It is pretty obvious they put an emphasis on “rivalries” that featured consistently highly rated teams.
Penn State/Ohio State in the Top Ten? They have only played each continuously since 1993. Prior to that they had met only eight times in history.

Or #18 Michigan v. Notre Dame. That probably
should have been a great rivalry, but they've only played 44 times. They first met in 1887, played ten times until 1909, then they didn't play again until 1978, save for two games during WWII. And they stopped in 2019. Shouldn't great rivalries (a) play every year and (b) not stop?
Or #19, Alabama vs. Clemson. 19 total meetings, Alabama is 14-5. Doesn't seem like a rivalry.
I get #20, Stanford of the East vs. Yale. 140 meetings. Also get #41, Lafayette vs. Lehigh, most games played at 160. But Princeton has played Yale 146 times and their rivalry predated Hahvahd vs. Yale by two years. Doesn't Yale vs. Princeton belong in the Top 100, especially since Princeton won 22 of the first 40 national championships? Or for that matter, Princeton vs. Rutgers. First college football
ever in 1869. Played 71 times.

Hey, my son-in-law, an Eli would suggest his Alma Mater v. that school in Cambridge should #1.

It also hasn't been much of a rivalry: Ohio State is 12-1 against PSU since Andrew Luck turned pro.
