IMO this is a horrible "look" for Stanford. Would TT have been fired if the stories about his misconduct had not become public? Events give the perception that Stanford's behavior is not guided by doing the "right thing" even when nobody is looking. It will be interesting to know if TT is getting paid his buyout or was "fired for cause" and will not. I am guessing the former. Stanford doesn't want to face a lawsuit, even if it one they would "win".

I still believe that the misconduct stories would not have leaked if there wasn't at least some serious consideration from admin to get rid of Taylor in the first place.

Agreed, it was pretty dumb not to fire him at the end of the season knowing what we now know about his internal management and what we all saw with his external performance. But putting that aside, what must be done inevitably should be done immediately. Every day that went by was a further metastasizing of the situation. Stop the bleeding and turn the page.

Honestly, it's not ideal, but it's still the better outcome than if he had remained, so I'll take it.

Not sure I agree. It indeed could be that there was "serious consideration" given but when it became clear TT was not going to be fired somebody who disagreed leaked the information. However, IMO it is at least equally probable that the information was leaked because no consideration was given to firing TT and that was unacceptable to the person who leaked the information. It is also possible (as others have conjectured) that there is a lawsuit against TT and Stanford in the works and the information was leaked to help that effort by making Stanford want to settle.
In any case, Stanford (probably Muir at the time) at a minimum made a big publicity error. They should have either fired TT right away or at a minimum put in place a plan to deal with the information becoming public. Relying on that never happening was clearly very stupid. It was bound to leak eventually. This is a "pragmatic" analysis. The question of "the right thing to do" can be separately debated.

Agreed. The important thing here is for Stanford football to have a direction and strong leadership. Luck making this call gives that. Very quickly, nobody will care about the progressive discipline issues or about the meeting with the team where Luck stood behind Taylor staying. I think there is a good chance that the meeting with the team caused enough players to complain or give indications that they are going to look elsewhere that Luck felt he had to make a move. For football coaches with such high salaries, it is better to make the move when the situation on the ground calls for it. Never wait. I hope they can find a good coach to get us back on a competitive track.
Cheers,
Pete F.

I agree it is a better outcome than having him remain. I am in fact not sure having him remain was really an option. There are clearly too many people who believe his behavior was disqualifying. The building PR disaster precluded keeping him IMO. Stanford might have done the "right thing for the wrong reasons". Indeed that is better than doing the "wrong thing".

Stanford did not cover itself in glory on this at all, and I'm not surprised if they end up paying him what they owe including an extension (!) despite having two chances to fire for cause they didn't take.
I suppose Stanford can be trusted to do the right thing once all other possibilities have been exhausted.

It took a few days to draft the statement. He’s a busy guy right now.
Don’t Levin and Martinez need to hire an AD first? Also, what big-name established coach take a job where Andrew Luck is his boss? If AL becomes interim, what happens to the GM position?

Can you imagine losing a multi-million dollar a year job because of the a$$hole way you treated staff? Boy, he really needs some deep self reflection . . . and a lot of therapy.
Good riddance because he won 6 games in two seasons. You really can't do much worse than that. We need better.

i was distressed to read on the other board last thursday that luck & taylor had addressed the team. luck had to have been informed of the investigations before he took the gm job last november, right? he should have had a contingency plan for the eventuality that this potential fiasco would become a genuine fiasco if it leaked and that it probably would leak at some point.
what bothers me the most is the hubris stanford's leadership--muir, levin, luck--displayed in thinking this could be swept under the rug and kept there.
i say this knowing full well that this could be a situation which was vastly overblown in some fashion and/or a product of the times--snowflake generation, personality clash, thin-skinned even in the face of an alleged "equal opportunity ********."

There is also an allegation in one of the reports of NCAA violations which did not help his case.
How long before he sues the University for wrongful termination?

If he is getting paid over the remainder of his contract he probably has no grounds for a suit. AFAIK we don't have any reason to believe he was terminated for cause.
