Luck knows him from his days coaching Indianapolis where he was 40-33-1 and went to the playoffs twice in five seasons, once with Luck as his QB. It'll be interesting to see if the NFL discipline translates at Stanford. Reich was an NFL quarterback and a longtime OC/offensive assistant, and was Philly's OC during their 2017 Super Bowl winning season. He helped Carson Wentz go 11-2 and transformed Nick Foles into the Super Bowl MVP. He also worked extensively with Philip Rivers.

Good story on Reich. Coach Levy, fellow QB Jim Kelly, GM Bill Polian, teammate Boomer Esiason all speak extremely highly of him: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29732526/down-never-why-colts-frank-reich-king-comebacks

BTW, Reich was the quarterback who led the comeback wild card playoff win for the Bills after being down 35-3. He also led UMaryland from a 31-0 halftime deficit to beat UMiami 42-40, at the time the largest deficit in NCAA D1 history. He served as Jim Kelly's backup for years. And he's a man of faith, which probably fits the program's needs after Taylor's scandal: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/37713125/inside-frank-reich-unique-journey-nfl-qb-seminary-president-panthers-coach

For one season, in the straits that Stanford football is in, I really like this hire.  Stanford needs a new football culture, and I think Reich can deliver. If he works out, he stays. I realize that he may have the NFL as a goal, but at age 63 coming off of a 1-10 record in his last stint, I don't see it. That was the fourth shortest HC stint in NFL history and he's the first HC since the NFL/AFL merger to be fired in back-to-back seasons. I realize recruiting is a question, but it's a big part of the job, and Reich strikes me as the kind of guy who doesn't neglect the important aspects of his roles. Worst case, he hires an excellent recruiting staff.

Tight ends coach Nate Byham has been promoted to offensive coordinator.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - 82lsju - 03-31-2025

it will be interesting to see how having a one-year coach impacts recruiting given previous hand wringing about recruits wanting to know who their coach was going to be for their entire time in school (even though many coaches were either fired or quit while they would be there) and if Andrew Luck is now going to be the primary recruiter to show some continuity to potential recruits as well as current players.  And I would hope that they really start the search before the end of the 2025 season...

Quote:Reich is joining the Cardinal on a one-year deal with Stanford expected to launch a national search following the 2025 season.

the press release on the hire is here

the last line says

Quote:The hiring is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - PVTree - 03-31-2025

I think the fact that it is a1-year interim contact will hurt recruiting a lot. It is very important for players to know who will be coaching them and the style of offense/defense they will be utilizing.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - gailtate - 03-31-2025

Reich is respected and squeaky-clean for sure. The biggest question is his ability to attract a network of hotshot, "rainmaker" recruiters.

With the portal, is that even true?  Based on the number of times I have heard “so-and-so, formerly Texas Tech recruit by way of North Carolina…” I would guess that fewer than half of players spend all four years at a school.

+1. I think it's one of those things that used to really matter, and now really doesn't. "Successful former NFL head coach" is  compelling enough, I suspect.

To me, the more difficult piece is his assistant coaches. They actually have to think about next year's role.

If this works out, Luck will have earned legend status early on.  I wonder if this means April is moving on?  It decisions seems to say either April had no interest or Luck had no interest.  As someone else said, I don't see this helps us at all with recruiting or retention.  Sort of makes Andrew the lead recruiter in a big way. It may well be a positive in terms of Brown and Bachmier.  Chance to learn from a guy who played QB for 14 years in the NFL and developed some really good QBs.
Tune next Fall.

Great post. Great hire. . . .

As for the "interim" status, that's what the school announced they would do. That label can vanish. As someone mentioned elsewhere, it could be a mutual interim deal. Reich gets to kick the tires, Luck and Levin have a chance to find the money. Regarding assistants, Reich will either mold what he has now for continuities sake, but my guess is if that doesn't look good, changes will come. . . .

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - TonyLima - 03-31-2025

This is quite a place. I just finished reading the announcement email, so naturally I stepped over here. And already you folks have completely dissected and analyzed the hIRE. I think I’ll stick around a while longer.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - BostonCard - 03-31-2025

I won’t know how I feel about this hire until I read Matt Squeri’s missive dissecting it in five dimensions (seriously, though, I’m looking forward to his analysis).

Same. This is not my lane. But one thing Nneka said when she made her guest appearance at Tara's class really stuck with me: unlike her college experience, in the pros you never know how long your coach will be your coach, so it's a very different kind of relationship (and note that six of twelve head coaches were fired in the W at the end of last season).

In that sense, perhaps part of Luck's pitch is this: to be pro ready means not expecting you'll always have the same coaching staff, so what you get coming to Stanford is a very experience pro coach, a very experience pro GM, and a world class education. And whoever the head coach is next season, he'll be at least as good as Reich (either he succeeds and is retained, or we find a better replacement by this time next year).

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - SkiBum80 - 03-31-2025

I think this was a good move by AL and for our football team.
Because it has to be evaluated in the context not of some perfect world, but in the context of what are the real life alternatives at this point in time.
It seems like the main alternatives at this point in time were to promote from within (as permanent or interim), or to delay for a further coaching search.
Any further delay would most likely, and eventually, be seen by a lot of folks as equivalent to dithering, which would have brought lots of roster depletion consequences.
We will no doubt still have some players leaving, which we likely would have had even without TT being fired.
But I hope this quick hire of someone with this level of experience has the potential to reduce the outflow, and possibly even bring in some that otherwise wouldn't have come.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - French Rage - 03-31-2025

I think the main motivation behind the interim title is they want to make it clear from the start that Reich will not last a thousand years.

I'll see myself out.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - Maple Leaf - 03-31-2025

From the Athletic:

The news of Luck’s surprise hiring caught the attention of those across the country, including back in Indianapolis. On Monday, Colts general manager Chris Ballard applauded the short-term move by Luck.

“I love Andrew. I think he’s brilliant, smart. I think he’s great for the game of football, and I think he’s great for Stanford. And I feel the same way about Frank Reich,” Ballard said. “Good for Andrew, man. For one, recognizing somebody that could help Stanford’s program, that was out there. I think it gives (Reich) instant credibility walking in the building. However, they’re gonna navigate this time, I think there’s no two better people that can navigate it. And then hiring Frank, who’s been through some pretty unique situations to navigate, if anybody can do it, Frank Reich can do it.”

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - fullmetal - 03-31-2025

French Rage, you hit another home run with that one lol.

I can totally see Reich staying on if the program benefits from his one-year tenure.  As cardcrimson says, that label can vanish.  TT was staying until he didn't.  Even if Reich moves on to the NFL, which could be his endgame, recruits should know that if they impress him, then there's at least one guy in the NFL who they've impressed, and that could go a ways toward scouting interest and draft interest.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - BobK - 03-31-2025

Reich is 63. I don’t see him staying but I really love his hire.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - French Rage - 03-31-2025

In all seriousness, I like the hire.  If I were to describe a coach I wanted, I would say someone with both NFL and college experience, at different levels (position coach, coordinator, head coach), and for a bunch of different teams or programs; that way you know they've seen a lot of football from all angles and have the right knowledge base upon which to make informed decisions.  I'm not going to pretend that 100% guarantees success, but it's a pretty good foundation.  Reich gives us most of those, and darn near all of them, and considering we're doing this in late March when the pool has significantly dried up, it's about as close as you're going to get for now.  We'll have to see what the results are, given that NIL and transfers are still uphill battles for us, but I don't know if I could think of a much better choice that would actually say yes.
