Once again, following Stanford’s lead… - Giants - 06-16-2025

Cal has announced that AD Jim Knowlton will “retire”.

First, Stanford hires Luck to run the football program.  Then Cal hires Rivera to run their football program.  Now, after watching Stanford push Muir out the door, Cal has decided to do the same to Knowlton.  Although they were long overdue, these actions were the right move.

Perhaps, one day, Cal will blaze their own path instead of tagging along two steps behind their neighbor.

As for what’s next….

With their next AD hire, both schools will tell us much about the long-term direction of their respective athletic programs.

Kudos to Cal. When they do an independent investigation, they really mean it. 1,092 page opinion, spent $2 mms., hired Munger Tolles Olson one of the truly great litigation firms. One-third of their lawyers are Stanford, Harvard or Yale alums, 50% from N'Western, UCLA, VA, MI, Chicago, UCB. And the result was a thorough, 1092-page opinion, which was public:

Munger Tolles Investigation Report on Teri McKeever

When Stanford did their investigation, they hired what was essentially a non-independent firm, the Chair of which served Stanford in an official capacity, and a firm that had billed Stanford (IIRC) over $6 million the year prior, if memory serves. But whatever.
