MBB: vs. SMU, Saturday at 2pm, ACC Network -
skip75 - 02-28-2025
Stanford favored by 1, O/U is 150.5, implied score is 75.75-74.74. OTOH, ESPN Analytics gives SMU a 60.9% chance to win. The Mustangs are 21-7, 12-5 in the ACC, and an impressive 7-2 on the road.
My preview for Stanford's game at SMU on Feb. 1 can be found here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=25442
In that game, Stanford, playing without Jaylen Blakes and Donavin Young, lost big, 85-61. This time, it might be SMU that plays shorthanded. Boopie Miller has missed their last 4 games with some sort of foot injury. I am not sure what his status is for Saturday.
In Miller's absence, SMU's starting line-up Wednesday at Cal was Chuck Harris, BJ Edwards, Samet Yigitoglu, Kario Oquendo, & Matt Cross. Edwards, Oquendo, & Cross played 39, 33, & 32 minutes, respectively. Yigitoglu played 26 minutes before fouling out, and Harris played 28 minutes, limited somewhat by 4 fouls. Jerrell Colbert also fouled out while playing just 8 minutes. Based on those numbers, it appears that, especially if Miller is still out, SMU may rely heavily on the starting 5. SMU led Cal 42-29 at the half. But, partly due to the Mustangs foul problems, Cal was able to chip away at the lead to tie it 66-66 with about 5 minutes left. SMU then went on a 9-0 run and won 81-77.
SMU plays up tempo and efficiently on offense and hits the boards hard at both ends. They are 2nd in the ACC in scoring offense (82.14 ppg), 3rd in scoring margin (+10.25), 2nd in FG% (48.3), 3rd in FG% defense (40.5), 3rd in 3pt FG% (38.4), 1st in rebounds (39.7 rpg), 2nd in rebounding margin (+6.5), 2nd in assists (16.3), and 2nd in steals (7.8). Despite the high-scoring offense, the Mustangs have no one in the top 20 scorers in the ACC. But they have 6 players (Miller + all the starters in the Cal game) averaging in double figures. Cross is 5th in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and Yigitoglu is 13th (6.5). Miller is 4th in assists (5.7/game), and Edwards is 10th (3.8). Edwards is 2nd in steals (2.3/game) and Miller is 7th (1.6). And Harris is 6th in 3pt FGs with 64.
SMU is in 4th place in the ACC, currently in position for a double-bye in the ACC tournament. With Wake Forest & UNC just a game behind, they will be trying to hold onto that spot, and also trying to improve their position as one of the "next 4 out" in ESPN latest NCAA tourney bracketology. Stanford is in 7th place, in position for a single bye in the ACC tourney. They trail Wake & UNC by a game, and have a 2-game edge on Georgia Tech. With road games at Notre Dame & Louisville next week, getting a win in the final home game would be a big boost in hanging onto that bye, edging closer to 20 wins, and (short of a miraculous run to the NCAA tourney), closing in on a spot in the NIT.
And, of course it will be Senior Day for Jaylen Blakes, Cole Kastner, & Maxime Raynaud. Hopefully they can finish up at Maples with some happy memories and a win.

Given the stakes for both teams and Stanford’s previous ugly loss to the Ponies, I proclaim this the most meaningful game of the season.

Boopie Miller out of action again (or at least not in the starting line-up).

Stanford up by five with 6:29 left in the first half. Honestly, it's just fun to see two good teams play with a lot of intensity (and one of them is Stanford)!
Stanford up by six at the half. I think it's been an impressive offensive output but I'm most excited about the defensive effort by Stanford, which has greatly contributed to the 9 turnovers for the Ponies. Also, SMU's big man Yigitoglu only has two points; last time, he was SMU's leading scorer with 17.
That said, Stanford shot 60%(!), and it's only a two-possession game. Still, proud as a fan to see the team start out playing its best in such a meaningful game.

Cammann has four assists! Also four points and the usual defensive/rebounding effort. Best game I've seen him play in his young career. Stanford leads, 52-44 with 15:27 left in the second half.
Stanford has committed six turnovers already this half (under 12 minute media time out). Also, SMU shooting free throws the rest of the way. Stanford still leads by four, however.

Stanford up five after a monstrous putback slam by Raynaud! 8+ seconds left, though.
EDIT: All Right Now! Stanford wins and absolute banger of a game. So proud as a fan, it must be a lot of fun to be in Maples today!

How AWESOME was that slam to seal the victory and on senior night! What a great win. SMU is very good and this is a game we almost tried to give away. Great job to Benny Gealer. Let’s get to 20 wins!

Agree on the AWESOME, but disagree on the give away. More like kept it from being stolen. We got to shoot exactly ZERO free throws over the last 38 and a half minutes, while SMU shot 22.

I just looked at the stats. SMU was 16 for 22 in free throws. Stanford was 2 for 2.
I can't ever remember seeing that stat so lopsided. Dang and WTF!

Stanford-Alabama. March 2004. 11 vs 44 FT attempts. It still hurts!

Awhile back I didn't think we were going to win this one. OTOH it makes up for GT, which I thought we would. Home vs road factor is big it seems. It does still come down to beating Notre Dame on the road. Kenpom we are 86, they are 93. SMU was 49, so that makes today's win even bigger. Louisville is 23, so that may be a bridge too far. FWIW, GT is 97. A game that, on paper, we should have won.

Here’s the
clip if you want to see it - notice that Raynaud was the furthest away from the basket when the shot was put up.

You had to bring that one up. One of the most poorly officiated games ever in an NCAA tourney game.

A noble win -- this one gets us an NIT bid.

Absolutely agree with you regarding the Louisville game, but if this team can go on the road and play with the same heart they played this game, almost anything is possible. I figured we absolutely had to have a healthy Blakes for this game. But who knew that Benny's shot which was lost somewhere in basketball land would suddenly reappear. Cammann had a great game helping out Raynaud down low and I really hope Okpara can spend the offseason with Smith and they staff getting over his desire to keep driving to the basket when there is way to get to the hoop. His handle is just too weak, but he is startinig to turn into another version of Barbecue Benny from long range. I am not sure any Haase team ever played with the heart this team has shown.
I will absolutely miss Raynaud I am glad he decided to stay and he made it very clear in the press conference that he was happy he did.

I thought maybe there was a new rule that said the traveling team got to bring its own officials to call the game.
