not sure why they have had such a bad year, when the previous year they made the elite 8.  But I would love to kick them while they are.....jet lagged.

While I can hope for an invite to the NCAA tournament (which would mean we wouldn't host any postseason games), there are alternatives:

The WBIT sounds like it would be worth it.  It would provide added practice and game experience for our young players and better prepare them for the 2026 NC run.

Who is the 5th starter? The twins, Marshall, and Williams are mentioned. Is there a wing in the lineup? If they only start 4, it may be a contributing factor to their poor record. 8^)

Hah!  Someone paying attention!  I don't always review every starter.  In this case, the fifth player is usually Jasmyne Roberts, scoring 10 ppg and making about 40% of her shots, mostly (but certainly not exclusively) from inside the arc.  She is a 5'10" senior guard who has played all 4 years at Miami.  Their sole non-mercenary.

Nunu still out.

We are mathematically in the ACC tourney.  Playing for a 10 seed max.

I can't get the game on ACCNX.  Does anyone have a live feed link?

same for me!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - martyup - 02-27-2025

I have FUBO and ESPN+, but it still says "This channel is not part of your TV package."  I can usually watch the ACCNX games.

Logout and log back in/activate usually works. I had to activate - pick the game - and then activate again. ESPN validations suck.

Edit: note I also use Fubo

I logged into the ESPN app and from there it had me log into a network. I used Sling which worked, even though I couldn't log in from Sling directly.

ESPN box showing a score that never existed.  21-20 Miami ahead. Facepalm.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - jonnyss - 02-27-2025

i can't get it with my tv apps. neither the usual youtube tv nor the espn work.

but on my laptop, going to gostanford.com and clicking the watch link, it asks me my tv provider. i enter youtubetv, and the game comes on after several minutes of preview.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - Hieronymus - 02-27-2025

22-21 Stanford after 1 quarter. Guard defense is terrible again so far. The Cavinders with 17 of Miami’s 21. Hanna with double her season avaerage already.

Thank you.  That worked!

Miami shooting threes from downtown and making them.  Stanford shooting pretty well also. Combined score 170 tonight?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - martyup - 02-27-2025

For some reason ACCNX uses the same "on break" music that the Pac-12 network used, minus the crashing waves.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - BobK - 02-27-2025

No problem watching for me.
However would be more fun if Stanford played some defense and stopped dribbling off their legs /feet

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Miami Thursday 7pm; preview and game thread - Hieronymus - 02-27-2025

Bosgana having a really bad game. Can’t keep up on offense or defense.

Shay is going to get tossed one of these days for a play like that

ACCNX is essentially branded ESPN so it probably isn’t too surprising

Halftime: Stanford 45-44.

Crazy halftime stats
9 total fouls. Will see if we get 20+ second half fouls like last time.
Combined 14-25 from three. 56%.
Not much defense either way today.

I, too, have fubo and ESPN plus. I agree with the comment above that ESPN login validation really stinks. Reminder: ESPN is owned by Disney, so perhaps the bad user interface and bad login with validation is not surprising.
